The Little Team That Could: A Minnesota Twins Dynasty

I know I mostly stick to the NFL/NCAA dynasties, but I've decided to branch out in hopes of continued enjoyment of football dynasties, and just a general change. The Minnesota Twins are constantly contenders for the AL Central and World Series despite having one of the smallest payrolls in the league. They do it with one of the smartest front offices in the league, and a thirst for home grown talent.

Twinkies Rough Up Aardsma, Top Mariners
          Kubel's 2-Run single leads Twins

Through 8 innings the Mariners had the Twins right where they wanted them, but the bats finally came alive in time for the Twins to walk-off a winner against Seattle.

Felix Hernandez pitched 7 innings, giving up just a run before giving way to the Mariner bullpen. After a 1-2-3 8th, Seattle turned it over to David Aardsma, who managed to collect just one out before blowing the lead.

The home half of the ninth started with a Denard Span single, which was followed by a Joe Mauer double. Just Morneau was intentionally walked to get to Jason Kubel, who lined a two-run single into left-center field. Michael Cuddyer lined out to short before Alexi Casilla stepped up and laced a broken bat single into left, Morneau would come around from second to give the Twinkies the 4-3 win.

Scott Baker got the no decision, pitching 7 strong innings, striking out 9, walking none. Baker scattered 12 hits, but was responsible for just one of the three Mariner runs scored. Jose Mijares pitched two scoreless innings in relief to pick up the W.

Alexi Casilla capped the Twins rally with a walk-off
          single of David Aardsma.

                Twins Make Huge Splash
                Trade for Braves' Jones

Sighting a need for a big bat that could handle lefties, and a leader in the club house, the Twins made a move that could change the complexion of the AL Central. Sending reliever Pat Neshek, and two minor leaguers, 3B Brian Buscher and CF Emerson Hunter to the Braves in exchange for six time All-Star Chipper Jones.

Jones is in the final year of his contract, and waived his no trade clause to come to Minnesota. "I wanted to finish my career in Atlanta, but that wasn't in the cards. I'm happy to come to Minnesota, to a contender." said Jones.

                  Jones hitless in debut

Chipper Jones nearly went unnoticed in his Minnesota debut, and a game that looked as if it was in hand for the Twins slipped away in Chicago on the bat of Jermaine Dye.

Dye hit a three run shot in the bottom of the 7th off starter Fransisco Liriano, and Jayson Nix drove in two, including an 8th inning RBI single to send the Twins home losers.

Liriano struck out 10 in 7 innings, but surrendered homeruns to Alexei Ramirez in the 6th, which cut the lead to 4-1, and to Dye in the 7th.

Justin Morneau went yard for the Twins to extend their lead to 4-0 off starter John Danks. It was a pitchers duel for the first four innings, until Danks walked Chipper Jones to lead off the fifth. After a Michael Cuddyer single moved Jones over to third, Delmon Young drove him in with an fielder's choice. Young would score after stealing second base on a single by Denard Span.

Chicago lost as well, losing both Gordon Beckham and Alex Rios to injuries in the same inning. It is not known how long either will be out, but Beckham left with an elbow injury, and it looked as if Rios twisted his ankle sliding into third.

I Think you should put your story thingy into a newspaper
