    Undisputed Q&A's

I'm not sure if any of this was posted but here's all of it anyway...

How is striking going to work?

UFC 2009 Undisputed's striking, at its core, very closely follows traditional fighting game philosophy and mechanics. Each of the fighter's limbs is mapped to a face button, allowing players to throws punches or kicks from either side of a fighter's body and string together any number of combos. UFC 2009 Undisputed's combos are rooted in reality, so common combinations like a boxer's one-two combo (a left jab followed by a right cross) create the basis of the standing striking game.

Range plays an important role in striking while standing. From medium to far range (what we call Striking Range and Probing Range), fighters have the room to fully extend their attacks and effectively use their reach to close distance or keep an opponent at bay. While in very close quarters (Clinch Range), fighters cannot fully utilize the range of jabs and body kicks, so instead they use elbow strikes and knees. Hooks are shortened up to allow for more accurate contact in close, while uppercuts can come into play as well. The player has full control over which type of strike to utilize based on the range they choose to fight from at any given time.

The intricacy of the standing striking game really comes through the use of the various modifiers to the base attacks. Holding the Attack Height Modifier while throwing a strike will change the target of a punch from the head to the body, while body kicks will now be thrown to the legs. The strength of an attack can be modified as well. A Weak Strike is performed simply by pressing the appropriate face button, while a Strong Attack is performed by pressing toward the opponent with the Left Analog and pressing a face button. This changes a Left Jab into a Left Hook. While weak strikes will not do a lot of damage, they can interrupt strong strikes and are much quicker. Strong attacks do significantly more damage and can interrupt clinch attempts or takedowns, but they are generally slower and easier to counter.

Each fighter also has one of three Striking Techniques (Boxing, Kick Boxing, or Muay Thai) that each has its own strengths and strategies. Boxers have the most powerful and varied arsenal of punches and are very adept at feints and counters while controlling range and setting up vicious combos. Kickboxers mix a solid boxing game with flashy head kicks and powerful leg kicks and benefit greatly from range. Muay Thai fighters are very powerful, in-close fighters with knees and elbows and can do major damage from their Muay Thai clinch (or plum), which stifles an opponent's offense and allows them to deliver crushing knees to the head and body. Holding the Technique Modifier while striking will perform a Technique attack that matches the fighting style being utilized. This can change a normal boxer's punch into a ducking hook or a kick boxer's punch to a spinning backfist.

How will Submissions work and will they be easy to get out of?

All fighters have a set of Submissions they can do from various Positions; this set is augmented by their Grappling Technique (Wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or Judo). Pushing in on the Ultimate Fighting Control (Right Analog) initiates a Submission attempt, while the Position of the fighters determines the type of Submission attempted. This could be a Rear Naked Choke (if the attacker has the opponent's back) or possibly a Kimura if the fighter has the opponent in Side Control. Using the Technique Modifier button can pull off unique Submissions if the fighter's current Grappling Technique supports doing so.

Once an attempt has been made, the fighters enter a struggle. The fighter working the Submission must rapidly rotate the Ultimate Fighting Control (getting a bonus based on his Submission Offense Stat) to try and lock in the Submission and force the tap. The defender has two options to choose from. If he has a high Submission Defense Stat, it is in his best interest to try a Technical Escape. This is done by rotating the Ultimate Fighting Control just like the attacker. Escaping through a Technical Escape leaves the defender at the advantage and places him in a dominant Position. The other option is to attempt a Brute Force Escape. This is better for fighters with a high Strength Attribute and will leave fighters standing if successful, affording no advantage to either fighter. Fighters who have a low energy level due to exerting themselves have a much higher chance of being submitted.

Will fighters be able to go up/down in weight class?

For the sake of being as faithful to the UFC as possible, we do not allow fighters to compete outside of their home weight class. We do, however, support fighters competing in multiple weight classes if they have actually done so in the past. For example, we allow BJ Penn to fight in multiple divisions.

How is training going to work?
Like many traditional fighting games, UFC 2009 Undisputed contains a few different ways to train players in the intricacies of the combat system while keeping their skills polished. Tutorial Mode walks the player through every aspect of the combat system, from strikes and submissions to counters and transitions. The interactive tutorial ensures that upon completion, players are fully trained and prepared for their first fight.

