Fight Night 2 = SAME OLD THING

I have been a fight fan for a decade and a half and fought a little when I was in college, and have purchased every boxing video game ever made... well almost. My favorite BOXING ENGINE is Victorious Boxers - and it's not even close. I thought this year's FN would do the trick, but sadly, it's the same old thing. It IS a very polished game, and quite fun, but it is anything but realistic. Way too many punches thrown, and WAY too many haymakers from the cpu. I got into the game for a couple of days, but now I'm back to Winning Eleven 8 - the best overall sports game ever made.

If somebody would just take the VB engine and just add the rest of FN, we would have an absolute winner on our hands...

I disagree about VB. The best improvement in FN2 is the ability to punch and move and block and move and the jab.

I don't like this version. You have to rely to heavily on special punches and haymakers. I don't see any pure boxing strategy online or off.

What really burns me is the pathetic training/career module.
Anyone that's ever followed boxing knows that training is 95% of the fight game. And yet the training still consists of 3 pathetic exercises.
VB2 has the ability to spar, scout future opponents, control diet, etc.
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE FOR EA NOT TO PUT THIS IN FOR NEXT YEAR!!!

For the love of all that's good at least put in SPARRING next year!!!

So would you guys say that Fight Night 2004 is actually BETTER than this year's version overall?

No way. This game is better but it still has its problems. Control is tighter and despite it being a little too arcadey, the gimmicky controls and the "haymaker" this one is more fun overall.

I bought this game despite a boycott of EA titles because nobody else is making boxing games and I figure unless this sells well nobody ever will. I really wish 2k sports would take on boxing.

Things I want to see in future boxing titles:
No TPC. I hate TPC. Give me buttons, the easiest thing to do in a boxing game should be to throw the punch you want. Making them land and dodging your opponents should be the real skillset.

More realistic punch totals. No idea how to do this as every sports game suffers in this regard. Probably a combo of slowing down the fighters a bit and more penalties for punching yourself out. More damage for punches that land but less punches should land.

Better training - more strategy oriented, no mini-games. They get old after the 100th time. Having the ability to watch your next opponent fight one round might also help.

Detailed career stats - at a minimum name of opponent and result for all previous fights. FN 04 had last five fights, rd 2 has none.

Better challenge system. Maybe once you crack the top 5 you fight an eliminator match for the #1 contender status. Maybe a "grudge" mode where you develop rivalries when climbing the rankings or a guaranteed rematch after title matches. If both fighters win 1 match the 3rd match should be for mega-bucks. The ability to call someone out and be called out. You should get challenges from lesser fighters and be able to duck them if so inclined which would build up the pot for a future fight. The crowd could react accordingly and root for the underdog.

More customization options - should be able to change primary and secondary colors for any trunks once you make enough money. Multiple entourage members - when you're really good you should be able to have 4 or 5 girls and maybe even other fighters walk you to the ring. Customizable soundtrack and entrance moves. If you're a brawler you should be able to always walk in stoically, flashy fighters can have the dance moves.

Belts to the ring! duh. Ability to create and defend belts online.

Better online, allow everyone to fight from the default (left) side at all times.

                    That's just for starters...

Wow corey....got me waiting for your boxing game release. Those were all great ideas.
I've always been a big boxing fan....and I've always looked forward to the next Knock out Kings (now fight night) release and I too wish sega would step in and attempt their own version. If anything the competition would give ea incentive to really bring out the potential i think this game has.
