So Ummm... Jake Shields Was Released...

This news is almost a week old and I notice that there isn't a topic about it. So...

The 31-year-old Shields had been in a final-phase "matching period" of his recently completed contract with the San Jose, Calif.-based promotion, which allowed him to receive bids from other organizations, including the UFC, that Strikeforce could review and match in order to keep his services. However, the source said Strikeforce waived that contractual right in its final 2-3 weeks and opted to release the Cesar Gracie fighter altogether before the period expired.

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker confirmed to Sherdog.com that the promotion informed Jack Shields, the fighter's manager and father, of the release on Wednesday. Coker would not comment further on the decision.

"In the conversation we had today, they said they felt that Jake was leaning towards the UFC. Honestly, we were talking to them with an open mind, though Jake wants to fight the best," said the elder Shields. "Between Strikeforce and EliteXC, Jake had the chance to fight on Showtime and CBS four or five times against some top fighters like Dan Henderson and Robbie Lawler. Strikeforce gave him great opportunities and exposure. They've been nothing but great for Jake."
I'm pretty excited about Shields going to the UFC, still would have liked to see him fight Jacare, but oh well.

Also I would have liked to see him move back down to WW, apparently he wants to remain a MW.

They know they wouldnt be able to match the UFC's offer, but with him wanting to fight Anderson Silva, i just dont see that happening. Anderson first gets to destroy Chael "Big Mouth" Sonnen then a fight with Vitor Belfort. Unless he wants to wait over a year to fight its not ging to happen

Shields is gonna get smacked in the MW division. Even if he moved back down to WW, he would get smacked in that division too.

I don't think Anderson will be fighting for much longer, so this might be Shields division once he retires.

I don't know about that. Maia would beat him on the ground and I think there are a bunch of other guys that could beat him too.

Well Shields stand up is nothing to write home about either. If those guys fight I don't see any way for them to avoid going to ground and when they do, I don't care how good you are, they're in Maia's world. I mean yeah the middleweight division is pretty thin, but it's not so thin that a guy like Shields would be able dominate it. His signature win was a fight in which he got his *** kicked for the first two rounds, secured the mount (multiple times) on a gassed/aging fighter and was still unable to finish him. I'm not saying the guy's not good, but he's not UFC titleholder material.

I wouldnt say hesnot UFC titleholder material, but Anderson Silva would knock him out too. Hendo has heavy hands and the same could be said for him. He had shields rocked and couldnt finish him. Granted Maia is the best mw bjjer in the UFC (possibly the world), but Anderson Silva has very underrated bjj. He submitted Travis Lutter and Dan Henderson, which isnt easy feats.

See that's what I'm saying. A guy like Anderson Silva who isn't know for his BJJ submitted Hendo. And not talking bad about Silva's ground game, I recognize it's the most underrated part of his game, but when a guy who's supposed to be an elite fighter on the ground couldn't submit Hendo, despite being in dominant positions on a gassed opponent, that makes me question his skills. I just don't know how good his ground game will be against UFC guys. Cause let's face it, Strikeforce is absolute trash when it comes to depth.

It is. They have 1 or 2 fighters in every division thats good. It does make me question his game also, but i think he would be top 6 or 7 mw. Even though i like watching Strikeforce, they do lack in depth to bad. I do love it on Sherdog now that everyone says Alistar Overeem, or Ubereem as they call him would KO lesnar, and beforehand that Fedor would. A fighter the UFC cut just upset the best heavyweight of all time but that can happen in anyfight. Scott Coker can't honestly believe he can keep up with the UFC. I think Bellator is better than Strikeforce.

Oh I think he would definitely be top 6 at middleweight, right behind Silva, Marquardt, Sonnen, Maia and Belfort. Not sure about Bellator being better than Strikeforce though. Maybe depth-wise, but as far as star power they have two guys in Alvarez and Huerta, whereas in SF you have Fedor, Overeem, Arlovski, Hendo, Diaz, Le and Miller just to name a few. But then again, Bellator realizes they don't have top-level talent and they don't try to market themselves as such. They just put together good fights and have the fun-to-watch tournaments. I definitely prefer Bellator to Strikeforce but as far as saying which one is better talent-wise I might have to go with SF.

Shields is not getting near enough respect in this topic. I definitely consider him a top 10 P4P fighter. Very good pick-up for the UFC.

Agreed! People can say what they want to, but from the 2nd round on, he dominated a fight with Dan Henderson that most people expected him to lose quite handily.

Your right, they are smart with their promotions. But i think Hector Lombard would be in the top 2 or 3 mws in the UFC. I hope once Sonnen is destroyed, he wont be smack talking so much

Im not saying that at all. He took Hendo down, who is a great wrestler, but he couldnt finish him after getting mount a lot.
