Why Doesn't Mark Wahlberg like MMA?

What's up with Mark Wahlberg not liking MMA? I understand his love of boxing, blah blah, but why not like MMA?

This is from an interview he gave about his last movie:

"I love that Manny is such a sweet, humble guy. I love that Floyd talks trash and has never been beaten, or even really tested. I know both well. The sport needs that fight. Boxing really needs it. Too much M.M.A."

I think the thought of that fight is better for boxing than the fight itself. Right now there are two boxers on the planet people actually care about. After that fight there will only be one knowing how fickle fight fans are.

Yeah, he just wants to see that fight happen for the benefit of boxing. I like both sports myself, but I would much rather see boxing. It doesn't mean that I hate MMA.

I, too, would like to see more boxing. I'm a martial arts enthusiast, I like to watch MMA from time to time and I completely understand the nature of the sport as well as all the technique and hard work involved. However, I'm a striking purist. I love and practice Muay Thai, I appreciate Boxing, and I'm fascinated by kickboxing competitions like K-1. More boxing would make me a slightly happier person.

I don't think he was ragging on MMA really. He might not like the sport, but I don't think that was the gist of the quote.

I think he's simply saying that boxing isn't getting nearly the pub that MMA does (and for good reason).

And if he's more of a fan of boxing, then of course he wants boxing to become more relevant.
