The Evil Empire Strikes Back: Building on the Yankee Legacy

The franchise leads Major League Baseball in both revenue and titles, with 26 World Series championships and 39 American League Pennants. They have more championships than any other franchise in North American professional sports history, passing the 24 Stanley Cup championships by the Montreal Canadiens in 1999.Throughout the team's history, the franchise has produced some of the most celebrated players in Major League history, including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and Yogi Berra. The franchise has seen 44 of its players inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, and the Yankees have retired the numbers of 16 of its players.

The Yankees have achieved widespread popularity and a dedicated fanbase, although they have acquired a polarizing reputation for their heavy spending in pursuit of winning. Their rivalry with the Boston Red Sox is one of the fiercest and most historic in professional sports.

Yankees Ride Big Bats to Season Opening Sweep
              Offseason acquisitions pay dividends

There is nothing like starting off a brand new season with a sweep, especially if it's at the hands of a division rival. That's exactly what the Yankees have done to Baltimore, not just sweeping them, but outscoring them 22-6, hitting six homeruns, and collecting 28 hits in one of the most lopsided series in rivalry history.

CC Sabathia went to the mound for the Yankees in the season opener, and responded by pitching a complete game shutout, striking out 12 Orioles, and walking none in a dominating performance the Yankees expected when signing Sabathia in the offseason. It was a pitcher's duel early, until the Yankees finally got to Guthrie, chasing him after 5.1 innings. The Orioles threatened just once, but Sabathia induced a double play, then struck out Luke Scott to end the inning.

AJ Burnett would not fair as well in his first start as a Yankee, despite earning the win. He could thank the Yankees bat who once again pounded an Oriole team expected to finish in the basement. Hideki Matsui went yard for the second game in a row, this time a grand slam in the second off Jason Berken. Matsui finished the series with 2 homeruns and 7 RBIs to lead the Yankees offense, but it was a total team effort in sweeping the O's.

Alfredo Aceves pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless relief, and the Orioles never threatened after pulling as close as 11-6.
