The Reboot - A Boston Red Sox Franchise

    baseball3.jpg

    2013 Boston Red Sox

It is no secret the Boston Red Sox were a sinking ship in 2012. With the release of former Manager Terry Francona the team sought new direction with previous Mets Manager - Bobby Valentine. However, locker room issues would crop up from the 2011 season and see the Red Sox post their worst season since 1965, and their first losing season since 1997, finishing an abysmal 69-93. The team has since made changes the largest of which is bringing back long time pitching coach from the Toronto Blue Jays - John Farrell. Here is a list of the important moves Boston has made this off-season:

RHP Rubby De La Rosa acquired from the LA Dodgers
C David Ross signed during Free Agency
C/1B Mike Napoli signed during Free Agency
1B Mike Carp acquired from the Seattle Mariners
SS Stephen Drew signed during Free Agency
IF Brock Holt acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates
OF Jonny Gomes signed during Free Agency
OF Shane Victorino signed during Free Agency
RHP Ryan Dempster signed during Free Agency
RHP Graham Godfrey acquired from the Oakland Athletics
RHP Joel Hanrahan acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates
RHP Koji Uehara signed during Free Agency

With the listed moves the Red Sox have begun a reshaping of the team. Last year there was a large dump of players to the LA Dodgers that saw the likes of players such as Adrian Gonzalez and Josh Beckett dished. As Boston again looks to try and become a competitive team it is my job, as the new General Manager and Vice President of Baseball Operations for the Boston Red Sox, to see our goals through. I look forward to leading this team and am excited to get a look at our players as we shape our roster starting February 23rd when we head to spring training in Fort Myers.

      Interview with Jon Lester

Jon, you've been with the Boston Red Sox for 7 years now. Tell me, as someone who has been with the team through its highs of 2007 to its lows of 2012, how is the team different this year?

Jon Lester: Well I can tell you this much, as a team we are a whole. Last year a lot of outside and inner clubhouse distractions ruined what should have been a good season. This year with John Farrell back, a man this locker room respects a great deal, I think we are poised to get back to playing baseball the way we need to.

Today against the Rays you pitched 4 innings giving up 2 earned runs, how did you feel out there?

Jon Lester: Well still working on some mechanical issues, last year I was standing too upright in my release and hanging a lot of pitches. I'm working to correct that and I felt good today with my release and just need to get back in the flow of things.

One final question Jon, you are undoubtably the ace of this staff, how do you see the team performing overall this year?

Jon Lester: I don't like to make predictions. I will stand by what I said and believe this team is ready to compete again and I have faith that this team will do just that.

Boston Red Sox Offense Shows Up

Exceptional pitching by Clay Buchholz has Boston sitting at 2-0 currently in Grapefruit League Play. Boston coming off the recent extra innings game with the Tampa Bay Rays came in with momentum for their game with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Today's game saw the first spring appearance of 30 year old outfielder/first baseman Daniel Nava who looked to be a little rusty. The outfielder went 0-3 with one walk in Sundays game. Aside from that though Red Sox fans seem to have a lot to look forward to, with Mike Napoli providing offense for the second game in a row and young catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia getting his first home run of the Spring - a 3 run jack in the 3rd inning.

Finally onto the performance of the Red Sox pitching staff. Clay Buchholz looked back in his 2010 form despite his lackluster performance the past 2 seasons. Pitching a strong 4 innings the right-hander allowed 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 3. If the Red Sox rotation can continue to fix what plagued them last year, Boston could be looking at a strong season.

          Red Sox Pen Struggles

Welcome to State of the Nation! We're going to touch down very quickly on the issues seen with the Red Sox following their first loss this Spring to division rival - Tampa Bay.

First was the struggles of Free Agency pickup this last off-season, Ryan Dempster. Dempster pitched the standard 4 innings allowing only 3 hits however 2 of them were deep bombs. Along with this his control seemed off as he walked 3 in the process of giving up 3 runs.

Second was the horrendous performance of Stan Wallace, a AAA spring invitee. Wallace went only 3.2 innings allowing 7 hits, 3 home runs, and 5 earned runs. Needless to say this young man is going to have to have a magical rest of the Spring to make the roster this year.

