Dashwood, whose ring name is "Emma," appeared in community court Tuesday. She was told to do community service, according to her lawyer, Hubert Santos.

Santos said outside the courtroom that his client's arrest stemmed from a mistake. She was using the self-checkout machine at the Hartford Walmart when she bought about $30 of items but forgot to pay for a case for an iPod or iPad, he said.

As someone who doesn't use self-checkout because I've had trouble the handful of times I have used them, I can buy this story.

Don't know if I totally believe it without knowing the circumstances (did she not ring it up, or think it did and put into her bag, etc...) but that's stuff that we wouldn't know unless we saw security footage.

I can totally buy the story cause of the self checkout thing and well it just sounds silly for a person who probably makes a decent amount.

I don't get why they'd arrest someone over that though if it was a mistake.

She would have had to show intent for them to contact law enforcement and make the arrest. I used to work in Loss Prevention and if we thought it was a mistake (something left in cart, etc) we didn't apprehend.

Because every single person who gets caught stealing probably makes that excuse.

I have a colleague that had a toddler put bottle of sprinkles in her purse. Walked out and got arrested. Mistakes happen. She just dealt with it (after trying to pleade her case).

Whenever I worked in a grocery store, it didn't matter what happened, police were called immediately before any questions.

At our Target if the security thing goes off someone just yells "You're good" at the person.

And I haven't seen anyone actually dealt with for shoplifting.

So you can steal from our Target probably is the point I'm making.
