UFC 5 needs a Universe Mode

Instead of the career mode we should have a universe mode where you have PPVs and fight nights, fighters move up and down the rankings all the time, if they have a losing streak, they change weight classes, if the losing streak continues, they go to the wfa, or cage warriors, or strikeforce (if the license allows it to have a venue for each secondary organization).
New talents arise from the DWCS or the secondary organizations. You can even make a TUF with those new talents. Those new fighters can be RNG like career mode. The player can either sim all the fights in a card and see how it plays out or he can play every fight on a card.
They can also expand this by having an injury system (and thus having interim champions and unification bouts). Add a broadcast introduction outside the arena and commentators talking about the upcoming fights and cards being announced during that event. Cutscenes from weigh ins, Press conferences , UFC Photoshoots (just like ufc 3,4 career mode has. Honestly just reuse them and add even more) would make this even better.
Of course this means that rankings are done and fights are booked automatically. Each save in a universe mode would have completely different outcome, totally unscripted. Really this would have so much replayability. And those are just a few ideas. The franchise should move forward than having a mix of a career and story mode. This Universe mode would replace career ,as the player could just use only one fighter.

Never say never. They actively asked for this kind of thing in a survey earlier this year. Perhaps in a couple of years.

Agree with all of this except, you should have matchmaking control. But then you could add in negotiations with fighters where they turn down certain fights or dates for various reasons.

I heard fans discussing Universe Mode back during EA UFC 1 and 2. This is just one of them; of course, there were many other great ideas being mentioned, but unfortunately, many of them were still overlooked.

Just what you want to see in a game. They asked about modern day videogaming things. Interaction online with others, or creative outlet, logically inferring CaF. Among other things like narratives and - of course - a feeling of pride and accomplishment (achievements). I think it was only for potential beta testers.


As for Universe. EA UFC 2 was the closest we came to that. There was a decent TUF mode and you also got to see entire fight cards unfold. Now we get random champ changes and entire weight classes just devoid of any fights. It's one of the things where the game took a step backwards, like the grappling system.

Think of it like ea fifa career mode with the only difference you have the ability not to pick any team and see how leagues play out by themselves, how the european competitions like champions league play out.

Think of it like ea fifa career mode with the only difference you have the ability not to pick any team and see how leagues play out by themselves, how the european competitions like champions league play out.

It can be both at once. Look to how the WWE games do Universe mode. The matchmaking all works itself out like you're suggesting, but you also have the ability to go in and change anything at any point.

But my guess is WWE allows matchmaking because the automated matchmaking offers one on one matches or other basic rulesets mostly , even tho there are a dozen different rulesets (TLC, ladder etc.). That's not the case in the UFC where the most bizarre fact that has happened is the BMF belt and the Diaz 5 rounds fights that are not main events. Also, the WWE games released a different mode that focuses on the matchmaking aspect, called GM mode or something like that. Don't get me wrong I'd love a Dana White mode where you make fights and try to maximize the company's profit, but a universe mode is definitely a priority. But still, I'd prefer an automated matchmaking because it's exciting that you'll never know what fights will be booked. However, fighters who have lost their last match or two should not fight anyone higher than them , and fighters who finish their fights should climb the rankings higher than those who win by decisions.

I've always thought of it more like a "franchise" mode from other sports games. The UFC is a team, you manage the team, and you play the games.

The team is the fighters, and the games would be the fights in this scenario.

The version we have been pitching for years is basically WWE2k's universe mode. At its bare bones, you are the promoter. You sign fighters. You schedule events and fights. Whats been frustrating is that the game already includes alot of the pieces for a universe mode but the dev team has never been convinced that its the best approach.

I cant speak to what they will do in future versions of the series but my biggest frustration with the series is that for offline players they continue to offer the same basic modes they have since UFC 1.

I cant speak to what they will do in future versions of the series but my biggest frustration with the series is that for offline players they continue to offer the same basic modes they have since UFC 1.

That sounds more like the GM mode from the WWE games instead of the Universe mode. And to be honest, I don't think that would work on the UFC games. Here's why. GM mode focuses more on the competition between the shows SmackDown, Raw, ECW. You try to get the best wrestlers, make the bigger draws, money etc. If you try to transfer this concept to the MMA games it would have to include other companies like Bellator, PFL, ONE FC otherwise it makes no sense. No doubt, it would be awesome , but I don't ever see it happening due to the licenses and they HUGE roster it would need.
What I propose is a sandbox. Automated rankings, fights booked based on their performance, weight class changes if a fighter is performing bad. Superfights if the champion is dominating a division. For each match on the card, the player has 3 options: Play the fight, specate the fight or sim the fight.

I agree. GM mode won't work in this line of games. What they COULD do is feature some sort of storyline version of TUF, the one where two teams/gyms would compete for the season. That could make use of the booking and recruiting mechanics, but I don't think it's a good option as it would put too little emphasis on the actual "career", which still comes down to you hunting for the belt, each and every time.


In the end, we just need the mode to keep track of W/L's, and be able to switch the belt and champ gear. That is pretty much it. We can book fights in event mode, but you'd need a notebook to keep track of everything. Long term, it needs to spawn new fighters, but you could make those yourself, if CaF mode wasn't as crappy and limited.

I still contend that if they bumped up the quality of event mode presentations, added a few more venues and gave us more CAF slots, I could still make it work with what I've been doing on spreadsheets.

But also, it's such a staple of sports games, I just wish they'd go to one of the other departments in their building at Madden or NHL and just let them brainstorm it a bit and see what they could come up with.

To ignore that a big majority of fight fans get caught up in the "what's next" of it all is a big miss for this game.
