RAYS BEAT UP ON TIGERS IN GAME 1! FINAL SCORE RAYS 11 TIGERS 1

Today just wasn't the tigers day, their pitching was terrible, and their bats weren't producing either, only amassing 6 hits, while striking out 9 times. The Rays on the other hand, had everything going their way, scoring 11 runs, while getting a solid pitching performance from rookie starter Matt Moore. Detroit made things dicy in the ninth by loading the bases thanks to a hit and two walks, but then Josh Lueke came in and struck out the final two batters. Welington Castillo was solid in his debut behind the plate for the rays, going 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI's.

Middle Reliever- Bobby Jenks (71) downward trend arrow, 3* potential

      REDSOX RECEIVE:

The Rays then sent Jenks to the twins for Kyle Waldrop

      RAYS RECEIVE

      TWINS RECEIVE

The Rays will keep Lavarnway in the majors and he will start at catcher, they send Waldrop to (AAA), call up shortstop Tim Beckham from (AAA), and send down rookie catcher Stephen Vogt to (AAA), to get more experience instead of sitting behind Lavarnway. Beck ham will start at Shortstop for the time being but may get sent back down too (AAA) if we trade for a veteran shortstop.

RAYS COME FROM BEHIND LATE TO BEAT TIGERS AND TAKE GAME TWO!! Final Score 2-1

This game was a Pitchers Duel from the start, the Rays starter, Alex Cobb gave up 1 run on two hits in 6 solid innings of work, but got the no decision. Tigers starter Andy Oliver pitched a solid 8 and 2/3, giving up 7 hits, most of which came later in the game, gave up two runs and walked 3 while getting the loss. Aroldis Chapman pitched 2 and a third in relief of Alex Cobb and struck out 2, getting the win, and Kyle Farnsworth came in with 1 out in the ninth and struck out both batters he faced to get his third save of the season. Detroit lead until the eighth inning when Welington Castillo got a pinch hit RBI triple to right center, then in the ninth Evan Longoria hit an RBI double to cash in the games winning run. Detroit could have won this one but left Oliver just a little bit too long.

        PITCHING STATS

        TAMPA BAY

          Re: Rays franchise

The Rays made 2 trades and signed 3 relievers and a center fielder today. The rays signed center fielder Taylor Anthony to a 1year deal worth 875K and sent him to (AAA), they signed middle reliever Arthur Rhodes to a 1 year deal worth 648K, they signed middle reliever Victor Machado to a 6 year deal worth 59K and optioned him to (A), and they signed middle reliever Alberto Castillo to a 1 year deal worth 620 and sent him to (AAA). Then later in the day, the Rays decided to shake up their roster by making two trades within an hour. The first deal looked like this:

          RAYS RECEIVE:

LF Mike Carp (77) 4* potential, 25 years old
SP Danny Hultzen (73) 5* potential, 22 years old
LF Trayvon Robinson (71) 4* potential, 24 years old

          SEATTLE RECEIVE:

SP Alex Cobb (79) 4* potential, 24 years old
SU Jake McGee (75) 4* potential, 25 years old
RF Brandon Guyer (73) 4* potential, 26 years old

This deal was a relatively neutral deal as the Rays got 2 prospects and a solid LF/DH and the Mariners got a prospect and two decent players that fit their style of play.

The second deal of the day was with the Dodgers. The Rays sent three vets for Middle reliever Kenley Janson.

          RAYS RECEIVE:

MR Kenley Janson (81) 4* potential, 24 years old

          DODGERS RECEIVE:

LF Luke Scott (75) 4* potential, downward arrow, 33 years old
LF Jesus Feliciano (65) 3* potential, downward arrow, 32 years old
CF Jeff Salazar (65) 3* potential, downward arrow, 31 years old

This deal may look one sided but the Dodgers were in need of some veteran presences as the Dodgers sent Salazar too (AAA) and Feliciano to (AA) to provide guidance to their youngersters. The Rays got another good arm in the pen and are currently on a five game winning streak.

                    Re: Rays franchise

TRADES AND ASSIGNMENTS + Updated lineups and rotation.

The Rays GM has gone on a bit of a trading tear making three trades involving high value players. The first trade was on April 11 with the Phillies, the Rays acquired Jim Thome in exchange for Alberto Castillo. Here's a look at how those players stack up against each other.

