Prizefighters - 2D Arcade Boxing Game for Android/iOS

    UPDATE:

Prizefighters is now available on Android and iOS!

    App Store: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/priz...8912?ls=1&mt=8
    Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d....prizefighters

    Hey OS!

I'm a small developer that's created a couple of basketball games, but for my next title I wanted to create a boxing game inspired by the classic NES title Punch-Out!. It's called Prizefighters and I've been working on it since the beginning of the year and wanted to share some of the gameplay and features.

The controls have been designed so that there are no onscreen buttons. Depending on where you tap or hold on the screen, you can throw up to 8 different punches of varying strengths. Mix a few punches together and create your own combos for increasing damage.

    Spoiler

Block your face or body from incoming punches by holding down two fingers.

    Spoiler

Dodge by swiping left or right. If you time your dodge successfully, your opponent will become momentarily 'stunned' giving you the opportunity to land a knockout punch! Fail to dodge, however, and that can mean bad news for you.

    Spoiler

Punch too often and your player will become fatigued and unable to attack. Stamina management will be key throughout the fight.

    Spoiler

If three rounds pass without a knockout, the fight will go to the scorecards where the result will either be a draw, split, or unanimous decision decided by three judges.

    Spoiler

There will also be a career mode where you begin at rank #30 and fight your way up against 29 other randomly generated opponents. Along the way are three different champions and by earning all the titles you'll become the undisputed champion.

    Spoiler

After fights, you'll gain experience and coins which you can then spend on customization options, rating upgrades, or choose between one of two unique abilities in the skill tree every time you level up.

    Spoiler

Other modes include an Arcade mode with modifiable game settings and an online head-to-head mode that will be coming in a later update. Prizefighters will be free to play with a planned release date of December 14th and an open beta coming in the next week or so. If you're interested in testing, PM me your email address as well as preferred device and invitations will be sent out when available.

Please let me know your thoughts on the game so far! I'll be sure to keep any feedback in mind as I continue developing the game.

        Hey SHAKYR,

My twitter for the game is @KoalityGame. Thanks a lot for sharing! As a small dev, it's hard to be noticed so anything to spread the word is a really big help. Your support is much appreciated!

This reminds me so much of Mike Tyson's Punch-Out. Can't wait to try it! Thanks for keeping the boxing video game flame lit, man.

Of course! I was a huge fan of boxing video games growing up so I've been let down by what's available out there on the market. I'm doing what I can as an indie dev to give boxing fans at least a small and fun arcade game with RPG elements that they can play on the go

Glad you're enjoying it! That's partially correct, you can actually just tap anywhere on the screen. How fast you have to tap depends on how much endurance you have remaining (the grey bar behind your health).

I'm only fooling around in arcade mode (medium difficulty), but the scoring is a little off. Determining a 10-9 winner of a round is pretty much on point with close rounds sometimes getting differing opinions from the three judges. But I've seen rounds where I've knocked the guy down and clearly won the entire round and I just get a 10-9. In the three instances where I've had two knockdowns in a round I've only received a 10-8, not the automatic 10-7 that occurs in real boxing.

Thanks for your input on the scoring! At the moment, it goes 10-9 to the fighter with more damage/landed punches like you said. One knockdown is an automatic 10-9 and two knockdowns is a 10-8. In the next update I can correct the scoring so that one knockdown is 10-8 and two knockdowns is 10-7.

Still fooling around in arcade mode on medium difficulty. One of the skills I just obtained having reached level 3 is Quick Reflex (Automatically Block Lower Body When Unguarded). Is this a skill that some CPU opponents will have? The ones I've face do not have it, but that might because I haven't gone up to the highest difficulty.

In this game, left jabs, right crosses, and left or right body shots are the non-power punches. A power amplification (hold instead of press) of each COULD yield a left hook, right uppercut, and hard body shot respectively. QUESTION-It appears that only successful combos also possibly including dodging or blocking punches gets you in a position to deliver a power punch? Is that correct?

In the stat line, these very powerful punches are listed as HOOKS or UPPERCUTS, but the hard body punches are not given any credit. Not a big deal.

The CPU sort of has its own blocking mechanics that doesn't rely on the Quick Reflex skill. You're correct that the lower ranked opponents don't guard their body as much and the higher rank you reach you'll notice that their defense improves.

So you are granted power punches every time you fill up your momentum bar at the bottom of the screen. You fill it up by landing punches and successfully dodging your opponent. Taking damage decreases your momentum. When it gets full, you receive a 'stored' power punch and the bar resets. You can store up to three power punches at a time.

Holding your finger will throw a power punch every time if you have at least one stored. However, if you are attacked while in the charge up animation you will become stunned and lose the power punch. So in essence, the best time to throw a power punch is right after a successful dodge or a counter-punch on your opponent that will result in a stun. Uppercuts deal the most damage but take longest to complete.

Initially I had separate stat lines for power punches to the body, however it cluttered the stat screen a bit and I didn't think it was significant enough to display on its own.

Let me know if you have any other questions

I've released a patch that fixes the judge's scoring among other things. Check out the full notes here:

                              - Career opponents will improve after suffering a loss. No more bullying!
                              - More stamina is drained when punched in the body
                              - Fixed judge's scoring for knockdowns: 2 point deduction for 1 knockdown, 3 point deduction for two knockdowns
