New York Mets: Rise From Mediocrity
Hello, Everyone. I have been following on this site for quite some time and I love the work on here so I decided I would do my own. I am currently halfway through my Mets Franchise and will be keeping you guys updated from here on out (don’t worry I’ll give you a season recap up until now). I play every pitch, so I am very emotionally and mentally involved in this. I will be writing as a beat writer for the Mets, so that’s the perspective I’ll be trying to portray. Hopefully you all enjoy it.Tags: None -

New York- Hello there Mets fans. I was just hired here at nymets.com and they have appointed me to get you caught up to what’s going on in Flushing as well as around the league. We got a lot to get to so lets get started!
First thing’s first. Here is a look at the standings around the league:
MLB Standings - Updated: Jul 18, 2014 AL EAST W L GB RS RA Baltimore Orioles 56 39 433 372 Boston Red Sox 62 43 4.0 430 389 Tampa Bay Rays 50 47 7.0 416 399 Toronto Blue Jays 49 47 7.5 395 397 New York Yankees 48 47 8.0 390 382 AL CENTRAL W L GB RS RA Detroit Tigers 54 40 397 350 Chicago White Sox 51 46 4.5 382 447 Kansas City Royals 47 48 7.5 418 430 Minnesota Twins 37 58 17.5 374 429 Cleveland Indians 31 65 24.0 379 463 AL WEST W L GB RS RA Texas Rangers 54 41 393 351 Oakland Athletics 52 43 2.0 462 413 Seattle Mariners 50 45 4.0 397 379 Los Angeles Angels 45 50 9.0 393 419 AL WILD CARD RACE W L GB RS RA Houston Astros* (AL WEST) 41 55 13.5 368 387 Boston Red Sox 62 43 430 389 Oakland Athletics 52 43 462 413 Chicago White Sox 51 46 2.0 382 447 Seattle Mariners 50 45 2.0 397 379 Tampa Bay Rays 50 47 3.0 416 399 Toronto Blue Jays 49 47 3.5 395 397 NL EAST W L GB RS RA Washington Nationals 64 31 426 266 Atlanta Braves 57 38 7.0 383 332 New York Mets 55 40 9.0 335 315 Philadelphia Phillies 43 52 21.0 331 360 Miami Marlins 39 56 25.0 322 414 NL CENTRAL W L GB RS RA Pittsburgh Pirates 50 45 395 359 Chicago Cubs 43 52 7.0 351 369 Milwaukee Brewers 43 53 7.5 368 412 Cincinnati Reds 41 54 9.0 351 413 St. Louis Cardinals 36 61 15.0 374 412 NL WEST W L GB RS RA Los Angeles Dodgers 58 39 457 398 San Diego Padres 49 46 8.0 365 349 San Francisco Giants 48 48 9.5 344 333 Colorado Rockies 46 50 11.5 380 408 Arizona Diamondbacks 43 53 14.5 317 369 NL WILD CARD RACE W L GB RS RA Atlanta Braves 57 38 383 332 New York Mets 55 40 335 315 San Diego Padres 49 46 6.0 365 349 San Francisco Giants 48 48 7.5 344 333 Colorado Rockies 46 50 8.5 380 408 Chicago Cubs 43 52 12.0 351 369
As you can see, the Mets find themselves in the division with the best team in baseball. The Washington Nationals are the only team with more than 60 wins, and there is no sign of them slowing down. Being 9 games out of first, the Mets are more than likely going to have to hope for a wild card spot. Lucky for them they are in control of the second wild card behind the Atlanta Braves. The toughest division in baseball this year, in terms of potential playoff teams, is clearly the NL East.
As far as the team itself is concerned. These are the players on the team as it’s constructed at the All Star break.

There have been a few major changes this year, especially to the pitching staff to make room for the young pitching in the farm system to blossom at the majors. Overall, the prospects have held their own, and Syndergaard has come on as one of the best pitchers on the staff. Sandy Alderson and the front office made room for these young pitchers by moving Dillon Gee and Bartolo Colon to the Dodgers. Separate deals were done a few weeks apart, but the main prize in the deal was the acquisition of young SS prospect, Stefan Mitre. He should be major league ready in three to four years and he finds himself in AA at the moment.
Another deal made as recently as two days before the All Star break was the acquisition of Starlin Castro. There have been significant struggles at Shortstop since the departure of Reyes. The platoon of Tejada and Flores grew even weaker when Flores was lost for the year to an achilles injury. Tejada took over the starting role and prospect Wilfredo Tovar was forced to play behind him for much of the season. The front office is hoping that they found their solution in Castro, but the move did not come without consequences. Rafael Montero, another young prospect who had been pitching in the bullpen all year, was moved along with Bobby Parnell and his expiring contract.

