    A What-If Story- 2014 New York Mets

Whats up everyone. I'm using MLB 2k12 and Mkarsh's 2014 rosters for this. I'm using his sliders(only change is classic pitching instead of total control). Now for the what if? My what if scenario is What if Matt Harvey didn't get for the 2014 season and how the team would do. I'm only controlling the Mets, but will moderate things around the league as I go and make sure nothing too unfair happens.

    Drew and Morales finally sign

Kendrys Morales and Stephen Drew have been looking for homes this whole offseason. They both finally signed today. Drew got a 1 year deal from the Mets. He will start at SS for the Mets and leadoff vs righties. Morales will play first base for the Pirates and provided a middle of the order presence. Both of these teams had weaknesses at these two spots so the signings make sense. Ervin Santana is still a free agent as opening day looms.

      Spring Training Surprises
      1. Lucas Duda- He will get a chance to start the year in leftfield despite the blunders last year. The Mets need his powerful bat in the lineup so they give him another shot in the outfield. If he struggles offensively he could quickly lose his job, but for now he is the guy in LF.
      2. Juan Centeno- Coming into spring training it was assumed Anthony Recker would return as the backup catcher. The Mets decided to go with Centeno. Centeno is a great defender who is infamous for being the first catcher to throw out Billy Hamilton. The Mets love his defense and his lefty contact bat should provide a nice complement to Travis.
      3. Young Bullpen- Veterans Kyle Fansworth and Jose Valverde were bought in on minor league deals. Dice K and John Lannan were also being considered for long man spots. The Mets decided to go with the young arms Gonzalez Germen and Familia over the veterans. The only veterans in the bullpen are former journeyman Carlos Torres and 2nd year player Scott Rice(who spent 14 years in the minors).

Matt Harvey came out strong striking out two in a 1-2-3 first. However he gave up a solo homer to Alexi and allowed another run on a wild pitch in the third innings. In the 4th with 0 outs Wright, Granderson, and Satin hit three singles in a row to give us our best chance of the game. Young hit into a FC driving in a run. That would be the only run we would score off Torres. They got one in the 6th on a Quentin homer. Harvey settled down and got into the 8th, but left with 2 men on base. Scott Rice did not back him up as he allowed 2 hits in a row to give the Padres a 4th run. Familia worked out of the trouble to limit the damage. The only other scoring chance we got was in the 9th. Wright and Satin both singled. Granderson stroke out between the two singles. Ike pinch hit for Chris Young and ked as well. Duda hit for TDA and grounded out to end the game. TDA broke his toe during the game and will go on the 15 day dl. Recker will come up from AAA and platoon with Centeno. Matt Harvey was angry after his performance "I expect better out of myself and the fans expect better out of me especially on opening day. I will step up next time, it will be a very good year."

Colon allowed 2 runs in the third inning due in part to a misplay by Lucas Duda turning a Hundley single into a double. Colon settled down until the 6th when Denorifa hit a 2 run homer to make it 4-0. Colon then left the game with a bruised hip. John Lannan will join the rotation in his spot and likely make 2 starts in Colon's place. We had several chances throughout the game that were ruined by 3 double plays. Our best chance was in the 7th. Granderson singled, Ike walked, and Duda hit a RBI double setting us up with second and third with 1 out. We couldn't score from their and for the second straight game a Padres' starter goes into the 9th.

Curtis Granderson's big day started off quickly, when he threw out Will Venable trying to stretch a single into a double. The game went through the second scoreless. The Padres stuck first in the third. Everth Cabrera doubled and was singled home by Chris Denorfia. We answered in the bottom of the third. Tejada who was getting the start at SS over Drew(nothing wrong with Drew just sit him against lefties sometimes) hit a single. Wheeler laid down a bunt. Hundley tried to get out Tejada at second, but Ruben beat the throw putting two men on. Eric Young tried to bunt for a hit, but this time Hundley threw out the runner at second. Murphy hit a RBI single to left to tie the game. Wright stroke out to end the inning. With 2 outs in the 4th Chase Headley hit a homer down the right field line to make it 2-1. Hundley then singled and got to second on a throwing error by Eric Young. We intentionally walked Amarista and got Luebke to fly out. Granderson and Satin drew back to back walks to start the bottom of the 4th, but we could not score. The turning point was in the 5th. The Padres loaded the bases with 1 out. Yonder Alonso lined out to Murphy and Headley grounded out to end the threat. In the bottom of the 5th Young singled and stole second, Murphy hit a line drive off Luebke's elbow that deflected toward second, keeping Young at second, but allowing Murphy to be safe at first.. Wright flew out. Granderson stepped up and had his first major moment as a Met. He jumped on the first pitch and hit a high blast, that finally landed and hit the left field foul pole to give the Mets their first lead of the year! This is why the Mets signed Granderson this offseason, they needed power. In the bottom of the 6th Lucas Duda hit a pinch hit two run bomb deep into the bullpen to give us a 6-2 lead. Our bullpen held them until the 9th. Familia allowed a run with 2 outs, but was able to get out of the inning before we felt we needed to get Parnell.

