I'm in no position to tell you what you should have done, without having seen what happened.
But a few things to consider - could you have stopped him from getting Thai clinch? Denying or striking would stop him getting to this position.
Let's say he threw a combo into the Thai clinch (harder to deny when done in this manner.)
Thai is a powerful position to have, so your thought process should be to get out of Thai. Blocking a strike and moving into single collar works. If he's denied this, you're going to have to block more strikes before transitioning, otherwise it's easier for him to deny the transition, resulting in a more significant stamina advantage (where strikes hurt more AND he has more time to deny any transition).
If I get denied in Thai clinch, I'll try block another strike before faking single collar, then breaking. Or vice versa, whether I want to stay in the clinch or not.
Game plans and strategies are formed around making reads. From where someone transitions to, to whether they try to deny every transition. Small reads, but informative. Without seeing exactly what happened, it's hard to say "if you done this, you would have avoided the ko" but perhaps these are things you can consider in future.