Not many Mets on the leader boards, but solid pitching and clutch hitting has given them the 55-40 record they are boasting at the all start break. The season began with four straight losses, and the team was looking at yet another lost season. Fortunately, they found some consistency and rounded into form at the end of April. A winning streak of 7 games in the middle of May didn’t hurt either and they were as much as 20 games above .500. Losing 8 of their last 12 before the break has left them at their current record.

There are two glaring problems within the Mets lineup that I’m sure you have noticed. Both Daniel Murphy and David Wright are having sub par seasons. Neither is hitting over .250, and Daniel Murphy especially has been struggling as of late. If the team wants to keep its playoff hopes alive they are both going to have to return to form. Matt Harvey, the supposed ace of the staff, has also had an up and down year, as well as Jon Niese. Luckily there have been some bright spots in the lineup and pitching staff that has kept the team within striking distance. Curtis Granderson, who was signed this off-season, leads the team in many categories, including home runs, average, and RBIs. Eric Young Jr. has been a bright spot at the top of the order. He has missed time due to a hamstring issue, but when he is on the field he is electrifying, stealing a league leading 35 bases. From a pitching standpoint, Zack Wheeler has come on strong this year, being the first Met to 10 wins, and Syndergaard, since being called up in early June, has been superb. Jenrry Mejia, the starter turned closer, has been lights out and earned his first all-star bid, along with Curtis Granderson.

Overall, the first half of the season has been a success. The Mets are managing to play winning ball, even while holding the cellar in team home runs. They have done this by leading the league in stolen bases, thanks to EYJ, Murph, and David Wright. The pitching has been stellar all season and the staff ranks second in team ERA and Runs Against.
The Mets open up the second half of the season with a three game set against the Padres later this afternoon. -
Re: New York Mets: Rise From Mediocrity
Personally can't see the Cubs giving up Castro unless they get Wheeler and Syndergaard or atleast 1 of them plus DeGrom, as this has been heavily discussed on the trade forum thread.
So I am curious what you gave up to get him in your Franchise.Comment

Re: New York Mets: Rise From Mediocrity
I gave up Montero, Parnell, and another high potential starting pitcher. Unfortunately, I was unaware of the OSFM rosters at the time I started, so the minor league players aren't the real life players. The ones with real names I had to create myself and try and be as realistic as possible.Comment

Mets Can’t Wright Ship
July 18, 2014
Jack Cole
San Diego – After the Mets came skidding into the All Star break losing 8 of 12; they were unable to get back on the right track, losing 6-1 to the Padres. The game featured young Noah Syndergaard (5-1, 2.13 ERA) matched up against Ian Kennedy (7-6, 3.85).
After a single in the first by Granderson, Duda drove him in with a double two batters later for an early lead. Unfortunately, the bottom of the inning would be a pre-cursor to a very sloppy night for the Amazins. The Captain, David Wright had two throwing errors in the first inning alone, and would add another one in the 6th. His three error night was accompanied by an 0-3 night at the plate. Not the best of performances from your captain.
The rest of the team followed suit with poor focus and bad decision-making. Recker added an error of his own and several times a hesitation by a fielder to make a throw resulted in a base runner for the Padres. The pinnacle of the sloppy play came in the 4th inning when Syndergaard walked in two runs in a bases loaded jam, including surrendering a walk to the opposing pitcher. An infield single that Recker failed to make an easy play split those two walks, and Maybin reached first safely.
The Mets weren’t much better on the base paths when Granderson tried to score on a hit to left by Duda that got through the third baseman. He was thrown out by a country mile, and the Mets never threatened again. Starlin Castro, who was recently acquired in a trade, has yet to register a hit with the team.
This game also marked the return of Eric Young Jr. from the DL. He went 0-4.
3 UP
Curtis Granderson- Two more hits and a stolen base for the Mets' most productive player this year.
Lucas Duda - Lone RBI for the team.
Vic Black- Only pitcher to not give up a run.
3 DOWN
David Wright- Three errors and a hitless night makes for an awfully lonely night in the hotel.
Noah Syndergaard- Control issues. Especially walking the pitcher in a bases loaded situation.
Starlin Castro- Has yet to record a hit for the Mets.

