Well if you watched Orton/Christian at OTL, the crowd seemed more for Christian and at certain points were booing Orton during their exchanges. But I get your general point.
To me, crowd reactions are relevant, but to a certain extent. I don't think they should be used completely as to whether a character is successful or not. To me the "Cena sucks' crowd is mostly just a bunch of guys who do it because it's the 'cool' thing to do, so to speak. You see that when you get random "CM Punk" chants, and things like people cheering Miz and Cody Rhodes at WM.
A lot of people cheer the heels and boo the faces, just b/c they think it's the cool thing to do. Not saying that the Cena character doesn't have its flaws, but a lot of the Cena sucks crowd have no argument other than "Cena can't wrestle" which is an absurd statement. Not talking about you guys on here, b/c a lot of you have rational well thought out reasons for disliking Cena. But a lot of the folks that boo him don't and only do it b/c it's the 'cool' thing to do.
Re: Austin reactions vs Cena reactions - I think that today's crowd is a lot more jaded and judgmental about the product. A lot more analytical. Now people are more likely to talk about stuff like how unreal it is for one guy to beat down 20 guys, and be more cynical about it. And the IWC (not using that term to put down anyone, since WE are the IWC), to a degree, is a factor in that regard.
A lot of the guys that were teens during the AE have grown to their 20s and don't like the goody goody Cena. It's obvious that WWE doesn't care about this and since the "Cena sucks' crowd are still paying money to see the show, who's the fool?

I still think the "Cena only sells to women and children' thing is overstated alot.
To sum up - sure there's a segment that doesn't like Cena. But they still shell out money to go to shows and boo Cena. It's not like Cena's getting no reaction, he still brings out something in people, negative or positive. In some ways the WWE realizes how polarizing he is, but ignores it b/c a) people still pay to see him and b) there's no one that could take his place at this moment in time. Maybe 2-3 yrs from now, but not at this very instant could you turn Cena and trust an Orton, Christian, Rey, etc to carry the torch as face of the company.
