I think your overall point is well made, however, I disagree with the point above. The lack of depth probably accounts for a skepticism of the market. You can't take games like NHL or Madden and compare them to EA's first real offering on the sport (I don't count EA MMA, it would be like comparing the NFL and CFL from a licensing and corporate backing perspective).
The effort was clear, we (EA) are going to focus on presentation, mechanics, and support in the first round, and based off that, gauge user interest on things to build on coming in UFC 2. If you look at it from a business perspective it works, you've shown a commitment to the community with updates, you have a solid foundation as far as gameplay is concerned, and you have people itching for specific features you can conceivably deliver on the next time around.
EA if nothing else is predictable and like any other company with a brand wants consistency across products. I'd be shocked not to see a massive improvement in modes in the 2nd offering and my expectation is it would have mode depth similar to Madden/NHL/FIFA. They make money hand over foot with Ultimate Team add ons and theres no reason to believe that wouldn't translate.
Undisputed illustrated how this demo buys, I would expect a company like EA (Canada, let me be clear) to be smarter about how they are going to deliver and so far we are trending in the direction I was hoping to see. That's not to say you are 100% correct in being critical, my soliloquy aside, ZERO presence of a tourney or PPV event mode is frustrating, even I can't tell you that turd is a snickers bar.
