I think there's more than enough talent to put on a damn good show without having to overload legends.
What Ziggler is missing is a wrestler to put him over. Ziggler spends too much time selling other guy's finishers. If he is billed to be the next WHC he better start winning matches against guys like Bryan, Kane, Christian not winning gimmies like Ryder, Slater, and Hawkins.

But it looks like Jericho is willing to help Ziggler out thank god.

I think there's a difference between a WWE star and, say, an actual star that people with only cursory wrestling interest or knowledge would actually care about.

Maybe it's just because he hasn't found the right story yet, but I don't think Ziggler is necessarily interesting enough outside of the ring to resonate on that "actual star" level. I think his max is a Randy Orton type of career, where he's mega-over within WWE but nobody that doesn't really pay attention knows who he is.

WWE seems hellbent on building Wrestlemania around guys with that type of crossover appeal every year, and I'm just not sure Ziggler will ever get there.

I don't think his name helps either. That shouldn't matter, but I actually think it does. "Dolph Ziggler" just doesn't sound all that marketable.

Good, I'm not the only one who thinks Dolph Ziggler sounds like he should be a ****ing clown or something.

Eh, I don't think Dolph's career path was to ever be a transcendent star.

But if a guy like "CM Punk" (with that name too) can become the face of the company, I don't see why Dolph can't possibly have as much of an impact.

Plus let's face it, when Austin debuted as the Ringmaster and Rocky Maivia first showed up did anyone think those guys would have a job five years later much less go on to be mega stars with popularity that went outside of wrestling?

I'm not saying Dolph will ever reach those levels or even get close to them but none of those other guys were instant stars. It took time.

Am I wrong in thinking that Austin has not transcended wrestling? I know he is god in the wrestling world. But I dont think his appeal stretches beyond that.

Same goes for guys like HBK, Undertaker, HHH, Punk, etc.

The only guys that I think have crossover appeal and are bonafide celebrities are Hogan and Rock. So in reality, I feel that its only Rock at the moment that can bring in viewers that arent really wrestling fans for a show like Mania.

And along the same lines, I dont see why Ziggler couldnt become a star in the same realm as the guys I mentioned earlier.

I think you're wrong. Outside of rock, Hogan, and flair, who else is a transcendent star ifAustin isn't? He was the face of the company during one of it's biggest periods. Whoop *** became a part of the lexicon. Agree to disagree on that one.

But when I say transcended, I'm talking about having broad appeal outside of wrestling fans.

If you went to any number of non wrestling fans and asked them who Stone Cold is, I dont think there would be many who would. Same with Flair.

I always thought I understood Stone Cold, until I watched the documentary on his career, which can be found on Netflix..

It's worth watching, for wrestling fans...

I'm not sure about the last bit Magic. I think a lot of non wrestling fans would know who Stone Cold is.

I'm positive that the majority of non wrestling fans know who Stone Cold and Ric Flair are.

Maybe you guys are right. I think we should all perform a mini experiment and ask people (mostly females because almost all guys have watched wrestling at some point) from work, school, etc and see what kind of responses we get.

I work as a trainer so Im going to ask clients and co workers. I'll report back with my results. Lol

Stone Cold has been in movies, so I think he gets the nod. Ric Flair, I'm not so sure.
