While many MMA fans and insiders would consider Lyoto Machida the most elusive fighter in Mixed Martial Arts, FightMetric uses statistical analysis to prove that he’s actually the second most elusive(of the list they’ve assembled) mixed martial arts fighter. The stats below comes from the number of strikes a fighter takes divided by the number of minutes fought to give you the number of strikes absorbed per minute of fighting(SApM). Here’s the list:

Frank Mir: 2.7 SApM
Rashad Evans: 1.39 SApM
BJ Penn: 1.23 SApM
Georges St. Pierre: 1.01 SApM
Anderson Silva: 0.71 SApM
Lyoto Machida: 0.64 SApM
Fedor Emelianenko: 0.59 SApM

As you can see Fedor Emelianenko has the lowest SApM with Machida coming in second. Take from this what you will, but these two fighters are very hard to hit.

Misleading numbers. Fedor is 'elusive' because he is usually in control and all over you. Machida is elusive because he actually stays away from the strikes.

They are misleading. It should take into account the strikes thrown at a fighter. Not just strikes landed per minute.

They are misleading. It should take into account the strikes thrown at a fighter. Not just strikes landed per minute.

machida usually out strikes his opponents. there is a huge misconseption that machida runs. he gets in and out of range better than anyone, and seems really difficuly to time because of his awkward stance, being lefty, and his speed and reaction time. he dispite being a reach disadvantage, can find ways to strike from the outside.

I am the biggest fan of Fedor out there, but one thing Machida has over Fecor is he has never been rocked. That is an amazing statistic IMHO. Than again he hasnt competed as much as Fedor yet.

Arlovski seemed to be able to hit him a lot before the flying knee attempt. Replace fedor w/ machida and machida wouldn't get hit as much.