                    RAYS RECEIVE:

DH/1B Jim Thome (77), 3* with 4* potential, downward trend arrow

                    PHILLIES RECEIVE

Alberto Castillo (no idea what his stats were as he has disappeared :s)

This deal really didn't affect either team too much until the Rays GM sent DH/LF Mike Carp, RF Matt Joyce, and top 100 prospect Hak-Ju Lee to the Bluejays for INF Brett Lawrie and SS Yunel Escobar. Let's take a look at this deal in more detail.

                    RAYS RECEIVE:

INF Brett Lawrie (86) 4* with 5* potential
SS Yunel Escobar (82) 4* with 4* potential

                    BLUEJAYS RECEIVE:

LF Mike Carp (77) 3* with 4* potential
RF Matt Joyce (81) 4* with 4* potential
                    SS Hak-Ju Lee (68) 2* with 5* potential, top 100 prospect

This deal was fair, at least that's what the Rays GM thought as he gave up a Top 100 prospect and two everyday players for Escobar and Lawrie. Escobar however, would not be a Ray for very long as he was immediately shipped to the Cardinals along with first baseman Juan Miranda, for cardinals starter Jaime Garcia. Here's a more in depth look at the trade.

                    RAYS RECEIVE:

SP Jaime Garcia (86) 4* with 5* potential

                    CARDINALS RECEIVE:

SS Yunel Escobar (82) 4* with 4* potential
                    1B/DH Juan Miranda (70) 3* with 3* potential

This deal helped both teams as the Rays got another great starter and the cardinals were in desperate need of a shortstop as veteran shortstop Rafael Furcal is getting up there in age and is struggling terribly through the first two weeks of the season.

The Rays called up RF Sam Fuld from (AAA) to be the backup outfielder, they also called up MR Brandon Gomes and SS Reid Brignac. They sent down top 100 pitching prospect Danny Hultzen and top 100 prospect Tim Beckham to (AAA), so that they get everyday playing time to help grow.

Let's take a look at the new lineups and rotation for the Rays

                    VS. RHPDH
                    1. LF Desmond Jennings
                    2. CF BJ Upton
                    3. 3B Evan Longoria
                    4. DH Jim Thome
                    5. 1B Carlos Pena

                    8. RF Trayvon Robinson

                    2. CF BJ Upton

                      SERIES PREVIEW VS. REDSOX

                      Game 1 starters: TB James Shields (1-0, 1.29ERA, 0.43WHIP) VS. BOS Josh Beckett (0-1, 10.39ERA, 2.54WHIP)

                      Game 2 starters: TB Jaime Garcia (1-0, 0.00ERA, 0.44WHIP) VS. BOS Clay Buchholz (0-0, 10.39ERA, 2.31WHIP)

                      Game 3 starters: TB Jeremy Hellickson (1-0, 1.50ERA, 0.83WHIP) VS. BOS Daniel Bard (1-0, 0.00ERA, 1.13WHIP)

                      Game 4 starters: TB Matt Moore (1-0, 1.29ERA, 0.71WHIP) VS. BOS Alfredo Aceves (1-0, 1.35ERA, 0.75WHIP)

The Rays look to bounce back after their loss to the Tigers in the bottom of the ninth. They will send James Shields to the mound, who pitched extremely well in his first start. The Redsox will counter with Ace Josh Beckett who got roughed up in his first start. Game 2 will be Jaime Garcia's first game as a Ray, and we will see if there are any nerves as he will try to impress coach, Joe Madden. Game 3 will see Jeremy Hellickson, who also pitched good in his first start. Game four will be Matt Moore's chance to prove that his first start of the season wasn't a fluke and that this rookie is the real deal. He will go up against Boston's, Alfredo Aceves, who pitched well in his first start of the season. We will see how the new look Rays do again one of the best teams in the league.

                        RAYS WIN 5-0!

The Rays took game one of the series in very convincing fashion, scoring five runs on 7 hits. The Rays hit 3 round trippers in the game, two by Carlos Pena, and one by Evan Longoria. Jim thome almost went deep to center twice, but the ball died at the warning track. The Redsox left Josh Beckett in too long and he looked like he was gassed in the ninth. James Shields had another solid outing with a three hit shutout. Now let's look at the stats from the game.

                        PITCHING STATS

The Rays are moving BJ Upton to eighth in the lineup as he has struggled all year, hitting just .137. Hopefully this move will get BJ out of his slump. Trayvon Robinson will bat at the top of the order for the time being.
