Please help with submission defense - it seems almost impossible

    Hey guys,

Is anyone else having trouble with submission defense?

After many attempts I managed to complete the submission defense challenge on "hard", but doing it on "pro" just seems impossible. Like you'd basically have to randomly guess where the A.I. is going to "push" and also totally guess at chances to counter with the L-stick (which flash up for a nanosecond on that difficulty level). In fact, I've not been able to use the L-stick successfully to counter any submission at all, in game or in challenge, at any difficulty level.

So does anyone else have the same problem? What's the secret here? If the A.I. ever get me in a submission it's basically game over (although, thankfully they attempt it so rarely it doesn't really matter - my Career Mode player is a jui-jitsu guy, undefeated after 11 fights [Normal difficulty], and throughout his entire career he's never had to defend a single submission attempt).

On the other hand, I have less trouble with doing submissions myself. Although it is getting more difficult now that my player is a "prospect" and facing more serious opposition (as it's getting harder, I'm winning descisions by dominating on the ground and lots of submission attmepts, instead of actually tapping them, but I'm not so worried about that) It's just the submission defense. It's so difficult compared to anything else in the game I feel like I must be missing a trick or two.

The AI is a bit too good at sub offense.

Having said that, are you using the UFC 3 strategy, or the UFC 2 one? The new strategy is trying to build the 4 gates equally, except for the last gate, where you go for two gates, maybe feinting a third, like in UFC 2.

Building the gates equally is the viable thing, because at each stage, your gates fall back, the gates that are more filled falling more. So, if they're equall, you lose less progress overall. Just remember to switch your tactics at the last gate, when you should have two gates already with a good progress.

Brother the AI has a death grip good luck but just a note , stamina needs to be full to have a bleak chance of escaping the submission!

Great tips mate, thanks. That's exactly the kind of advice I was hoping to get.

I never played UFC 2. In fact, I never had a console before. My work just bought me one for my 40th birthday (yes I'm too old to play video games), so I went out and bought a game I thought I'd like (I do BJJ in real life and am a big fan of Joe Rogan Experience and the UFC). I'm not really an experienced "gamer" in anything at all. I've been playing UFC3 for about one week. Haha.

The only problem is that it just seems to be so damn quick. Like you need lightning reflexes. As soon as I start defending one gate, the AI switches. I seem to make like one milimeter or less progress. I even tried just randomly swining the thumbpad around because that's basically what it amounts too.

And the left stick is even harder. It basically blinks on an off. I guess it's just a matter of getting a feel for when it's going to flash and being lightnight fast in that millisecond. Seems unnecessarily hard though. Even on "normal" difficultly, against any grappler more skilled than Mark Hunt or some other pure striker, it's basically a given tap-out if they get a submission hold on. (and my character has 100 for both submission offense and defense!)

P.S. ... for both submission offense and defense, does the left thumb stick marker always flash up in the same gate order for the same submission? For example, for an arm-bar will it always flash left first, top second, bottom third, etc? Something I've been meaning to keep an eye on but keep forgetting.

The AI is too good at everything on Pro and up. Its a god at countering and dodging on the feet and on the ground you need some luck to tap it out. My strategy is focus on all 4 gates early and then switch it up to 3 or 2 in the later stages for escaping. For tapping the AI is damn near impossible tbh lol.

As far as I know, it's random. It's an attention check for the attacker, while he is also worried about the defensive gates. As the attacker, I try to keep my focus of vision in the middle, instead of looking at each defensive gates as it moves, otherwise I mess up the attacking gate when it appears.

Yeah ... for some reason attacking with submissions is far easier than defending them. I'd say three or four times easier.
