I Got a Few Game Companies Attention About Making a Boxing Videogame
We've thought about it over the years but we honestly do not have boxing expertise in-house here at Big Ant,and I really like to have experts on board in the team before seriously looking at a sport. Happy to chat via email-please email [email protected] and I will follow upLast edited by SHAKYR; 02-19-2018, 01:53 AM.Poe is an advocate for realistic boxing videogames.Tags: None -

Re: I Got a Few Game Companies Attention About Making a Boxing Videogame
One of the biggest misconceptions about a boxing game are licensing expenses.
I know quite a few and spent time with many famous boxers and every single one of them would be in a boxing game for free or at a minimal cost. And others I haven’t interacted are represented by guys like Hearn who understand the big number that would be grown by video games.
When I hear or read people talk about licensing issues, that tells me not only are they sending the wrong people, they aren’t presenting the issue and benefits appropriately.Comment

Exactly! I be hustling like I work for a game company. I have talked to quite a few boxers for many years and fans are get one side.of the story or partial truths. I know for a fact I have.contact boxers who were in Fight Night games. Andre Ward really want in the series. I know there were boxers who said they would do it for free but were turned down by EA.
Many people are guessing the reasons boxers aren't signing or believe people who work for a business that needs its customers trust and support.

FYI, EA UFC always cuts its price around this time. They actually did it earlier with UFC 2.Comment

My question for you PK is do you think a game with only Top Rank and maybe a few Euro promotions like Matchroom would sell? Loma, Pac, Joshua and Crawford are technically your headliners/cover boys.Comment

Victorious Boxers: Ippo sold 400,000 which is ok for an A title but a disaster if its an AAA title.
VGChartz - extensive game chart coverage, including sales data, news, reviews, forums, & game database for PS5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch & PC
No numbers available for VB2 but I'd guess it was less than VB one given there was never a major sequel to the game.
The VB Wii game sold 170,000k.
VGChartz - extensive game chart coverage, including sales data, news, reviews, forums, & game database for PS5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch & PC
Other boxing games like Prizefighter sold 250,000k.
The actual stats dont back up your photo shopped picture. If EA released a boxing game and sold even 500k....somebody is getting fired.
Now I dont think that would happen. I think a good amount of people would buy the game (myself included) but having fighters that people (not just the hardcore) know and want is important. The great thing is that a year or two from now, boxing could likely have more than just Canelo, Floyd, Pac and maybe GGG is household names. Guys like Wilder, Joshua, Crawford, Thurman and Loma could be perfect to sell games and be on the cover.Comment

Re: I Got a Few Game Companies Attention About Making a Boxing Videogame
I agree with Shakyr on this one. I don't think a stable of name fighters is essential to good sales for a boxing game, especially if the game has a very strong Create a Boxer function that allows players to create real fighters for download by all players. Sort of similar to what The Golf Club and The Golf Club 2 do with user-made courses, some of which are better than anything EA ever created.
UFC 2 had Rousey and McGregor on the cover. How did it sell? Rory McIlroy was the top golfer in the world when EA made him its golf cover boy, and that series is dead after its last Rory game, which was terrible.
There are only three active boxers with any name value outside of hardcore fight fans -- Pacquiao, Canelo and GGG. That's it. And many average sports fans still don't know GGG and Canelo that well. They are NOT household names.
So I don't think a name cover athlete means that much for a boxing game since there aren't many name athletes in the sport today. Sad, but true, and a reflection of the horrific job promoters do in marketing and PR.
All that boxing promoters care about today are their checks from TV networks and casinos. Nothing more. They don't care one bit about growing the sport outside of their turf, especially Top Rank and Golden Boy.Last edited by pk500; 03-02-2018, 05:52 PM.Xbox Live: pk4425Comment

UFC 2 sold around 1.6 million copies counting digital copies. Having Rousey and Conor on the cover helped a lot.

Not really because a lot of people still didn't buy it. EA sells totals are added on with the price cut that enticed gamers too buy. I'm a retired boxers and gamer who stay on various gaming sites. Fans want a boxing videogame more than ever. They have even said they would pay 100 hundred dollars to get the game. The conversation were pro we want a boxing videogame.Poe is an advocate for realistic boxing videogames.Comment

Re: I Got a Few Game Companies Attention About Making a Boxing Videogame
Like aholbert said the boxers/fighters sell the game. People will only buy by a boxing game if it has Mayweather or Tyson or McGregor on the cover. Mayweather and Tyson are probably too expensive for any Indy studio to get the rights to. And Conor is still under contract with the UFC and I don't see that changing any time soon. And I wouldn't be shocked at all if Conor retires from MMA he heads over to the WWE where can get a nice deal (where he works 20-25 dates per year and would make around $10M depending on how well his merch sells). Yea you can say names like Wilder, Joshua, GGG, etc. but those names aren't going to grab a casual fighting fans attention. And Pacquiao is iffy in that regard as well. It's nice to see that you can create depth because these boxers want to do it for free or relatively cheap, but if you don't have that #1 guy you are kinda screwed. Look at the UFC they lost Rousey and Conor last year and from what I have read, aholbert correct me if I'm wrong, but the company dipped a little bit last year into the beginning of this year or they only did slightly better than 2016.Comment
