Remember the Times: when did you first watch wrestling?

Ok so I blatantly stole the concept from graphik "pays the royalties"

Anywho when did you guys first start watching wrestling? When did you fully understand the product and realize it was "fake"? Who's your favourite all time wrestlers? Are you tape traders/buyers/sellers? Do you have interest in wrestling before your time?

I'll answer my questions if this thread gets at least 3 replies.

Re: Remember the Times: when did you first watch wrestling?

It's fake?!!?!? WHAT?! I don't care what anyone says, it's real! They made my life great...

    Anyway, back to seriousness.

When I was like 5 years old, My Mom was into it. I fully got it around 9 or so. Maybe a little older.

I don't have a favorite all time, if I had to choose, it would be Bret Hart. I always liked Hall and Nash too.

My addiction as a kid was WCCW (World Class Championship Wrestling). Used to be on ESPN at 4PM so it would be on when I got home. I liked it because they had title changes and angles on TV, where WWF at the time only had their Superstars show where it was a bunch of squashes. And my cable company didn't offer PPV's at the time. So it would be 2 months until the tape would come out for me to see a WWF PPV. And there was no Internet, so I never had any clue what happened.

But WCCW, with the Von Erich's, Freebirds, Iceman Parsons, Chris Adams, Gino Hernandez, Steve Austin, Great Muta, Brusier Brody, Eric Embry, etc was the wrestling I loved as a kid.

I still remember vividly the match with USWA champ Jerry Lawler vs. WCCW Champ Kerry Von Erich to unify the belts. Bloody mess.

wow - i cant remember when I first started.. if I had to guess it would have to be in the mid 80's.. obviously you can tell who my fav wrestler was back then.. i can also remember watching the Sat morning shows that were, as I look back on it now, bad.. they would have a guy like JYD taking on Joe Shmoe.. the worst thing was that I would always want the "jobber" to win.. other fav's back then were Demolition, Ricky Steamboat, & the "birdman" Koko B. Ware... & i miss hearing Gorilla Monsoon calling the action

& i can remember the trail that took place in the 80's (i think it was about steriods & the fact that it was "fake" was brought out).. the courthouse where it was held was just down the block from where i lived at the time..

I dont remember I was so young, I've gotten away from it for the past like oh 8 years but before that I was a huge fan. I think it was when Demolition were still a tag team with Crush that I first got into it bc they were my fav.

I started watching it around 1997, when there was DX, Vince McMahon's group and the Undertakers group. My favorite wrestler all-time is Kane when he had the mask. My favorite tag team all-time is/was Kane and X-Pac.

Re: Remember the Times: when did you first watch wrestling?

Anywho when did you guys first start watching wrestling?

I remember when my pops took me to the what was then, the Rosemont Horizon and we watched Wrestlemania on some big screen with a crowd full of ppl. It was the Wrestlemania that had Mr. T in it so I cant remeber which one. Thats my earliest memory of wrestling.

When did you fully understand the product and realize it was "fake"?

Dont laugh when I say this but I did'nt realize it was fake until that masked dude did that show showing all the techniques used to show how fake the sport was. I knew for the most part that the storylines were fake since you can see 2 guys hate eachother one month and be a tag team the next...but I thought the wrestling aspect was real. The blood and everything. Had no idea that they cut themselves, do moves in a special kind of way so the guy does'nt get hurt, smack their chest to simulate the punch sound during a punch, throw their hands up during a chair shot, saw a table in half before its used as a prop and the biggest thing to me was that the wrestlers talk to eachother during the match to plan out the spots.

That show pretty much changed the way I watched wrestling. Cant remember when it aired. Sometime during the late 90s I think. After I saw it, I started noticed all of those techniques. For some odd reason, it actually made the show more enjoyable. You dont look at wrestling as some type of boxing match were two guys slug it out to the finish, it completely turns you into a....what do you guys call yourselfs...."smarks" or "marks". You try to predict every outcome and how every storyline will end.

Who's your favourite all time wrestlers?

Cant lie man, Hulk was "it" back in the day. He single handedly made wrestling what it is today. He was pretty much the cover boy for wrestling. A Micheal Jordan of sorts. He's pretty much the reason why WCW became hot during the Attitude/NWO era and it had me switching channels back and forth for a few years. Everyone knew how a Hulk match would end. You always looked foward to it.

            Other wrestlers include:
Macho Man Randy Savage-him and Hulk had history from the WWF to WCW.
Bret Hart and the Hart Foundation-one of the first real cliques I ever really known...besides the 4 Horsemen of course but I did'nt watch WCW back in the day.
Undertaker-he's right up there with Hulk Hogan. I've followed him since he first came in. To his historical matches against Kane and the look-a-like Undertake to his cage matches against Mankind. Cant wait till he has a DVD set out.
Scott hall and Kevin Nash aka Razor Ramon and Diesel aka The Outsiders.
All of NWO--my favorite clan of all time. I loved everything about them. Seemed like the recruited member every week.
Diamond Dallas Page--something about his personality I used to love. I always thought he sniffed a 8 ball and went out to wrestle.

            Are you tape traders/buyers/sellers?

Cant say that I am. I'm still waiting on WWE 24/7 I envy you Sportsman!!

Do you have interest in wrestling before your time?

Not really. From what I seen of the old school federations, they were pretty basic back then. WWF was pretty much my starting point and I'm sure alot of other ppls starting point. First fed to sell out stadiums from what I can recall.

i'd watch the recap shows on weekend mornings cause nothing else was on, and i got hooked...I knew it was fake, but didn't really "understand the product" until I started looking online, and reading stuff there. Like Graphik said, it adds a fun element when you're a "smark", I prefer that over being oblivious to what's going on. I notice missed spots more, a lot more detail than I used to.

