Is anyone else just awful at denials?

I can't figure it out, lads.

I would say I am a decent player at this game. I win 85% of my fights online and never have any issues in standup even against extremely competitive standup players.

I can deny takedown attempts and clinch attempts all day long, flawlessly.

I can NOT, however, seem to get denials on the ground. The only time I manage to get a denial on the ground is when I am on top, in halfguard, they start a transition to fullguard as I transition over to top mount. As I land in top mount, they're still completing the transition to FG and I can deny it from top mount. This works.

I just don't know what I'm doing wrong. I have extremely fast reactions and will hold R2+ the direction as soon as I see the animation start but it never works unless it is the unique situation mentioned above.

Could it be that I am doing it too quickly? Too slowly (would be surprised..) or what?

Games been out a few months now and I can't believe I still havent got the hang of this. I could deny forever and ever on the ground in UFC1. I'm sure it's not a skill issue, I must just be doing something wrong...

    This is on PS4, too.

Yeah, sometimes in online matches I can't deny anything but I know it might be due to latency. How are you with denials in offline play? It just takes practice to read the animations and immediately inputting the directions. Sometimes if your opponent is predictable you can even input the denials before them and get a reversal.

Re: Is anyone else just awful at denials?

      latency def. makes a difference

I can deny 95%+ of the computer's transitions (clinch, ground, etc) with ease --- no lag

Online though...even against not-so-great competition...maybe can only deny 50%...in games with almost no lag that def. goes up to 75%+; on the other hand when there's lag, it can go down to 25% or lower :/

So a big part of it is lag, I think

But overall if you want practice --- go to Practice Mode against Maia or some good BJJ type fighter and put it on 'advanced grappling' then just keep practicing denials, GnP, etc over and over and over and eventually you'll get a lot better at denials

Also be sure to not pre-deny! If you try to deny before they attempt...you shot yourself in the foot

      Hope this helps man

The latency just ruins the denials.

Same for me, I deny almost every computer transition, but online only about 50%.

sometimes it's latency, others I think it is just that the opponent's fighter has higher ground and clinch stats. I've noticed if I fight someone who uses someone like Dos Anjos and I'm someone like Benson Henderson that sometimes denials just flat out don't work when they worked against other fighters. This is even when they don't use fakes and I know exactly what he is going to do and sometimes just can't stop it.

This. I swept a guy last night by preemptively denying. Couldn't stop a takedown for ****. Couldn't deny for ****. Started denying early, and what do you know? I'm denying. Latency kills this game worse than anything else.

I'm decent with denying on the ground, but clinch? The unhelpful camera angles and the way denials swicth around depending on stance make the tells very hard for me to learn

in othe hand we have some guys that just deny everything, to be honest high divisions ground game is equal to stall and wait for a deny

I honestly think it is their set up. More than likely have good internet and their TVs/monitors introduce little latency. As well as quick as hell reflexes.

If you're facing someone who's denial happy (and won't do much else) --- throw in some fakes or 'baby punches' --- movement on the screen might make them deny when they shouldn't, which might allow you to sneak a transition in

Dont' overuse fakes or baby punches though....if they catch on to you, they'll just transition through your small strikes/fakes and you'll be in a world of hurt

its funny how much lag can change a online fight.

Even if you over use fakes and baby punches you can still deny in the middle of a fake. It's like the online latency allows for it. I know i have done this many of times. ( BTW i spam the **** out of fakes, so I have an idea. lol)

I've given up on using fakes online. They get denied constantly.

Yes I'm only flicking the stick to fake.

The whole momentum/ground game system feels as if it was designed for offline play.

It's as if it didn't go through testing with latency to see if it's working or not.Just feels rushed on that aspect.

Yes it did improve a lot of the spamming and glitching and abusing that the predacessor had,but it created way too many issues, since everything is timed based and the specific game's engine,is not designed to be played online without a noticable delay/lag.

Don't even get me started on the recycled awfull matchmaking system..It starts games that make both players "WTF am i doing with my life? Why am i playing this laggy/delayed mess?"

It's the reason i only play quick match past couple of months, because i can quit the momment the game begins if i see a noticable delay/lag and nobody bats an eye.

The grappling is a great concept, but as soon as a game has a slight delay it completely falls apart. Denies stop working, meters don't fill, etc. It just isn't very well catered towards online play. It also feels very turn based. It needs an overhaul. I'd rather have it where you could block transitions by just holding the direction of where they're going instead of having to time it. That way they can still go different directions but you don't need to think about delay unless you wanna reverse a transition. I kindof preferred UD3's grappling as it felt more like a chessmatch to me rather than fill this meter, wait three seconds, strike twice, deny, fill meter, etc.
