Interesting. He could be a good fit because of his toughness and his outrageous and wild tactics. I can see him getting outclassed if they get him on the ground, but make no mistake, at that weight, there isn't a single MMA fighter that can punch with Mayorga. With those gloves, his overhand right (same one that KO'd Forrest) could get him some MMA wins.

I know Im digging up an old thread but did anyone watch the press conference for the fight between Mayorga and Din Thomas? Its somewhat hysterical, especially when Mayorga lights up a cigarette during the press conference and proceeds to blow smoke into Din's face.

I definitely thought he would go an easier route...huge props for going against a guy like Din for your first fight.

I'll watch. Funny shirt Din had on lol

Mayorga is a total loser as a man, but at least he fights like he's a bully.

I think Mayorga loses very very badly by the way.

Yea me too. Din will have some heavy hands from Mayorga fly by his head and choose to take it to the ground and completely out class Mayorga. Then Mayorga post press conference says that Din is a "Cat" for a better choice of words and was scared to stand and exchange with him.

First James Toney, now Mayorga, with rumors of Hatton. MMA is becoming the final destination for washed-up boxers.

Is this something MMA fans are noticing or celebrating?

Yea most true MMA fans know that even the most talented boxer will be outclassed in MMA because of the well roundedness that fighters need to have in this era.

Not only must they have good stand up, but they must know many little technical details in clinch, grapple, ground game, submission offense and defense, and just a ton of small details that takes years of training.

Unless of course theyre fighting Tim Sylvia, lol. Was it Ray Mercer that knocked Sylvia out because Sylvia has no ground game to speak of? I think it was some independant show and he showed up completely out of shape as well. Nice to see his loss to Fedor basically sent his career into a downward spiral.

If you consider Tim a mixed martial artist lol. I consider him a big *** human being who wants to fight. Outside of that it is clear to see Tim is far from the technician that fighters such as Machida, Fisher, Evans, GSP, Hardy, Rua, etc etc. These guys can do each aspect of the sport not only well but amazing.

We look at these guys as "so so" at times when they are fighting other amazing fighters. But you put these same guys against someone with lack of training in all areas such as them and their abilities start to show through much easier.

Kimbo vs Nelson is a great example. Same thing will happen to Mayorga.

This is the real issue that we've touch upon in other threads. Until talented boxers in their prime abandon the sport and cross-over to MMA, I don't think it hurts either sport.

I think pure boxers have the best chance in the lightweight division followed by heavyweights.

I've had mixed feelings about this trend though. I don't mind it, but at the same time if they're not good enough to compete in boxing anymore, usually the same is true for mma. Hatton and MAyorga are young enough imo, and have a good attack style plus "bullyness" that will translate well as well as 'drity boxing' ...hatton must lick his chops at the thought he's allowed to be dirty. So it will be interesting more so for hatton to see if he picks it up and does well.

It's stupid though for these boxers to think their foe will stand and bang with them...even if they say they will a la kimbo vs mercer. They have to realize before they even call dana that they need to train wrestling, jitzu, etc...ASAP.

There does seem to be a decent amount of them doing this though - whether it's for money or publicity or to prove something.

Really prove to me it is "incorrect"

So you telling me that boxers train ground game? Submission offense? submission defense? clinch offense? clinch defense? shoot defense? under hooks? how to roll out a kimura? How to prevent their head from getting caught in triangle?

This is just a VERY small taste of what is required knowledge to fight in MMA. I am sorry but YOU are incorrect to believe that boxers are trained enough to fight in MMA.

                              Boxing = Hands only
MMA = Hands, Legs, Knees, Elbows, Submissions, Slams, Ground game.

The ground game alone takes years and years of training.
