    Cotto vs Corley

Not sure if anyone else is watching this on HBO tonight, but Round 1 was a BATTLE. Cotto gave more than he got, but these guys were really going at it. Pretty entertaining round.

Not sure if Corley is going to make it much longer (especially after recieving a low blow early in the 2nd round).

Saw the fight. Corley got robbed and Cotto showed a lot of inexperience. Corley had him in the 3rd when he was wobbly on his legs. Cotto just swings hard and fast. Reminds me of Mayorga. A good technical fighter will kill this young kid. He is not ready for Gatti, Pretty Floyd, Kostyzu etc.

Corley did not get "robbed" since he was more than likely to lose within the next two rounds anyway. It was, however, a very bad judgment call by the referee since Corley obviously went down on his own accord, not from blows, but because he did what any smart fighter would do if they are in trouble, took a knee in order to get his equilibrium back.

Cotto is nothing like Mayorga if you've seen his previous fights, there are a few reasons why he fought like that last night. His lack of experience caused him to get too "punch happy" due to certain circumstances. Once he saw he could knock Corley down with his strength advantage early on and possibly be the first fighter to ever knockout Corley, he went into slugger mode. Adding to it was that the fight took place in Puerto Rico, his country, and he wanted to give his people something to cheer for, what better way than knocking your opponent out. Cotto in his pervious fights was much more careful with his punches, chalk last night up to his inexperience.

By the way, are you forgetting that he just did what Floyd and Judah were unable to do in 12 rounds, end the fight with their hands.

Cotto had Corley almost as staggered as he was at one point. Before Cotto did his best Zab Judah effect he hit Corley with a HUGE body shot that was ruled a low blow. It was a clean shot and it hurt Corley badly. The fight would probably have ended there if the ref had not stepped in. Having said that if Corley wasn't a moron he could have easily knocked out Cotto in the third. The fight was stopped by a terrible ref that should never be in the business again. Cotto was back on top but the way he was fighting could have been knocked out at any minute.

No, Cotto is not ready for Tsyzu, Floyd, or Judah....he is not even ready for Ricky Hatton. Hatton would have broken Cotto into pieces last night.

I thought it was a bad stoppage.

The keywords in your statement is "last night." Cotto was obviously not fighting like his usual self due largely to his want to please the home crowd. Everyone seems to be ignoring the fact that he stopped Corley in the fifth round, Corley had not been stopped in the 33 fights prior. Corley is no joke, he did lose a split decision to Judah, meaning one judge actually had him ahead. Yes, Cotto got rocked, but it was his first time where he has ever looked in danger and he handled it well for someone yet to be seriously hurt. As far as Rick Hatton goes, we will see how good he is when he goes up against Tsyzu, June 5, hopefully it will be as good as a fight as it looks on paper.