Practice Mode allows players to hone their skills against an artificial oppoenent while displaying important information such as damage of attacks and the location of impact. The practice opponent can be customized to facilitate the type of practice or training experience the player requires. It can be set to simply stand in place and absorb blows, which is great for practicing combos. It can be fully AI or player controlled, replicating the type of experience a player would encounter in an actual fight without the fear of getting knocked out or running out of time. It can also be a mix of both, having particular behaviors assigned based on the intent of the player (such as always try to counter, always try to block the first strike, or always attempt to grapple).

Players who want to practice a very specific facet of the game have the option of instantly placing both fighters into any position or range of their choosing. This eliminates the need to continually have to take down a fighter and pass his guard if the intent is to simply practice locking in a kimura from Side Control, or to practice the timing required to escape from a Muay Thai Clinch.

Explain create a fighter. What can you customize? How about cauliflower ear?
UFC 2009 Undisputed's Create-a-Fighter allows players to create fighters from scratch that can be used in single player or multiplayer modes. The areas of customization are endless, allowing players to modify everything from hair color and facial structure, to scars and tattoos. And yes, even the level of ear damage can be customized (per ear). In addition, players will also be able to customize their fight gear, Attributes, Fighting Techniques and Fighting Skills. We'll be sharing more information about these levels of customization in the near future.

    Will there be a demo?
We put this answer into the Q&A earlier this week, but for those who didn't see it yet:

Yes, UFC 2009 Undisputed will have a a downloadable, pre-launch demo for UFC 2009 Undisputed on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles. More details on the demo's official release date will be released in the near future.

At what point will a ref call a fight? Do you get those satisfying 2-3 quick strikes on a helpless victim before the ref tackles you off?

Much like in real life, the ref will call a fight when a fighter has been knocked out or is otherwise unable to defend himself. And yes, there will be times when you will be able to land a few additional strikes on an opponent that has just been out on the ground or as he's about to hit the floor.

Dodging, bobbing weaving, counters? How do you mitigate damage in UFC 2009: Undisputed?

There are several ways todefend against strikes, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Blocking a strike mitigates a percentage of damage based on several factors such as the attacker's striking power and the defender's defense rating (among others). Itis possible for a blocked attack to do no damage at all, or, conversely, to be almost as damaging as a clean strike based on the situation.

Countering nullifies a strike completely, but is more difficult to pull off than simply blocking. The payoff for successfully countering a strike, however, is huge! Not only does it completely negate an attack but it almost always places the defender in an advantageous position. Some fighters even have unique counters specific to them.

Finally a fighter can avoid astrike altogether by dodging. Fighters can dodge and sway by quickly steppingto the side or back to avoid strikes and setup opportunities for their own offense. Some attacks have dodging or swaying built in, such as a boxer's ducking hook or BJ Penn's signature jabs. Being able to quickly move in and outof an opponent's strike range while avoiding attacks is a technique that is important to learn and will take some time to master.

Can you slam people a la Rampage or Matt Hughes? Can you pull off shoulder hoists ordevastating slams?

Definitely! Wrestling has a full array of slams that can be performed from various positions and some fighters, such as Matt Hughes, have signature slams available only to them. If you've seen the most recent Jardine vs. Jackson gameplay fight preview, there's a visual example of what some slams in Undisputed will look like.

What is the heads up display? Is it going to be health bar and all kindsa things or is it going to be streamlined and more subtle?

By default, UFC 2009 Undisputed has no heads up display (HUD) of any kind on the screen. We really wanted to capture the essence of a real UFC fight, and part of that was to make sure that the player was focused on the action inside the Octagon. Players do, however, have the option of enabling a Stamina/Energy meter if they so choose. Even then, the focus will still rest on your player and his opponent.

Are knockouts preanimated or are they controlled by the engine?

Knockouts are a mix of animation and physics simulation. This approach allows for a variety of interesting knockouts to occur based on where the opponent was struck, what position he was in while struck and the force of the blow landed.

Are we gonna see brutal hammerfists?

Of course! Hammerfists, elbows, punches and any other attacks that fighters in the UFC levy during ground and pound are faithfully recreated in all their brutal glory! Depending on how your ground and pound goes, you might see some messy results if you land enough hits.

Any way to get out of a rear naked choke? Or is it good game once they start the submission?

All submissions are escapable up to a point. The player will have to time any escape from an arm bar, rear naked choke, etc. as the opponent's move is being executed. Once a sumbission has been fully locked in, however, it is all over - especially with the rear naked choke.

How will the stand up game, striking and defense work in Undisputed?

