Lex Luger is broke, comments on Benoit......

Wrestling can leave lives on the ropes | ajc.com

Some of the article, great read, wrasslin' is in some deep doo doo.

"The pressures on wrestlers to perform night after night grew as the business got more lucrative as federations such as McMahon's WWE went international.

But as wrestling exploded in reach, smaller regional circuits that gave more wrestlers a living dried up.

Atlanta resident Gary Juster, a former wrestling promoter, said the old circuits needed wrestlers, men who added a shtick to their act, but were athletes first and foremost.

Then, about 25 years ago, the sport changed. "The look of a typical wrestler changed," Juster said. "It changed from wrestler to bodybuilder, that chiseled look. There wasn't as much passion for the craft."

As "The Look" became more important, steroids became more popular. "Guys did whatever they had to do to get ahead," Juster said.

The pressure increased as jobs became fewer and more lucrative, said former wrestler Rick Steiner."

Stuff we all knew but still nice to read.

I don't know whether to laugh or feel sorry for him.

Honestly? I feel sorry for him. I didn't used to. I used to think the guy was just a psychopath. But...I'm now starting to realize that maybe the wrestling business is to blame for how a lot of these guys are after their day in the spotlight is over. There's just way too many stories like this one out there for it all to be a coincidence.

I agree that the business is a mess and always has been, but who's fault is it really? They make their own choices in life. This is not a country that makes those decisions for you. God has given us free will whether we deserve it or not.

Every time they put that needle in the body, every time they snort that line, every time they pop that pill, they know it's not the right thing to do. WWE, Vince McMahon, the wrestling business in general are not the ones to blame for that. If they don't want that lifestyle, they can walk and get a real job.

Choices. We have to be man enough to admit when we make bad ones.

During his time in NWA and WCW, Lex Luger was one of my favorite wrestlers. I know many made fun of him the last few years in the industry saying that he couldn't wrestle, but he had some entertaining feuds/matches. It is a shame that he is broke, and I do to a degree feel sorry for him. I think some of these guys have all this money ahead of them in their careers and just don't invest it wisely. Instead their spending having a good time and not looking down the road.

I hope that Luger has cleaned himself up from the sounds of that article, I would hate to see another one of my favorites growing up pass away.

            May God be with Luger.

I feel sorry for him in the sense that he's basicly got nothing, but on the flip side, he's got life.

People might pass it off as just another guy who "found religion", but from what he says, he understands his priorities now. In the long run, wrestling messed him up, but he now has a chance to do something of more value.

I believe Luger. There seemed to be sincerity there. I wish him the best.

Well I never liked Luger as a person when I heard that he blew off disabled kids and people in wheelchairs when he was in his prime. That kinda blew the covers off his "good guy" image for most of his career.

That being said, maybe it was the drugs, steroids and all the pressures of life on the road that caused some of that behavior. I feel bad for him but at least he's got life which is a lot more than can be said for other wrestlers of his generation. I hope that life has humbled him and that God takes care of him as well.