Finally the struggles of Shane Victorino thus far has to have Red Sox faithful worried. Victorino is batting just .071 with only 1 hit in his 14 plate appearances this Spring. Did the Sox sign a man well past his prime? Time will tell as Spring rolls on, this has been the State of the Nation.

Lackey Free and Easy in Bullpens
by Jeff Lippman | Fantasy Writer

Boston starter John Lackey is in excellent physical shape as spring begins, reports MLB.com Wednesday. Lackey has lost 17 pounds, according to skipper John Farrell. Lackey, who missed all of last year due to Tommy John surgery, has been sharp in early bullpens. "A good work day today," Farrell said. "Freeness in his delivery, freeness in his arm, staying behind the ball, repeating his delivery, all the things we're looking for right now, he did them quite well. He's in great condition, so the 35-pitch bullpen [session] was not really taxing for him. As he's gone through the physicals and the strength testing of the shoulder, all those are consistent. He's more athletic. He has more ability to repeat his delivery, and, honestly, he feels pretty darn good about himself.

Lefty Felix Doubront Starts out Well

Coming off his first full season in the majors with a record of 11-10, Felix Doubront has Boston management excited that he could turn into a solid 4th or 5th starter. His start this spring has reinforced those hopes. Throwing his opening 4 innings Doubront had hitters guessing as he struck out 5 while allowing 5 hits which he managed well across his start. The bullpen picked it up behind him not allowing a run in the Sox 3-1 victory over the Cardinals.

Jonny Gomes has also been having a great spring through 4 games batting .455 and belting his second homerun during the first week. Red Sox Nation should still be weary of the outfield duo however but todays play did see a hit from a very cold Shane Victorino coupled with a steal and a run scored.

Re: The Reboot - A Boston Red Sox Franchise

                sotrn_header_2005.jpg

Welcome back to our second State of the Nation this year. Currently we are 5 games into spring and the Red Sox are facing potential concerns in the bullpen. Aside from this however young talent was put on display as Boston rested most of its starters. Lets recap!

John Lackey, who looks like he worked hard this off-season dropping quite a bit of weight, was everything the Sox could hope for. Lackey has made Red Sox management question his position for awhile as a pitcher who is paid a lot to play poorly but perhaps he is on his way back to form. He pitched 4 shutout innings Thursday before turning it over to his competition for a starting spot Alfredo Aceves who matched him stat for stat. This competition will be an interesting one to watch.

Secondly, Joe Hanrahan continues his struggles as over 1 inning of work he allowed 3 hits and 2 earned runs. Needless to say the Sox may be looking to the minors for a bullpen boost or talking to the league to see what is available.

Finally the young talent, consisting of Ryan Kalish, Jose Iglesias and Jackie Bradley Jr. took the field today. The young ones combined for 3 hits and 3 RBIs in the 10-2 win over the Pirates. I will certainly be watching them closely as they fight to fill out that 25 man roster this season! This has been State of the Nation, thank you for reading!

New Face of the Front Office

Continuing with what we've been doing this Spring we are going to introduce the starting team including a few coaches and the GM. The new GM and VP of Baseball Operations for the Boston Red Sox is former veteran - Michael Anthony. Anthony now 22, served the US Army since he was 17 as an Infantryman on the front lines. During his off time he extensively studied baseball and management to get a shot at this job. Another great thing about this job for Anthony was that he grew up not far from Fenway Park, a native of South Boston, MA. Anthony hopes to keep the core of this franchise together but understands that things may need to be moved in order to push this franchise for the future. For now however, Anthony is happy with his team and will work towards returning them to the winning ways his beloved Sox are capable of.

                    Lester Continues to Look Good

The Boston Red Sox are gaining confidence this spring as the rotation continues to impress. Lester pitched another 4 inning outing allowing 0 runs off 2 hits. The bullpen then came out and helped hold down the shutout as they combined for 5 innings with 4 hits allowed. Rumors continue to swirl however about the Sox seeking another addition to the bullpen early on as they continue to try and find the proper roles for their personnel.

The biggest story today however remains the red hot start of CF Jacoby Ellsbury who is batting .409 and snagged his second bag of the spring. As Boston continues to play with their outfield its obvious the staple of the group in center field will be going nowhere.

Looking good so far, and btw Stan Wallace is actually Steven Wright, who's a knuckleballer who was starting in AAA but in the bullpen now.
