SvR 09: Legacy of No Mercy

Maybe this is a question that's been asked before, but I haven't seen it. Why is it, considering so many gamers have spoken up and elected, almost universally, that No Mercy as the best wrestling game (at least American-made, that is), that WWE-game developers continue to avoid reproducing the formula/engine? Am I crazy to think that a hearkening back to No Mercy -- as the new TNA game was rumored to be -- would sell and sell and sell? And, ultimately, leave the gamer satisfied?

Thing is, the No Mercy engine really isn't a good representation of american wrestling. Unfortunately, the Smackdown series is the most accurate representation of american wrestling that we have. It really saddens me that the majority of the world will never play the All Star Pro Wrestling series, because ASPW3 is far and above my favorite wrestling game of all time. Even greats like KOC2 and FPR don't come close to how much I like that game

The only (non-AKI-developed) WWE game series that ever really came close to the flow and gameplay of No Mercy was the Day of Reckoning games for Gamecube, which still are incredibly enjoyable games. Yes, SVR focuses in on the flash and theatrical nature of American pro wrestling, but I think what made No Mercy so successful is its mixture of realistic mechanics and fun. DOR gets close to that but, alas, isn't No Mercy. You'll have to take into account how much more customization No Mercy had. The game that came closest to that may have been Raw 2 for Xbox. If SVR had the ability to edit existing wrestlers' attire, who knows how much more mileage we could get out of it.

With that being said, if, let's say, AKI takes over development of the SVR series, there'd be a lot more faith in the series. It'd be interesting to see how they could build upon the No Mercy engine in an actual wrestling game (sorry, Def Jam Vendetta).

Yeah, i still think that the Day of recknoning series should have stayed, instead of the SVR series.

D16NJD16, I'm speaking ideally (as are most of the people on wishlists or speculation threads are). Of course THQ is out there to make money on their franchise...hell, look at the crap EA's put us through year after year with the "Madden Marketing Machine". That's how it is in this day and age.

So, IDEALLY, I'd prefer a fully-customizable WWE title released every two years (ala WM2000/No Mercy or the Fire Pro games) than a half-assed WWE title released every November. But everyone here knows that won't happen.
