Out of Bounds: The Late, The Great, WWF No Mercy

Wrestling was pretty damn sweet back in my day. In fact, I like to think I grew up during the golden age of wrestling.

As a kid I was treated to the heroic Hulk Hogan, the Ultimate Warrior shaking the ropes, and Ted DiBiase and Ric Flair doing their best to advance their nefarious schemes. When I was a teenager, I had Stone Cold Steve Austin, the Rock, Chris Jericho and the awesome subterfuge of the New World Order. My friends and I watched every week of Nitro and Raw, and used money we did not have to order the pricey pay-per-views. When we went to school on Tuesday, the previous night's shows were the only thing anyone wanted to talk about. Honestly, it was pretty nice.

Of course, being a wrestling fan goes with video game fandom like peanut butter and chocolate. What is wrestling, after all, other than a live-action equivalent of fighting games and superhero tales? The only problem was this: there really were not any good wrestling games. Yes, you had Tecmo Wrestling, which was nominally cool, but after that, what? WCW Wrestling? Eh. It was terribly repetitive, as were all of the old WWF War Zone and Raw games. WWF Steel Cage Challenge (way back in 1992) had its moments, but if you're being honest with yourself, none of the titles were all that much fun to play.

I absolutely loved WM 2000 and No Mercy. In college, we played these games almost every evening. IIRC, the only issue No Mercy had was either some created wrestlers getting wiped or matches freezing. It didn't happen often though.

I do agree that these games seemed to really represent the pace of a match. While the SmackDown/SDvsRAW franchise has come a long ways, they still don't match up with WM 2000 & No Mercy IMO.

      Great walk down memory lane!

Yes, this was one of the best games ever... in college we would play this all night... battle royals, tag teams... etc etc.

In WM2000, you could create belts which added to the re playability... we would hold belts in the apartment and force people to have to fight their way up the ranks to get a shot at the title. Amazing.

I grew up in that time frame as well, Jared. Well played! I would watch one show and tape the other. Saddly, I went the route of the Playstation and didn't get a good wrestling game until Smackdown's debut. I do remember playing Wrestlemania 2000 and No Mercy and wow you're definitely reminding me of a fun youth with my friends. We would re-create the Monday cards and duel it out on Tuesdays after school. It was a blast!

I agree with cdj, thanks for such a great walk down memory lane! I may even start scouring pawn stores or craigslist for a Nintendo 64 and hopefully find this game for purchase. I could use something else to annoy my girlfriend with from time to time hahaha. I haven't played a wrestling game in about 5 years myself, but I'm sure if I do, I'll still be thinking No Mercy!

WWF No Mercy is the greatest wrestling game ever created. Followed by Wrestlemania 2000 and WcW vs nWo Revenge. World Tour was beast also. Other favorites were Mayhem, thunder, attitude. Its so many.

AKI Corp was a great dev for wrestling titles and wound up doing all of the gameplay work on Def Jam:Vendetta and Def jam: Fight for NY. I miss them!

Those games, to me, were the pinnacle of pro wrestling games. My friends and I would stage 'pay-per-view' tournaments with our characters before the actual events aired! Pay-per-view Sundays started at around 4:00 pm!

I've enjoyed the SvR series although I haven't purchased any of the games since SvR 2006. There was something about those N64 games that I haven't been able to find in the other games. They just don't seem to give me the same sense of 'strategy' that WM2000 and No Mercy did....

I think AKI actually developed those great titles. I dont know what it is, but I've played 1 version of these new wrestling games a couple of years ago (smackdown or some **** like that) and haven't bought one since then. I dont know what it was about the AKI developed titles, they haven't been topped yet.

I would actually play wcw vs nwo revenge before I play ANY one of the wrestling games made after that all the way up to this point.

AKI actually worked their magic again with DefJam Vendetta. What ever happened to AKI? They need to jump back in because EVERY wrestling title not made by them is garbage in my opinion.

I dont see how you guys play any of these new wrestling titles. I would say anything made after vendetta is really not good in my opinion.

Ah yes, the two best N64 games after Mario Kart IMO. I was a bigger fan of WM2K but both of these games were legendary.

Although WWF Wrestlemania Arcade holds most of my glory moments, No Mercy was a game that capture my eye after playing WM2k. Everything about was up to par if not top notch. I wouldn't dare as for a remake of this game. Leave and let glory is what No Mercy was about. Still my top 5 wrestling game as well.

i agree with everything you talked about in this article. The WCW/NWO World Tour & Revenge and WWF WM2000 & WWF No Mercy were my favorite games. I loved in the WCW game how you could have a quick match with a guy like Goldberg and spear a guy right away, get your special up and beat the weaker guys quickly like he used to in real life. The gameplay is what made these games. If they would only replicate this style & gameplay with some more up to date graphics and features, thats all anyone would want.
