He has a 14-1 record and only loss is to justin gaethjie. His grappling seems great and seems like he has enough striking to survive for the takedown. How far do you think he can go??

It's a great story. He can't beat UFC talent with time to gameplan. Stop his takedown and the fight is over. He has 0 high defense on his 1 side, so attack that.
Justin took it easy on him because he wasn't going down and Justin didn't want to continue to brutalize him. Unless CM Punk or similar fighter is going to fight him, it won't be pretty.

Re: Nick Newell Highlights (Will he make the UFC)
Shaking my head
Alex Munoz.
Alex looks the part, but has not really fought a high caliber opponent (but hey it's the contender series, not the major leagues). His last win was a split dec (his first) over Ubirajara (4-2). But down here a lot of these guys are fighting debut or loosing streak fighters.
Not that any of this is Alex's fault, the man is 4-0. (but has not fought since 2016).
Also, Alex Munoz is a wrestling based fighter, and Nick Newell is a BJJ black belt. one of his go-to is locking up his stub, that might be something Munoz has little idea how to fight against, and he does not have a veteran savvy. I can see Munoz trying some ground and pound, only to be locked in a guillotine to where he can't grab the lock.
Here's most of fight, so people can judge for themselves.
I'm sure none of the 14 able men have tried to attack his side.
If anything Nick is vulnerable to uppercuts.
Ah, come on, now we're getting all conspiracy theory here.
Justin "taking it easy"
Urg, the laziness I see sometimes on this forum. come on people!
Nick has an interesting style. he's Southpaw, but probably not a natural southpaw, i do believe Luke Rockhold is the same? that means his power is in his left hook and not his right hook (or elbow in Nick's case). But for Nick a lot of fighters wanna attack his weak side, which is further away.
you see Justin going for the "weak side" several times at the start, only to be punished by it. it's when he starts mixing it up he has more success.
ROUND 1
After some trademark legkicks, Justin ducks into clinch and tests the weak side of Nick. Notice Nick trying to pay him on the way out.
Justin again trying to clinch, right hook Nick on his "weak side"
Two more attempts at Nick's weak side, now Nick's making Justin pay for them.
Justin going back to the legkicks, but Nick's making him pay for that too. Misses with that knee, but Justin has no issues with a little inside-boxing.
Here's where things start getting real interesting. After sprawling at several TD attempts, Justin keeps the pressure up, and keeps pushing the pace. But notice, his 2 right hooks don't really connect, his left ones however do. That's the magic sauce in fighting southpaws (no it's not a secret) and Justin's getting wise to it.
Nick is clearly a bit rocked. Notice Justin: a slightly off timed right hook-feint that turns into a down the middle straight. followed up by a shovel punch
There is though an issue with Nick's "weak side". Justin's now finding a home with a looping right hook to the back of the head. Justin gets another sweet left in (actually these had more success than Justin must have realised). Notice the right uppercut instead of another hail mary right hook.
also notice: Nick's got a chin.
ROUND 2
Looks like NBC plays the corner talk while the new round is going. so ignore the corner.
Look, Justin again with that looping right to the back of the head. Also that left is finding a home again, That's how you get Nick, that left. (or switch stances on him). You see Justin wants to follow up with another uppercut/shovel punch
If i were to coach you against Nick we would train plenty of clinch right body uppercuts....
Like John Kavanagh said, if someone puts their hands behind their back and their chin out, don't punch them in the face, punch them in the gut. also note a weak Hail Mary to the iron chin of Justin.
Working that body, uppercuts. At this point Nick's just in survival mode.
Finishing blow. Notice the right hook actually ends up coming straight down the middle.
Nick Newell reminds me a little bit of Dominick Cruz. I think Cruz was a hard nut to crack, and that meant he had a lot of benefits. You won't really find any sparring partners like him. But I do think the longer Nick Newell fight, the easier it will become to crack his weird style. Also the man has fought once in 3 years. If he is UFC calibre remains to be seen, but he performed admirably against a world elite fighter, so any "he's just a 1 armed handicapped fighter" is so lazy it's tiresome.
If you want to defeat Nick Newell, you do it with Sprawls, Switch stances, Left hooks, right body uppercuts, and don't buy his smoke screen "weak side".Last edited by MacGowan; 07-22-2018, 10:57 PM.Comment

Oh, and I'm adding a short and pretty good, nuanced video about it here:

Re: Nick Newell Highlights (Will he make the UFC)
I'll be rooting for Nick because he likes Nintendo 64 and cats. It's probably not right, but if I was pro fighter I probably wouldn't accept fight against him.
IIRC and the fighters can be believed Rockhold is right handed, fights southpaw and he skates and surfs goofy. (I skate and snowboard goofy) Bisping also said he's left handed, but as we know he fights orthodox.Comment

Re: Nick Newell Highlights (Will he make the UFC)
Nick showed his heart, but in the end he just isn't talented enough to overcome his disability. He is great on the regional circuit and I do wish there was a way to get him a UFC fight. You would think Dana would want the ratings boost from putting him on the prelims. Maybe FP subs will increase enough for them to do 1 fight.
Let him beat the guy who beat CM Punk. He could probably take out some of the local fighters that the UFC uses for foreign cards.
He just can't beat the top 20 or so fighters.

Re: Nick Newell Highlights (Will he make the UFC)
Nick Newell is a talented fighter, but I really didn't want to see him in the UFC. It's all good when he's beating up on average fighters, but there are too many wolves in that organization. It just would've been a bad look to see him getting smashed up by someone.
I'm all about giving people chances and I respect what he's trying to do, but other than good PR for 15 minutes, there aren't a lot of great reasons for the UFC to sign him. It's not like he's a Jon Jones level talent, or something like that. I think the Contenders shot was a good way to go about it.Comment
