    Nooby beginner help please!

Just started a career mode and been knocked spark out twice in a row. I've knocked down opponents but not been able to rush in and pound yet, and I've tried to grapple, dodge, block etc.

My question is - how do you get use to all the different controls? There's so much to get your head round and doesn't seem to be any guided tutorial system past watching a load of videos in the main menu. There's practice mode, but it seems like you have to go into the controls menu and look at one thing, then try it, go back and look at something else, etc etc.

How did people get to grips with all the different mechanics when they started so they don't keep getting the s*** kicked out of them?

The lack of a tutorial is one of the greatest weaknesses of this game. However Most of the grappling, both in the clinch and on the ground, have barely changed since the last game. So some of us have been playing it for like 4 years.

I learned striking mostly at first and only incorporated other aspects as I progressed through the online leaderboards. You might find online easier since you will lose enough to start being matched with players of a similar skill.

Unfortunately this game was very rough at launch. Many of the mechanics in the current version of the game were added though patches to try to smooth out the problems. Without much budget the game developers did their best to make it better but had zero time for any in game tutorials. A few videos are in the game that cover the first couple updates. Most of us had to read the forums amd watch YouTube videos for the rest. There are some things you might figure out on your own but the game has a lot of complexity as you start learning the subtitles. These forums are a good place to start

Pretty much everyone had a rough learning curve when the game came out. Plus, fighting games naturally have a rough learning curve.

I'd say start by focusing on a few aspects at a time and go from there. For example, the game has an excessive amount of modifiers for different strikes but I'd say ignore most of them and only use L1 (hook/headkick) and L2 (body) for now until you get the hang of it. These basic strikes will be the foundation of the whole game anyway whereas the more convoluted stuff (spin attacks, push etc) are more situational.

Regarding grappling, I'd suggest that focus on learning the important transitions. For example, if you are on closed half guard top then your opponent (on the bottom) can only only do transitions to left or right. One of the directions will be for full guard/get-up whereas the opposite direction takes your back.

Practically speaking, you should prioritize defending the full-guard one because that one is much faster and easier to do. The back take is extremely slow so you can block it reactively as long as you know the direction (which comes with experience. The directions are somewhat consistent).

TLDR: Experience and focusing on the basics/fundamentals and slowly integrating the more advanced controls.
      ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks for the advice both, I'll try not to complicate things early!! This is my first UFC game so no prior fighting game experience really, definitely a learning curve and a huge shame about the lack of a proper tutorial. I don't need my hand holding the whole game but it would be nice to try the things it shows you in the videos after you watch them. I tried the ground finish thing with the wheel but in practice mode they seem to get out of it before you've had a chance to do anything.

I've been trying to find out how to capitalise on knocking an opponent down and seen that running over to finish them has been patched and people only seem to be able to awkwardly stand around them until the get up again...

There's also a few guys who produce decent tutorials on YouTube.

          Romero:

I have a guide with every combo in the game and every fighters level of combo in the game take a look at that first along with Romero's guides pryoxis guides and sugatarus guides. Its imperative you read all the patch notes as well. Also sugata has a 50000 word guide as well detailing every mechanic.

Thank you for taking the time to come to the forums and ask around. As a user you're giving us the privilege of presenting you with extra ways to learn the game; in face of an unfortunate lack of tutorials in-game.

About the knockdowns, they vary based on how severe they are and how many have occurred. If the knockdown is among the first ones and/or you barely depleted the opponent's health, without much overkill; then the opponent won't be so helpless. But after a beating or a knockdown by a huge strike, you'll be able to pounce and land a couple of free punches before they recover or are just finished.

Please keep coming back here to ask for advice and tell us the stuff that's harder to get into. Your journey as someone who is unfamiliar with the previous titles and with fight games in general, but still has the drive to search the forums is very unique. So you're very special case for us to observe and learn from.

I recommend checking out practice mode as well. Its not super in depth but you can use it for a couple of cool things. Strike recording will allow you to input a combo or takedown or anything and then use playback to have the computer perform the input over and over. Then You can practice countering specific things that are giving you trouble