Player of the game: Curtis Granderson

Stanton started off the scoring with a long solo homer off Niese in the first. It would stay 1-0 until the top of the 4th. Jones and Bogusevic singled. Lucas singled home Jones. Solano followed with a single to load the bases. Niese retired Flynn to get out of the jam holding the deficient to 2-0. We got our first base runner of the game on a Murphy single with 1 out in the bottom of the forth. Wright followed with a single. Granderson hit a RBI double. Satin hit a line drive into right center field. Yellich dove and missed the ball. It rolled all the way to wall. Wright and Grandy easily scored. By the time Yelich got up and found the ball at the warning track Satin was already at third. He rounded third and went for home! He beat the throw home for a 3 run inside the parker to give us a 4-2 lead. A walk to Drew and an error put 2 more on. The Marlins went to the bullpen and bought in long man Henderson Alvarez who got out of the inning with out any more scoring. Neither team scored in the 5th. In the 6th Bogusevic Lucas and Solano(RBI) started the inning with singles to cut our lead to 4-3. Niese got the next 2 men out, but allowed a RBI single to Yelich to tie the game. Despite their being runners at the corners the Mets walked Stanton intentionally and bought in Scott Rice to get out the lefty Jones, which he did to keep the game tied at 4. Granderson walked and Satin singled to start the 6th, but Alvarez kept us off the board. Germen pitched a perfect 7th and 8th while Alvarez kept us from scoring in both frames despite 2 base runners in the 8th. Parnell pitched a 1-2-3 9th. With 1 out in the bottom of the 9th Young reached on an error and Murphy walked. This set up Wright and Grandy with chances to win it. Wright flew out and Grandy poped out. We headed to extras. Parnell allowed a single, but got a scoreless 10th. Alvarez set us down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 10th. Vic Black came in for the 11th. With 2 outs and a man at first Stanton stepped in. Black tried to get a slider over the outside corner, but left it too far up and Stanton golfed it over the center field fence to give them a 6-4 lead. Alvarez stayed in and got out the first man in the bottom of the 11th to finish off 7 scoreless innings of relief. The Marlins bought in Cishek who got the last two outs with a walk between them. The Mets fall to 1-3 now.

After going down 1-2-3 in the first our bats came out swinging in the second. Granderson started it with a double. Ike singled him home. Chris Young finally got his first hit as a Met to put 2 men on. Duda hit an RBI single. Young went to third, but Duda as thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. Centeno hit a hard ground ball in the hole, Solano made a diving play to rob him of a hit, but got a rbi groundout. Gee started a 2 out rally with a single. Drew got his first hit as a Met with a single. Murphy hit a RBI double to make it 4-0. David Wright put an exclamation point on the inning with a 3 run bomb to right center. The only other one we scored was on back to back doubles by Wright and Grandy in the 7th. Gee cruised throughout the entire game. His line tells the story. He went into the 9th with a shutout, but gave up a homer to Ed Lucas. He bounced back to strike out the next batter, but then came up lame. He bruised his shin and had to leave the game. Vic Black came in to get the last two outs. Gee's injury is not serious. He will not go the DL. The Mets have an offday following the next series so if he needs an extra day or two we can just skip his spot, but that is still TBD. The rubber match of this series will be a great matchup in Matt Harvey vs Jose Fernandez.

At last the highly anticipated Harvey/Ferandez matchup arrived. It didn't disappoint. Harvey allowed a run in the second on 3 straight singles to Lucas, Solano, and Furcal, but escaped trouble. Ferandez struggled with his control in the first four innings throwing just 29 strikes compared to 28 balls and walking four guys. However we could not get any hits off of him and could not score. Both pitchers found their groove and the game started moving quickly. We finally got our first hit on a single by Duda in the 5th, but nothing came out of it.Bogusevic got a hanging slider from Harvey in the 6th and didn't miss it connecting on a solo homer making it 2-0. Harvey didn't allow anything else over 8 innings. Meanwhile Fernandez still had his shutout into the 8th. He picked up his 10th strikeout and retired the first two hitters of the 8th. Murphy got a 2 out single. Wright stepped up. He took a 2 strike outside pitch and went with it and hit in the air down the right field line. It headed toward the corner and landed in the second row for a dramatic game tying two run homer. Citi Field came alive as the Mets tied it. Harvey was pinch hit for earlier in the 8th so Rice came in and got a 1-2-3 9th. The Marlins kept Fernandez in for the 9th. Ike got a leadoff single and the Marlins pulled Fernandez. We pinch ran Eric Young for Ike. Chris Young bunted Eric to second and Duda came up. He lined a single up the middle. Eric Young scored easily and the Mets had an amazing 3-2 win and are now 3-3 on the season as we head to Philly for 3 games.

We scored all of our runs off Burnett in the first four innings. The big hit was a Drew 2 run double in the second. Wright added 2 RBIS, and Granderson had 1. Burnett settled down and the Philly bullpen shut us down for the rest of the game. Lannan was incredible in his spot start, the only reason he even allowed a run was because of bad defense. Very impressive performance by Lannan.

Our pitching got wrecked lead by 2 homers and 5 RBIS by Brown. Wheeler and our bullpen got roughed up all day. Horrible game, not much else to say. Let's bounce back in the rubber game.

                      Next up:
