Re: UFC 117 - Anderson Silva v. Chael Sonnen

I do think this breaks the mystique of Anderson Silva though. Everyone thought he was unhittable (no one landed punches on him before), but now people can see how he's vulnerable.

Yes, he didn't lose, he got the sub win, but don't you think that this is somewhat of a blueprint on how to dominate Silva now? Some quality wrestler is gonna take him out cause he can't stop it...Sonnen just wasn't careful enough and got caught, otherwise he'd have done it...

Prior to this fight Silva was some mythical fighter who you couldn't even think was beatable. Now I personally think it'll happen. IMO he's not on the GSP level anymore where I've got no idea who can beat him.

That is a really OLD blue print really. Everybody has always known to beat Anderson you had to take it to the ground. Hendo tried, Nate tried, Maia tried. The key to it is not to get caught trying to take him down.

Far as GSP......out box him. If you can survive his leg kicks and all that, you can beat GSP IF you have KO power and land a good shot on him.

Anderson got $120,000 in bonus money. 60k for fight of the night and 60k for sub of the night.

ALSO......there aren't that many high quality wrestlers in the UFC. And far as middleweight division is concerned, Sonnen is the best wrestler in that division, nobody else comes close.

Far as quality wrestlers over all in the UFC........no particular order

            1. Brock - heavyweight
            2. Cain - heavyweight
            3. Hughes - welterweight
            4. Fitch - welterweight
            5. Sonnen - middle weight
            6. Koshcheck - welterweight
            7. GSP - welterweight
            8. Edgar - lightweight
            9. Tysonn Griffin - lightweight
            10. Jon Jones - light heavyweight

That was one crazy *** finish to a fight. He took some HUGE shots, and then he connected and turn out that other dudes lights. Those follow up shots when he got that dude on the ground were brutal.

Anderson's mystique has definitely been waning somewhat recently. It sucks but what can you do, Sonnen was like a perfect match style wise. I really doubt anyone in the division can do much against Silva.

Outside of Sonnen nobody has remotely challenged.

Same thing happened in the Filho fights. In the second fight Sonnen took him down and then quickly got back up. He didn't stay in the guard long at all like he did in the 1st fight. He looked to stand up more and just took him down for points.

And I believe Sonnen will do the same thing with Anderson in the rematch. Take him down for points but not stay there.
Umm yes I do think Sonnen would want to stay on the ground with Anderson again.

He had the fight won and had the damn belt around his waist. Like others said, if he simply would have laid a bit more and not been as active Anderson's streak would be no more.

In a rematch I'd expect Anderson to move around a ton more on his feet and I'd expect Sonnen to continue to stalk him but not keep himself as open once on top of Silva.

I dunno if that was a blueprint to dominate Silva or a blueprint to get subbed by a BJJ black belt.

How can you say that there aren't that many high quality wrestlers in the UFC?

Like, wrestling is the most dominant base in MMA. There aren't that many great, high level strikers in the UFC, but not that many great wrestlers?

Just off the top of my head, you forgot:

                          Randy Couture
                          Shane Carwin
                          Rashad Evans
                          Gray Maynard
                          Clay Guida
                          Mark Munoz
                          Yushin Okami
                          Ryan Bader

And I'm sure there's a lot more guys who are very good at wrestling. Guys like Vladdy, Hamill, etc..

You're right though, that Chael is the best wrestler in the MW division. But lack of high quality wrestlers? Definitely not.
