I guess everyone forgets the part where Bret had creative control over his character. Vince agreed to it. Whether you think Bret not losing in Canada is stupid nor not, he should have had final say.
    NFL- Green Bay Packers
    NCAA- Florida State Seminoles
    NHL- Carolina Hurricanes

To be fair, the midcard one is probably more true than not. For every one Cody, there are 1,000 Damien Sandows.

Depends how much control he had. Maybe he had 100% final say, maybe he just had more input than the average employee. We'll never know for sure because anyone that would talk about it has their own angle to push.

Poor Sandow. That guy was incredibly misused.

        What a waste.

He’s certainly proved that since he left.

          Oh...

Say what you want about Sandow, but he was getting the loudest pops of anyone on the show when he was doing the Mizdow thing. To an embarrassing degree, actually.

Bret Harts analogy was a good one when talking about superstars. They're like gum. You keep chewing and the moment it loses its flavor you spit it out and move on to next one.

We've seen so many who got big pops at some point and then just "lost their flavor".

In the end, a guy like Sandow just got spit out so fast after winning MITB.

He was, and they really ****ed up the payoff to that whole story. No argument here.

The MITB thing was actually pre-Mizdow. They screwed that up, but then he got himself over again. The Mizdow thing led to nothing, because of course it did.

WWE has issues when someone gets himself cheered like that, even if it's a mid-card thing. Rusev Day would be another example of that. Fans loved it, had fun with it. Could have continued to be a thing, and not even a main event thing, but you can't have your midcarder guys get more over than your handpicked stars. They don't like that.

But where do they go if they never evolve the small schtick that gets them over? So Mizdow imitates Miz, gets cheers, fights Miz....then what? Where does that Schtick go from there?

Same thing with Rusev day. What was that going to evolve into?

Zach Ryder gets a push and guess what? We learn he isn’t actually that good or interesting beyond his skin deep schtick.

We can say WWE misuses these guys that get themselves over with a shtick but there’s gotta be something on the superstars to keep themselves over.

I think Sandow’s ceiling would have been playing something similar to the Elias role. He’ll never be a serious in ring competitor but they could throw him out there for a skit and he’ll make it entertaining

To me it doesn't really have to evolve into anything. Just don't turn Rusev heel with zero purpose when he's still being loudly cheered for Rusev Day. And in the process send Aiden English to parts unknown.

Sandow they turned into a comedy jobber at the end of his run. But he was still loudly cheered. Not everyone has to be a main eventer, but you don't need to minimalize guys like that.

Right, Rusev Day didn't have to evolve to anything or at least not yet. Sometimes it's just finding a gimmick and riding it out for as long as it gets a reaction.

Mizdow though, obviously had to change after the breakup with Miz. But again they screwed up the Mizdow turn, their breakup, and whatever feud should've happened coming off that.

They didn't give him a big shot as a solo guy, but I don't think he'd ever get more popular than he did as Mizdow anyway.

Sandow was ruined far before the Mizdow stuff. I'd argue that the Mizdow **** was a detriment.

                              His intelligence/elitist/snob gimmick was incredible.

Ultimately, it comes down to actually having writing. You can't just ride waves of popularity until they're dead. They die BECAUSE nothing evolves. Just like 'BALOR CLUB!" will. What the hell is a "Balor Club" when it doesn't mean anything even in the slightest? Oh, it's his group of fans? Wow, big whoop. Really helps the story there.
