I get what you guys are saying and you're technically correct, yes everyone has the same option to pick Faber as well to even everything out. But, I believe the big point of this mode was to allow people to play out the upcoming marquee matchups against other players in an environment where each fighter is on relatively equal footing due to exact same stats across the board. Unlike ranked, it was supposed to be the mode where you could finally pick a non-champion and not have to worry.
Think of it like this: In COD if there is one gun that has the highest rate of fire and damage, and all the other guns have inferior stats, that's a problem. If one proclaims it to be a problem, others could just say "why not just pick the same gun too?". While true, you have to admit that having one gun being distinctively more powerful than all the others is bad game design, there's no balance. UFC 2 is a bit of an exception to this though, because it has to try to accurately represent how good the fighters are in real life in relation to other fighters, and understandably so. But with the live event competition mode, you have something that is supposed to supercede that concept for the sake of fair competition to truly see who the best players are. But unfortunately there was an overlooked wrench that got thrown in with this whole stiff/heavy jab and straight cross issue that puts this whole mode back to square one in terms of what it was trying to achieve, imo.
