Tyson's main attribute was the speed at which he delivered his punches which I'll concede would put him a step above most strikers in the UFC however, the fact that all he would have is his strikes a competent grappler would be able to counteract his power.

And anybody who tries to tell me that UFC in particular is like a Street Fight needs to look no further to how bad Kimbo Slice was exposed by a rather average mixed martial artist.

who knows - he never trained in wrestling or anything other than boxing. All the power in the world means nothing if you can't stop a person from taking you down and beating your ***. Who really knows if he would have been any good at wrestling at all - being a great boxer doesn't make you a great anything else.

Why the comparisons to Kimbo Slice? That's like comparing Kobe to a AND 1 player.

The part I highlighted is where you are wrong. Tyson loved close combat and was strong enough to have the same kind of knock out power close as he did with a reach. If you watch Tyson you would see that he would take away the reach of his opponent and would get close by design and his close strikes where knock out punches. His uppercuts have lifted men off the ground. I would think if you tried and grapple Tyson you would be in a world of hurt very soon.

What about devastating leg kicks? Would he be able to defend against them?

Forest Griffin wore out Quentin "Rampage" Jacksons' legs when he took the title away, chopped him down. Took his power away with those kicks, not to mention the fear to engage with punches.

Take out Mike's legs and you take his power away.

its definitely an interesting debate... i'm not saying one way or another how he would do, as it really is impossible to know

but to those ppl who just write him off, I think that is absolutely ridiculous... if he had gotten some proper training when he was younger and actually gone that route, who knows what he could have done, thats the fun of the debate... from a physical speed/power standpoint alone, he is far and away in a class of his own... so w/ the proper training, idk... maybe he would have been great, maybe he woudlnt have been that bad, but like i said before, just writing him off and saying he had no chance is stupid

Hold on...so now we're saying that if he go proper training when he was young...well that's not what the question was. He's a boxer.

Now of course if it was a Gracie that go a hold of Tyson instead of Cus D'Amato then you're talking a whole other ball of wax.

But as it stands no boxer has ever managed to do anything in MMA boxing is just too one dimensional.

Marcus Davis has made a good career for himself.

Even as just a boxer (never any MMA training whatsoever), I could see him being a very formidable opponent for anyone who steps in the ring with him. Fights typically start standing up, so unless you take him down, you're going to run into issues. Also, once down, he has the strength working for him. I'm sure he'd struggle on the ground a bit, but you'd have to get him there first. Who the hell would want to get close enough to Iron Mike to even try? This guy's 20% punch has enough power to knock the spit out of your mouth and send your mouthpiece flying 3 meters for an achievement. And that's with a boxing glove. Now add 80% and make it smaller gloves.

I don't think there's an MMA fighter who'd stand a chance in a straight up boxing match. Hell, I don't think there's many boxers that stand a chance against him in a straight up boxing match. We're talking about Tyson in his prime here. Straight up striking/boxing, there's not a man out there who's going to be favored over him. Certainly no MMA fighter's going to out-box Tyson. They may win, but it's certainly not going to be from straight up boxing with the dude. There's not an MMA fighter in the history of MMA that is half as good as Tyson when it comes to straight up boxing. That's why they're MMA fighters.

Marcus Davis prior to boxing also had a martial arts background and started MMA training long before his career started. I'm not saying that guys with boxing struggle, I'm saying BOXERS struggle.

We all know Tyson would come in doing what made him rich....and maybe he'd beat a few lower tier guys...but a top guy would bring him down.

Even with Tyson on his back in half guard the guy could knock you out. I don't think anyone would want to take him to the ground unless you had side control, north/south, or full mount. All other positions and you are just asking to get knocked out. Tyson wanted to get close to you, add in elbows that he could throw, and not many people would be able to stop him. Sure he could get beat by some technical ground guys, but only if they caught him or got his back. I think the best guys would be kick boxers as they could keep him away with the leg kicks. BJJ guys could get their body destroyed in the clinch. How many knees could they deliver vs. Tyson's punches to the body.
