    Roster movement in Universe mode

I've set up my universe to model an early 1999 landscape. Instead of mirroring what actually happened, I'm planning to just see where things go in terms of booking and champions. With that in mind, I'd like to figure out a way to introduce free agency into things so guys can move between WWF, WCW, and ECW (or retire).

Here is a rough idea of what I have so far:
    - Create a basic spreadsheet listing every superstar and his/her brand
    - Using a random number generator (random.org, for example), assign every superstar a contract length up to 12 months. Inactive superstars will have a chance to be introduced when their "contract" is up. (maybe also do a 13th option for "lifetime" contracts...those people will NEVER move)
    - After the month is over, randomly determine if a person stays, goes, or "retires". I'm thinking roughly 65% chance they stay, 15% chance for each competitor, and 5% chance they retire (move to inactive)...do something similar for each inactive superstar to determine if/when they get introduced and where. Also, randomly decide on a new contract length for those expired people.
    - When a superstar moves between brands, randomly decide where they will fall in the rankings for each belt. To keep a little bit of realism, I'd probably throw some limitation in there to keep weird things from happening like WCW's #1 contender jumping to WWF only to be ranked near the bottom.

Anyway, I'm thinking this might be the way I go. This seems fairly realistic to me but keeps it random enough for surprises to happen. Any other thoughts? Has anyone else developed a system to simulate this? Open to suggestions...

I think im gonna at random just pick 3- 4 guys after each season.. (after TLC) from each brand for free agency and then randomly in game select them to differnt brands.

that movement is frequent enough for me and adds refreshment to the other guys careers, plus you can make house rules where you gotta wait seasons to change that guy again or something .. its easy to do and captures the free agent part of it mostly.

Hmmm...I already see contract length in there. What do you want to add?

If you're looking for the random aspect, you could always use Excel's built-in RAND() function. The only problem with that is that it will, by default, update every time you make a change to the sheet. You could turn off the option that allows formulas to calculate automatically but I'm not a fan of that.

My semi-amateur programming background sees where you could write a macro or something that would run all of the calculations for you and display the results. Maybe a "process month" button/sheet that subtracts 1 from the contract field for every superstar, runs the random checks on them if the contract expires, and reports the results back. Maybe this is the route I'll go, now that I'm thinking about it!

I know it was my idea initially but the more of thought about it, the more I agree with you! I say we give it a shot...How much background do you have with Excel? I'm happy to put it together but if you've got enough background to get something set up or started, it would help. I've got two young kids at home so I can't always get as much done on this type of thing as I'd like...

No worries...I'm nerdy enough to get excited about stuff like this. Let me see what I can come up with. Can't promise a timeline but I'm excited enough right now that I MAY be able to have something in place by Christmas...hopefully a lot sooner though.

Re: Roster movement in Universe mode

Ok, I think I have a pretty decent setup. It's still pretty rough-looking but it does some of the basic stuff. Here are some assumptions I've made...let me know what you think. They're fairly easy to change so let me know if you think I should change things...

                    1) Using the idea that a company may start negotiating a new contract early, I've given the current brand/company a 10% edge over the other brands. I'm trying to think of a way to allow you to set the "fluidity" so you can see more or less movement if you prefer. I've got some ideas but I don't know how quickly I can figure that out.
                    2) I gave every expired contract a 10% chance that they move to a free agent.
                    3) For Free Agents, I gave them a 20% chance to stay a free agent. I'm thinking that I might want it to be more though.

Do you think I should change any of these percentages? Once I feel better about how it's working, I'll post what I have. Like I said, it looks kinda rough right now but it does some of the basic stuff that I wanted.

I think all of it makes sense and will serve well as far as creating movement. Can't wait to see it!!!

Re: Roster movement in Universe mode

Alright, here's the first shot. Go to the Setup tab first. You'll need to enter the number of major shows (Brands) that you have up to 6. From there, you'll enter the brand names below. Enter the maximum and minimum contract lengths that you want. To initialize things, you can give everybody 1-month contracts or manually set them up however you want on the roster sheets (WWF will be Brand 1, WCW will be Brand 2, and ECW will be Brand 3 to start with). I just gave everyone a 1-month contract so that when I click the button, they'll automatically get a random contract. Once you've entered everyone and their contract length on the roster pages, come back and click the Process Month. That will rename your roster tabs to your brands (and change the header on those tabs), reduce everyone's contract by 1, and then check for expired contracts and give them a new one. I did change the FA stuff so they have a 10% chance of signing with each brand because I was seeing WAY to much movement from them otherwise.

When I randomized the contracts the first time, I didn't make any changes to companies or anything...just got the starting contract length. Once I'm done with my first month, I'll start doing that.

Anyway, let me know what you think or if you run into any trouble. If I get enough interest, I may try to make it look nicer and take it further. Suggestions/feedback is welcome.

MediaFire is a simple to use free service that lets you put all your photos, documents, music, and video in a single place so you can access them anywhere and share them everywhere.

Edit: Figured I should mention that it doesn't actually update rosters at this point. That will take more time to implement but I also thought it might be ok without that functionality. That way, if it does something you don't like, you can just ignore it rather than having to go undo something.
