Gennady Golovkin VS Matthew Macklin 6-29-13

Golovkin's biggest test so far. HBO loves this dude.

I really know nothing about this guy, and I don't think I've even seen him fight yet. I just know the HBO hype train is all-in on him, which makes me a bit wary. Will be interested to get a first look at him this weekend, anyway.

Despite being untested Golovkin is a huge favorite to knock Macklin out.

Obviously very heavy handed he had a distinguished amateur career winning a World Championship and Silver Medal in the 2004 games. When you have a 345-5 amateur record you have to have something going for you.

GGG just flattened him with a body shot. He's a beast.

He is a beast and worthy of Jim and Max's cheerleading.

Wow. That was as-advertised. Consider me impressed.

Golovkin's power is almost mystical, because he doesn't look like that big of a guy, and he doesn't really load-up or sit-down on his power shots, so the fact that he's just throwing calm, normal punches, and guys go flying across the ring is almost confusing. Nevertheless, who would want to fight this guy at this point?

You gotta figure Sergio Martinez is next, and given how badly he's deteriorated in the last 12 months or so, I envision no other outcome than him being knocked out. I mean, Macklin is a real tough hombre, and gave S-Mart all he could handle, and just collapsed like a broken folding chair against this Golovkin guy without him even breaking a sweat. I don't want to over-react to what I saw tonight, but given the middleweight contenders, it's hard to see anyone beating him for a long time...

I think one guy that's got a shot, if he could ever commit to the sport and respect himself enough, is Chavez Jr., but I seem to be the only one that sees something in the kid (which admittedly might not be there).

I've liked GGG for a while but I still wasn't sure how he'd go against Macklin who is tough, legit middleweight but damn GGG has some scary power. If Martinez actually wants some of GGG, which he'll probably have to now, I think GGG will win. I mean you look at the degree of success Macklin and to a lesser degree Barker were able to have, you have to figure that GGG could make it a rough night.

Martinez is one of my all time favorite fighters, but I think you're right. The only way Sergio has a shot is if he is 100 percent healthy. That has not been the case recently. I still give Sergio a fan boy's chance. Either way I'd love to see that fight and just think if Sergio find's a way to win. His legacy would be cemented.

Forgot to mention the obvious about tonight...that was a wicked body shot omg lol. He dropped like a bag of bricks I found myself laughing at the replay, even though the **** is obviously not funny.

He's got a good chin, he's a good body puncher, and a decent overall puncher, but wouldn't have time to wear down Golovkin to the body. Lampley hosted his boxing show after the fight and his interview with Andre Ward seemed to hint at Chavez being in the fighter's very near future.

EDIT: Scroll down a sliver and you will see the body shot.

BIG TIME power! Golovkin's punches hurt even when they miss!

It will be interesting to see how that power converts to 168. Even though he says he wants all 154-168 comers, I don't think his management team is in a hurry to venture beyond 160, and what junior middleweight would want to fight him?

That being said some big money is there at 168, even a power dream match with new light heavyweight Adonis Stevenson. (at 168, not 175)

I hear S-Mart is off the table for Golovkin for the forseeable future (maybe forever), which is probably wise...I think Sergio would just get busted up and have his career ended unceremoniously if they fought at this point.

I also heard the suggestion of Chavez Jr., but it's not clear when/if he's going to be ready to fight again. That would be my preferred match-up.

The Stevenson match-up would be TNT vs dynamite...big action fight with big power potential. The weight might be an issue there, though.

The weight would have to be at 168, but that's a fight that would be only remotely possible well down the road.

I actually felt bad for Macklin after that KO...I mean, that must just hurt so bad to leave a tough SOB like Macklin writhing on the mat in pain in front of the whole world...That had to be a cracked rib or lacerated liver or something. Either way, I don't ever want to know how badly that hurts...