Delivering the most realistic, brutal Mixed Martial Arts experience ever conceived on a console, UFC 2009 Undisputed's stand-up striking allows gamers to have full control over every bone-jarring knee, leg-buckling elbow and vicious fight ending knockout. But the stand up game isn't simply about throwing wild punches with reckless abandon … taking the time to learn the sweet science behind the stand-up game and each of the three striking disciplines may just pay off with a championship belt!

    Offense

Few things are more satisfying in UFC 2009 Undisputed than landing the perfect left hook that sends a mouthpiece flying before your opponent crumples to the Octagon mat! But the stand-up game is not only about throwing bombs. MMA stand-up is a constantly evolving game, and a fighter needs to use the right tool for the right job. While "weak" strikes such as jabs do not do a lot of damage and cannot knock out an opponent, they are very quick and can be used to keep opponents off balance and set up power shots. Strong strikes, such as a kickboxer's head kick or a boxer's ducking hook, are damaging and potentially match-ending on connect, but missing means leaving a fighter open to counters.

    Range

Utilizing range is key to becoming a dominant striker in UFC 2009 Undisputed. Without understanding the options available from the three distinct ranges, it is impossible to become a well-rounded fighter. Inside Clinch Range, fighters can't get full extension on punches or kicks and instead rely on knees, elbows and short, crisp uppercuts to break an opponent down. Striking Range is the sweet spot for strikers, allowing punches and kicks to extend fully for maximum impact. Probing Range is ideal for hanging back and baiting opponents to recklessly jump in, where a quick dashing strike (such as a flying knee or spinning backfist) can end the fight instantly.

Range plays a vital role in not only offense, but defense. Working off the jab from Striking Range while picking off attacks is the perfect way to not only rack up points on the judges' scorecards, but slowly and deliberately chip away at an opponent before moving in for the kill. Understanding when to best utilize each of the three striking ranges allows a fighter to be prepared for anything that an opponent could possibly throw.

    Defense

They say the best offense is a good defense, and nothing could be truer in UFC 2009 Undisputed. While it may be possible to beat inexperienced fighters through sheer force of will and a strong offense, it will quickly become apparent that against the best of the best, defense is just as important.

Much like in real life, fighters can block shots to the face, body or legs by covering up, but it is important to understand that in UFC 2009 Undisputed, blocking isn't the perfect solution in all cases! Blocking simply mitigates a portion of damage based on factors such as the type and force of the attack and each fighter's Attribute and Fight Skill Ratings. However, it is possible to punch or kick through a fighter's guard and still score a knockout!

While riskier than simply going into a defensive shell, attempting to Counter an opponent's strike or takedown attempts can reap tremendous reward. Countering a strike will nullify all damage and place the fighter into an advantaged position. In some cases, countering an attack can instantly lead to a submission attempt or take the opponent to the ground. A successful counter is much more advantageous than a successful block, but a failed counter means eating whatever attack was levied!

To become a well-rounded stand-up fighter in UFC 2009 Undisputed, a player will need to have a powerful, varied Offense; an iron clad Defense; and the knowledge to understand from what Range to utilize the best aspects of both!

Trophies and achievements for PS3/Xbox 360?
    Definitely!

    Combat

Flying arm bars in the game?
    Yep!

How many ways can a fight be stopped? After a serious punishment, can you just collapse from a light punch?
Fights can be ended through knockouts, by tapping out due to submission or by TKO through an accumulation of damage. Much like a real UFC bout, any time a fighter is unable to defend himself, the fight will be stopped.

Only strikes of a certain power level can cause a knockout. For instance, a jab, no matter how cleanly landed, is generally not enough to knock out an opponent, but it definitely contributes to the cumulative damage that a fighter is able ot absorb and can set up a hook or head kick to end the fight in a brutal fashion.

Will there be special fighting styles for specific fighters, Silva?
Not complete fighting styles per se, but specific fighters will definitely have supplemental strikes, submissions, slams, transitions or counters that are unique to them. Anderson Silva, for example, has the unique ability to catch a punch and immediately pull an opponent into his Muay Thai clinch!"

The last few were just yesterday so I know they weren't posted.

"We wanted to let you know about a cool opportunity to add two exclusive fighters to your Undisputed Roster. Video game retailer, Gamestop, announced today that if you preorder or buy your game either online or in a store, you'll recieve a code for downloading The Ultimate Fighter champions Ryan Bader & Efrain Escudero."

So you're screwed if you don't have a Gamestop as usual and can't get stuff that's probably already on the disc.