Favorite wrestler is HBK, but also liked Bret Hart a lot. Also, I was a big Razor Ramon fan too, love the ladder matches he had with HBK.

Not a tape trader, though I'll occasionally buy the DVD sets of some wrestlers if I like them enough.

I like looking back at the wrestling I liked as a kid, totally different era, but I can't really go much past the mid 80's, at some point it just looks cheesy and not really as entertaining.

Re: Remember the Times: when did you first watch wrestling?

I don't quite remember when it was but it was a long time ago. I used to watch it on sundays. I think it was Nwa. It had Bulldog Bob Brown, Harley Race. Bulldog and Race were the oldest of the wrestlers. I guess it was early to mid 80's.

My favorite promotion was the UWF. Jim Ross was the announcer. Steve Williams, ONe man Gang, Jim Duggan, Sting. Man what happened to that show.

I got into the wwf when Hogan was fueding with Big John Studd(RIP). I was hooked for a long time, no one could tell me it was fake.

After that like most everyone I took a break from wrestling and got pulled back in when the wcw came into effect. Man the Outsiders and the NWO was great back then.

My fav wrestler when I was a kid was Marty Jannety, then Hogan. Favorite team was the Outsiders. Favorite group was the NWO.

Here is a question for you: Who was Ox Baker and what was his finisher? Don't look it up, I just want to see who knows it off the top of their head.

Re: Remember the Times: when did you first watch wrestling?

89 is when I started.... My favorites have changed as time has gone on, at one point it was Hogan, then Ultimate Warrior, then Tatanka, then Mr. Perfect, then I got into WCW big time and I was a crazy mark for guys like Goldberg, Glacier, Sting, NWO Wolfpack.... then sometime around 98 or 99 when Austin, Rocky, Nation of Domination started I stopped watching WCW as much to the point where by the end I would mostly watch WWF. My favorite wrestler of all time is The Rock, but I also had favorites like Ken Shamrock, pretty much anyone from the Corporation, and I loved the Brood (Gangrel has one of the great all time entrances IMO)

I've recently gotten into TNA since when they first moved to Fox Sports on Fridays, it's a cool product, a little too spot driven wrestling for my taste but certain guys I love, Christian is one of my favorites right now, but I also like guys like Petey Williams, and Samoa Joe...

My top 5 guys right now (based on my opinion...)

                  1. Trevor Murdoch (this man is a genius... with the new WWE drug policy he will go far while others shrink into the background)
                  2. Christian (I'm a peep)
                  3. Shelton Benjamin (just love his ring work) (minus the mandatory blown spot per match)
                  4. The Boogeyman (so damn entertaining)
                  5. Petey Williams (Canadian Destroyer roxxxs! lol)

Re: Remember the Times: when did you first watch wrestling?

A friend introduced me to wrestling back in 1996; at the time the WWF was building up the Iron Man match between Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart. I didn't actually get to watch that match, but following Wrestlemania XII my brother and I started watching wrestling pretty regularly.

I really don't remember when I realize it was fake, but it was probably around the same time that my brother, myself, and a few friends started a wrestling league of our own in my basement. We bought all the title belts, had entrances, had storylines, everything (well, except for a real ring, ropes, pyros, and so forth, heh).

As for my favorite guys, I've always cheered for the Undertaker and Bret Hart. I started liking Stone Cold around the same time everyone else did, as with The Rock. My bro and I also always cheer on the jobbers, even though we know they have no chance at winning (e.g. Barry Horowitz, the Brooklyn Brawler, anyone that faces Triple H). Really the only guy in there now that I like is Shelton Benjamin. John Cena at times can be good, but sometimes he seems too predictable. And a bunch of these new guys I hear you all talk about, I've never seen (Murdoch, for example).

I personally don't do any of the tape trading or buy wrestling stuff, but my brother has a couple Shawn Michaels' DVD sets (HBK is his all-time favorite, followed by Diesel, Tazz, and Jeff Hardy) and one or two pay-per-view VHS's.

I have interest in wrestling before my time, to a certain extent. The oldest match I've ever watched is the 1991 Survivor Series bout between Undertaker and Hulk Hogan, which was pretty good.

When did you guys first start watching wrestling?

Probably around 1984 when Hogan was fueding with the Iron Sheik. Used to get up on Saturday mornings and watch Superstars of Wrestling with "Mean" Gene Okerlund. And, I remember staying over at my cousin's house and being up late to watch Saturday Night's Main Event. I also remember watching the old NWA telecasts with Rick Flair, The Midnight Express, The Road Warriors, 4 Horsemen, etc. Ah, those were the days.

When did you fully understand the product and realize it was "fake"?

I have no idea. Sometime in the 80's. It was years before I realized it or was told. I was probably middle school age.

Who's your favourite all time wrestlers?

Ricky Steamboat, Mr. Perfect, Bret Hart, and The Junk Yard Dog.

                          Are you tape traders/buyers/sellers?

                          Nope.

Do you have interest in wrestling before your time?

Not really. Wrestling really became big when I was a kid so 1970's and earlier wrestling really doesn't interest me.

Well he's a flashback to the old days where wrestler size didn't matter, it was all about attitude, and Murdoch has that. He has great charisma as well, if you saw his backstage skit with Vince it was golden, "I'm your hucklebuck!" I like Murdoch because he can hold his own in the ring and he is the average man, well below average but that's what makes him so unique, and once again his charisma is through the roof.
