    UFC 4: Adding another range.

So far, in this game we have these ranges.

    Elbow Range
    Punching Range
    Kick Range
    Step Kick Range
    Out of Range

    See something missing?

    Hook range.

On top of the issues where the game magnetically slides you forward even if you're throwing a planted combination (As shown on my Twitter), or when the third strike in a combination STILL hits your block, despite it not being a combination where they had to pause after the 2nd strike to maintain range (Jab Lead Hook Straight, Straight Lead Hook Straight come into mind), a issue is the lack of a true hook range, and this is something that needs to be added for UFC 4.

You can't really land a check Hook in this game, it's effectiveness is nil, and being that the game favors who lands first, even if your opponent lands a stuffed, in close, smothered jab, it won't matter if they follow an uppercut after it.

The Hook should always win the exchange when they're in your face, regardless of if they land first, because a smothered jab would not generate enough power against a hook at said range.

If there's anything I'd like to see in UFC 4, is the addition of Hook Range, and removal of this occasional magnetic striking. (Check out @ARomeroXVII’s Tweet: https://twitter.com/ARomeroXVII/stat...556042240?s=09 )

Things like a Nick Diaz rear hook landing on a ducking Matt Serra already brings pain to my soul, I would hope that there are monumental fixes to lunges, tracking, and ranges.

Slightly different topic but counter hooks in general are ineffective unless its against another hook. Hooks coming off headmovement havent got enough single shot power.

Depends on the way you sway. I've minor back swayed a head kick and gotten 1HKOs with a lead hook in Round 1, but that may be due to vulnerability. Ducking hooks aren't really recommended IMHO, but sway hooks or pull back lead hooks work.

Again though, that's a different topic altogether. When it comes to exchanges, Hooks should be beating the stuffed jab every time. Elbows should be beating them too, but the Elbows themselves are inconsistent. I can literally put the fighters nose to nose together and the elbows can miss.

Sorry for changing the topic. Ducking hooks are a real thing IRL, tbh they are one of the more effective counters irl. Im comparing the differences between between the game and irl, maybe thats the wrong approach. I could test the damage of slip hooks if thats of any benefit.

I didn't necessarily say that they're NOT effective, I say I wouldn't recommend it in terms of competitive gameplay considering the amount of uppercuts people throw.

I use them myself when I use guys like Mendes and Edgar, or Usman and Colby, since it's very common for wrestlers to use the duck to feint a takedown to land an uppercut.

I'm VERYYY picky with my timing to avoid getting uppercutted to Oblivion. If you want to have a discussion on realistic counters to be used on UFC 3, DM me, I have plenty, but please , stay on topic on this thread.

Range in this game is definitely messed up. Imo it’s missing more than just hook range

I already made a detailed post about it awhile back

                Good stuff.

I don't want to throw the baby out w/ the bath water, as striking is in a pretty darn good place now (especially as compared to this time last year!) ----

But I would love to see a nearly complete overhaul of all range & hit detection mechanics in-game. You've pointed out several of the issues recently here & on twitter.

I'm sure some of them can be patched over (literally in UFC 3; or figuratively in the next iteration of UFC 4) .... but some of the issues are inherent to guts of the game engine itself and I'm not sure if they can be fixed without a serious overhaul.

Will be interesting to see what EA does go-forward.....risk upsetting the balance of striking with a big time overhaul of the physics engine? I'd love it, but would have some growing pains.....or, keep standing similar to how it is today, perhaps add a few features or tweaks, but no upsetting the status quo since it took half a decade to get to this spot ....

They can definitely keep the system, I love it, but they'll likely add something new for UFC 4. Fixing hit detection issues, magnetic sliding, etc etc.

Now grappling with more locomotion, especially the clinch and more movement on the ground, that would be phenomenal.

Tbh i think they should add as many possible ranges as possible, even the differnce between short and long hook ranges would be nice.

Long hook? Basically a haymaker or an overhand.

                      I think:

                      Elbow Range
                      Hook Range/Uppercut Range
                      Jab/Straight Range
                      Lunging Punch Range
                      Kick Range
                      Step In Kick Range
                      Out of Range

                      Would be enough.

Im talking about specific ranges that match our ability to throw punches at specific ranges.

Maybe a better method would be adding lots of minor hitboxes that each take a certain amount of damage as well as for things like shoulders and arms where no head damage is taken.

And how would they implement that with fluidity?
