There is no shortage of legit opponents for Anderson.

Out of Weidman, Belcher, Bisping, Stann and Lombard, how can anyone really say one of those guys deserves a shot over the other?

There will definitely have to be one more fight for a #1 contender's spot, which Weidman is already 1/2 of that equation.

The other half is anyone's best guess.

      Let me try:

Bisping is out because he is coming off of a loss.
Lombard is out because he will only have one UFC win if he beats Boestch.
Stann's biggest win is still over Chris Leben so he's out.

It comes down to Belcher and Weidman. Belcher should have 7 straight wins (He beat Akiyama at 100 but was robbed) but his biggest win is over Palhares.

Wideman has 5 straight wins and two over top 10 guys (Maia and Munoz). So its comes down to do you take the guy with the bigger wins or the guy with more wins.

        Great points

MMAfighting came up with a point though about Lombard-- in that Dana and company spent a pretty penny to bring him in. He's already 34 so couple that with the amount of dough they dished out, can they afford to have him take 2 UFC fights risking a loss? I would say he needs at least 2 fights before a title shot, maybe have him fight Bisping or Stann if he can get past Boestch.

If it comes down to Weidman and Belcher, it only makes perfect sense for them to duel it out and let Anderson rest up. I don't think putting either of them directly in front of Anderson at this point is logical nor productive. Hopefully they can build both of these guys up before that.

Good Points. Regarding Lombard, the UFC doesnt really work that way. Either you can hang or you cant. Keep in mind UFC contracts arent guaranteed. So if he loses to Boetsch or the second person he fights, they can either ask to renegotiate or cut him without losing any long term money. I just dont feel right about giving a guy a title shot when his biggest win is over Brian Ebersole.

Regarding letting Anderson rest, that makes sense. After Sept, there are only 3 PPVs left. 153 will probably be Aldo/Koch. 154 will be GSP/Condit. 155 could be another LW title fight or another Jones fight. Thats why this is the perfect time for Jones/Silva.

Re: UFC on Fuel 4 - Weidman v. Munoz- July 11

Just watched this event via DVR:

Te Huna & Beltran was an entertaining scrap. Props to The Mexicutioner for getting in good shape, and dropping down to 205.

Wow. I knew Weidman had some skills, but I didn't know he was THAT good. He thoroughly dominated Munoz on the mat... made him look like an amateur. A couple different times I thought Mark was ready to tap out. Weidman would not let him breathe for one second down there. I knew once Munoz was back on the feet, he was gonna go Donkey Kong crazy. Needed something big to happen for him, and there was no way in hell he wanted more of that ground game.

That elbow was just filthy & perfectly timed! Mark was out before he face-planted into the canvas... how did Rosenthal not recognize that? Props to Weidman for fighting until the ref stepped in, but Munoz took FAR TOO MANY unnecessary shots. Brutal.

As I read the above posts... I love the idea of a Belcher vs. Weidman showdown. Both are very versatile, skilled fighters and would be awesome to see.

We'll see where the UFC & Joe Silva go moving forward.
            Chicks dig the long ball.

I think the next opponent for Anderson Silva is going to be Weidman since he already beat legitimate opponents in Maia and Munoz. His next opponent shouldn't be Lombard because he hasn't even fought in a match yet in the UFC

And rightfully so. Jesus Christ, Weidman should take notes from Damien Maia. Even if the ref has his head up his ***, you can stop punching. This kinda thing raises the question; should there be a limit to how many times the UFC allows a fighter to be knocked out? This makes two for Munoz, both in pretty brutal fashion.

I think it's more on the refs than the fighters. It's tough to expect a guy to stop punching, how many great comebacks have we had just this year alone?

I wish UFC could have their own full time refs and judges that they could train.

We as MMA fans need to calm down. Weidman is NOT ready for a fight with anderson silva. We need to be serious here. The guy is super talented and can be a real force in the division let's not shoot this guy up to fast.

1 month ago he wasn't even in the conversation, now becasue he brutalized mark munoz thats enough. I'd like to see him fight maybe one more time against a top 5 opponent. (i wish they could do a match between him and Bisping, i know Bisping is tied up and he's coming off a loss but its a great matchup)

as far as contedors there are some guys you could argue for but, if Lombard wins in any fashion other than a split decision it's his title shot to take.

after that its wide open and really theres no clear cut leader at the moment

Could be Bisping too. He fights Stann in Sept. so he could fight Silva in December if possible.

Vitor Belfort wants to fight Chris Weidman or the Boetch-Lombard winner.
