    MMA and ESPN: Why not?

For some reason, ESPN rarely takes MMA and UFC seriously, as if it's not a legitimate sporting interest. Why?

Isn't UFC broadcast on ESPN in the UK?

And also, wasn't Bellator on ESPN? And isn't ESPN debuting MMA Live very soon? And I'm pretty sure Cain's KO of Big Nog was on the top 10 countdown the night it happened.

Re: MMA and ESPN: Why not?

This thread was relevant 2 yrs ago not now. MMA Live is airing on ESPN 2 in May. They run highlights of every UFC PPV main event on Sportscenter the Sunday after an event. They interview UFC fighters on Sportscenter before most UFC events. ESPN.com's MMA section is one of the better ones around with Rossen's blog and the live blogs they run during events.

It is improving, no doubt, but the Herschel Walker gambit got more national coverage than some of the best recent UFC fights.

Thats because Hershel is a former NFL Pro Bowler and Heisman Trophy winner who was entering a new sport at 50. It has nothing to do with ESPN's respect for MMA. ESPN focuses on the casual sports fan and more casual sports fans know who Walker is than GSP.

Looking at this thread plus the other one you started about Dana White I'm just left scractching my head. I'm not sure I follow or agree with your beliefs on where UFC, Dana White, and MMA as a whole are right now. Plus, as others have mentioned, MMA is becoming way more prevelent on ESPN with Dana White being interviewed often, coverage of upcoming fights on Sportscenter, MMA Live coming soon, etc. I guess I just disagree with your assessment.

I haven't seen all the coverage you guys are talking about, but it sounds like it's about to go mainstream, which is fine by me. I know White recently ranted and raved about the persistent lack of coverage of UFC, and perhaps I fell for it - looks like I'm a sucker on this one.

I HATE how most of the anchors on SC always laugh at it and treat it like it is pro wrestling. The only one that recognizes it is the young dude who usually works with Hannah Storm. Josh Elliot I think is his name.

ESPN thinks it is human cockfighting, that is the attitude that is put forth by most of the "analysts/pundits" anyway. Irrespective, of their official stance.

I dont agree. I've seen Scott Van Pelt and Brian Kenny interview MMA stars with no issues and no attitude at all.

Yeah, forgot about those guys. Van Pelt is legit, and Kenny does Boxing so he has respect for combat sports. I am not talking about interviews, I am talking the snide comments when highlights of PPV's are shown on SC.
