Wow..what a shock..114-113 for Ward by all the judges.

I was expecting Kovalez to get something like 116-112, giving Andre the benefit of the doubt.

Having said that Andre showed heart to come back.

Good fight, after the 3rd I felt like Ward kept it close. I gave Kovalev the 10th.

        Re: Kovalez-Ward 3 Days Away (11-19-16)

Lederman had it 116-112 Kovalez, and Roy Jones said he was surprised that Kovalez didn't get it because he thought the knockdown was the difference. That comment surprised me because throughout the fight he was mostly cheerleading for Ward, particularly when overstating Ward's body attack and it's effect on Sergio's stamina.

When Sergio said he might have lost three rounds Kellerman said there could be an argument for that because of the closeness of the rounds. To get to 114-113 Ward you'd have to give Andre all of the close ones and a bonus round.

HBO showed the isolation of Andre's face after the decision and Lampley jumped on it by asking the viewers if that was a look of surprise..

(would have seen it if one close by was showing it.) ward has a slight edge due to pure boxing ability but it will come down to how good ward's chin is.
looks like i was right.....came down to ward's chin after all.

Having given my opinion of who won the fight, my opinion of Andre Ward has only gone up. That's one tough, determined dude who can take a punch.

jaybee, did he hurt or have kovalev in trouble at all during the fight?

No. He landed quality shots though, some big ones to be sure.

thanks, buddy....can't wait for rematch. should be even better since they both know what they are bringing to the table now.

Never. Kovalez landed a bomb of a jab which rattled and shocked Ward in the first. It looked like it exploded on his face. I'd be interested to see if any judge gave Ward the first round.

EDIT: Lederman had it 116-111 Kovalez (not 116-112). ESPN had it 115-112 Kovalez.

In my opinion, it was a great world class fight with adjustments and momentum swings. Judging aside, a boxing fan would enjoy it. To me kovalev won but his inability to be dominant especially in the later rounds lost him the fight. He won big early, so the drop off made it easier to score for ward. IMO kovalev won by at least 2 points. Rematch needs to happen, and it will be a pleasure to watch (again) -world class skill on both sides on display

Two judges gave Andre the LAST SIX ROUNDS and the other one gave him 7 of the last 8 rounds. Absolutely ridiculous.

boy, that was some knockdown.....kudos to ward for coming back from that one. maybe kovalev relaxed just a bit in the later rounds figuring the knockdown and power punches gave him a big enough lead. p.s. on a side note, wonder if stallone and jordan were there. seems like the fighters from the creed movie have fared well recently. bellew with his cruiserweight title and ward now beating kovalev.

Interesting comments by Kellerman who at that point did not know that two judges gave Andre the last six rounds and the other one gave him 7 of the last 8 rounds.

" I think that Ward was awarded every round that he could have been awarded by the judges".

Very diplomatically he called the decision controversial, but not "bad".

Ward was definitely landing a lot of good clean body shots. Definitely slowed Kovalev down. At least took some steam off of his punches. Hell of a fight. Either way that the decision went it was going to warrant a rematch. Way too close of a fight not to.

Kellerman nailed his final point on the fight.
