Lets have an adult conversation. Devs what are you willing to borrow from undisputed

First off I'm asking for the sake of good dialog that we please all be respectful to the devs if they find the time to post. Im sure they're already working on the next game. This is not a fallout and doesn't need to be responded too. I understand this topic is a hot issue.

But my question is what is the reservation about just taking undisputed 3s ground game? Or at least the good parts like the transition system(with punch flick fixed) and the ground and pound and rocked states? Are there legal road blocks? I'm under the assumption that you guys own the rights to undisputed 3. Am I wrong?

The grappling in that game felt realistic. Was deep and fun for hardcores and casuals. And it just worked. It felt like grappling. What are you guys willing to use from that game?

It seems super unlikely that they'd ever just abandon their current system and copy UD3. They spent a lot of time, money, and effort creating the system they have now. Yes, UD3 has good grappling, and it does feel better, but in some ways, the current devs probably look at it as a step backwards. There was huge emphasis on the fact that with the newer EA UFC grappling system, fighters are able to move independently from one another. Grappling feels a little less static compared to the likes of UD3.

In large, I agree that the UD3 system simply feels better to use. But it's hard to say that devs should just abandon all their hard work and go use some other system. The system isn't necessarily bad, it's just flawed. With some big changes, it can be better.

The current grappling system needs to be scrapped entirely, and re-started fresh.

Terrible, terrible, terrible grappling in EA UFC.

UD3's grappling wasn't perfect, but OP is 100% correct that it just FELT better. It felt way more realistic, and actually felt like grappling. It had a bunch of positions that aren't in the EA UFC series, but at it's core, it just FEELS so much better to play.

The way you actually would hold onto people feels so tactile, engaging, and realistic, and makes EA's "fake" and denial system look so arcadey and goofy.

Also the quarter circle swoops to initiate a transition makes a HUGE difference in feel. The fact the animation was dynamically correlated to your stick movement; As you moved the stick along the quarter circle turn, the animation would play out in relation to your stick position. This lets you fake a transition... by actually faking the transition.

It's like Tony Hawks Pro Skater, vs SKATE. Pro Skater has nothing but button inputs for movement and tricks, but SKATE everything is done with the analog sticks, which revolutionized the gameplay, making it feel so engaging and realistic, the idea of going back to buttons after playing SKATE seems totally insane. SKATE is so tactile, and engaging, and FEELS so good to play, it makes THPS feel ancient, and outdated.

I genuinely think the change from quarter circle analog transitions to watching a bar fill up completely ruins all immersion from the grappling, and was a massive mistake.

Then there is the magical "Grappling Advantage", which while initially was well intentioned and based in reality, has since been turned into a purely videogame mechanic to balance a foundationaly poor system, entirely divorced from reality. Grapple Advantage has turned into the WD-40, and Duct Tape, that holds this broken system together.

Grapple Advantage is 1 of the major factors that devolves the grappling into a baby punching, camping on denials, waiting game, to try and slowly build GA, or get the first denial, to get GA. It mutates the entire grappling meta into something that no longer resembles MMA Wrestling/BJJ/Grappling.

Tony Hawk games have historically enjoyed much higher critical and commercial success than Skate. The recent Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 for instance has higher metacritic score than any Skate game.

This is an absurd comparison to begin with since THPS and Skate are clearly going for different philosophies. It is equivalent to comparing Pro Evolution Soccer and Super Mario Strikers or 2k and NBA Jam.

To answer OP, the main thing I would adapt from Undisputed 3 is the ground and pound system with both how posturing works and how ground damage works. I believe that would have the largest impact because ground and pound is crucial to an MMA game and UFC 4 has my least favorite ground and pound system in any MMA game.
        ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
