    Bash at the Beach 2000

So, I'm watching this on WWE 24/7 this afternoon and it was quite interesting to say the least. I was a WCW fan when I was in high school around 1996-1998 but by 2000 I was a WWF fan and so I wasn't watching WCW.

Anyway, the whole show Jeff Jerratt keeps going to Ernest 'the cat' Miller (commissioner?) and asking him where Hollywood Hogan is. He does this a couple of times. So, then the Hogan and Jerratt match starts and Vince Russo comes down and starts yelling at Hogan. Then Jerratt lays down in the middle of the ring and throws the match. Hogan is pissed off about it but does the 'cocky' pin with his foot and the ref counts 1-2-3. Then Russo comes back out 10 minutes later and shoots on Hogan for playing politics and holding guys down and always having to have his way and playing his 'creative control' card whenever he wants. Then he makes a match for Jerratt to meet Booker T at the end of the night for the title and Booker T wins his first title.

So, I know someone around here knows the story. I'm pretty sure that stuff wasn't supposed to happen but I'd like to hear the inside story. Thanks in advance.

Re: Bash at the Beach 2000

    per Wiki:

    Bash at the Beach 2000
Russo was involved in a very controversial incident with Hulk Hogan; Hogan was booked to lose a match against reigning world champion Jeff Jarrett at Bash at the Beach 2000, but Hogan refused to lose the match (invoking his contract's "creative control" clause to override Russo), due to Russo's apparent lack of direction for Hogan's character following the planned loss. In the end, Jarrett literally "laid down" for Hogan, which resulted in Hogan doing a shoot on Russo and scoring the pinfall victory by placing his foot on Jarrett's chest. Russo would come out later in the broadcast to nullify the result of the match, as he publicly fired Hogan. This action restored the title to Jarrett, which set up a new title match between Jarrett and Booker T.

As Russo promised, Hogan never resurfaced in WCW and even filed a lawsuit against WCW (which was dismissed in 2002). Russo claims the whole thing was a work (with both Hogan and Bischoff in on the deal); Hogan claims (in his autobiography, Hollywood Hulk Hogan) that Russo made it a shoot, and Hogan was double-crossed by Turner executive Brad Siegel, who did not want to use Hogan any more due to how expensive Hogan cost per appearance; and Bischoff, in his autobiography, Controversy Creates Cash, contends that Hogan winning and leaving with the title was a work which would result in his return several months later - the plan was to crown a new champion at Halloween Havoc, only for Hogan to come out afterwards and ultimately win a champion vs. champion match - but that Russo's coming out to fire Hogan was a shoot which led to the lawsuit filed by Hogan. Bischoff claims that he and Hogan celebrated after the event over the success of the angle, but were distraught to get a phone call saying that Russo interfered unplanned after Hogan left the arena.

I read in Death of WCW that Russo and Hogan were attempting to put one over on the boys in the back with this. The only people in one it were Hogan and Russo. Jeff Jarrett wasn't even in on it. Sad thing is,it probably would have worked had Russo not cut that vicious promo on Hogan. Hogan felt double crossed and was legitimately pissed about it.

I don't know if it would've worked, because I have no idea what they were trying to do LOL. That whacky *** Russo. But yeah, that's pretty much what happened.

Kind of funny, too, how Booker and Jarrett were put over that night and to see at what they've become in TNA. Cyclical biz indeed...

Thanks for the info. Sounds like everyone has a different story so who knows. Either way, it made a boring PPV a bit interesting in the end.

And Goldberg was heel? And he fought against Nash who was face at the time? Who thought this would work?

Yeah I remember when the turned Goldberg, NOBODY cared. I think it happened at Great American Bash and I still think Goldberg got more cheers than Nash.

I suggest everyone read Death of WCW by Wrestlecrap's RD Reynolds. I know it was mention in this thread but yeah... definite read, shows you just how unbeliveably screwed up WCW was in it's fianl years, just a complete mess.

Then again WCW was a mess from it's very beginning.

I don't know why Russo thought that was a good idea to turn Goldberg heel. He was the only guy left in the company that the fans wanted to cheer.

"Then again WCW was a mess from it's very beginning."

The problem was the people running things didn't know a damn thing about how to run a wrestling show. They didn't actually start to make money until Bischoff came around and had it not been for the nWo angle they wouldn't have made any then.

Exactly. They had these ridiculous turnovers in managament all the time, new bookers, new everything. There was no consistency and there was no ONE leader. That's why the WWE has been so successful because it's ran like a small business. Everything goes through McMahon. In WCW the board of executives would see a drop in money or a drop in ratings and vote to have a new guy running it, it got to the point where an ex-Pizza Hut executive was the top guy in the company.

That would be Jim Herd. Guy was an idiot. He tried to get Ric Flair to shave his head, wear a nose ring and change his name to Spartacus. It was Flair's dislike of this guy that led to him showing up on WWE television with the WCW World title and calling himself the "Real"World's champion.

LOL are you serious? Who in their right mind would think that was a good idea?

Herd was running WCW when Kevin Nash was known as Oz. Shows just how bright he was.

Herd was a MORON. Absolute idiot.

His only experience with wrestling before running the number two company in the world was there was a syndicated wrestling show on his TV station about 10 years ago.

he once tried to come up with a tag team called The Hunchbacks (with the gimmick in which that they can't be pinned because their humps would prevent their shoulders from touching the mats)
                            ....

So he landed on the DING-DONGS. Anyone remember those guys? A tag team... with bells on their tights.

Yeah,Jim Herd was an idiot. Only thing that could be said about him was that he didn't institute those stupid rules that Bill Watts brought in. One of them was no moves from the top rope, which pretty much killed off the cruiserweight division quick fast and in a hurry.