Niese Struggles, Mets Can’t Complete Comeback
July 19, 2014
Jack Cole
San Diego- A quick start for the Padres was too much for the Mets to overcome, losing 7-4 to their West Coast foes. Jon Niese’s (5-6, 4.05 ERA) struggles continued as he let the Padres jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Niese who is winless in his last 5 starts, has been a lone blip in an otherwise dominant starting rotation. As the veteran in the rotation, the younger pitchers are looking to him to lead the way, and his recent troubles are correlated to the downward turn the team is taking.
The Mets responded in the top of the second with a run of their own. Starlin Castro recorded his first hit as a Met with a bullet to left center. He reached second without a throw, and Lagares drove him in one batter later. A two run bottom half of the inning from the Padres extended their lead to 4-1. Granderson cut into the lead with a blast to right center in the 4th, but that was as close as they would get. The Mets threatened again in the 5th, but Granderson would fly out to right to end the inning.
“He left a slider hanging right in the middle of the zone. I just missed it.” Granderson shook his head standing at his locker after the game. You can tell the team as a whole is growing frustrated.
Niese ran into control issues in the 6th inning as he walked two straight batters and later threw a wild pitch that scored a run. Cory Luebke (5-8, 3.27 ERA) had his own problems in the 6th, but they were of the injury variety. He was forced to leave with elbow soreness and he would receive an MRI after the game.
The 7th inning marked the Mets last gasp at a comeback, started by a leadoff double from Lagares, which was his fourth hit of the night. Two walks followed that hit, and the Mets had the bases loaded with one out. Granderson singled to right bringing home two more runs, giving him three RBIs on the day. Murphy grounded into a rally ending double play on the next pitch. The Mets would go quietly the rest of the way.
Murph, who has been slumping for the last month was none too happy after the game. “I need to get out of this funk. I [freaking] suck right now.” Mets captain, David Wright, is also in a month long slump. He posted three strikeouts tonight, dropping his average below .240. “I put this one on me. I’m the captain; I can’t be playing like this. Three errors yesterday and three strikeouts tonight. It’s embarrassing.”
David Wright Strikeout.jpgWright strikes out three times as his slump continues
It’s tough to win when your two “best” hitters are slumping the way that they are. The Mets look to avoid the sweep tomorrow afternoon.
Everth Cabrera entered play with a 7 game hitting streak, which he extended in the first inning.
3 UP
Juan Lagares- Stat-sheet-stuffer game from Juan. 4-4, R, RBI
Curtis Granderson- 3 RBIs and a HR. Continues his steady play.
Starlin Castro- First hit as a Met and a run scored.
3 DOWN
Daniel Murphy- Grounded into a crucial double play. Failed to record a hit.
David Wright- 3 strikeouts for the big guy. Tough day at the office.
Jon Niese- Trouble right from the start. Ended with 7 ER, a season high.

Blockbuster Deal Sends Texiera to Washington
July 19, 2014
Jack Cole
San Diego-The Washington Nationals and the New York Yankees have agreed to terms on a deal that will send first baseman, Mark Texiera, to the Nationals. In return the Yankees will be receiving two infield prospects in 24 year old third baseman, Manny Miranda, and 24 year old Shortstop, Stephen Tran.
This deal is a clear move to make the Yankees younger in the infield for the future, while the Nationals are making a push towards the World Series this year.
Miranda is a well-rounded, right-handed third baseman who will be relied on to take the spot of Alex Rodriguez. Rodriguez's numbers have been in decline in recent years, and his future with the team is shaky after his most recent steroid issue. The Yankees are hoping that Tran, on the other hand, can be a serviceable replacement at Shortstop with Derek Jeter's career coming to an end. After almost 20 years of production and unparalleled leadership at short, the Yankees are finally having to turn elsewhere. Tran looks to be a switch-hitting, contact hitter in the majors with decent range and speed on the base paths. Both young prospects possess 'A' potential and could be up in the Majors as soon as the middle of next year.
Mark Texiera.jpg Texiera looks to add to his 59 RBIs in Washington
Texiera will be joining a MLB best Nationals squad looking to capture it's first World Series since moving to Washington. Texiera will be a huge addition to an already dangerous lineup. The first baseman is hitting .259 with 18 HR and 59 RBIs. He also can suffer from the strikeout bug at times, with 69 on the year.
This trade is obviously bad news for our Metsies. Washington is positioning themselves to put even more separation between them and the rest of the NL East. The Mets need to right the ship fast, or they are going to find themselves left behind and fighting for a Wild Card spot. Losing two in a row to the team chasing them, the Padres have moved within 4.0 games of the second wild card spot. Will Sandy and Co. make another move to strengthen the team, or will he sit back and hope that the bats start heating up?Comment

Re: New York Mets: Rise From Mediocrity
Nice snag with getting Castro. Guessing the Tejada project is finished in your franchise. Tejada is better defensively IMO, but Castro has the bat. Also good to see a Mets franchise on these forums. Texiera to the Nationals is BEASTLY.
Gonna be a interesting wild card race at the end for these Mets. If they don't faulter of course! Ha, good luck, buddy. Seems like you've overachieved already, hopefully you can sustain it.Comment

Re: New York Mets: Rise From Mediocrity
Jacob deGrom.jpg
deGrom Can’t Make It Out of the Third, Mets Get Swept
July 20, 2014
Jack Cole
San Diego- Yikes. This series was over before it started. Rookie, Jacob deGrom (6-6, 3.19 ERA), had the toughest outing of his career, surrendering 7 earned runs on 7 hits.
It didn’t take long for this game to get ugly, as deGrom allowed the first six men to reach base safely, including a three run blast from All-Star Chase Headley. It’s tough enough to win facing the opposition’s ace, but when you give up five runs in the first inning you are doomed. Hard throwing Andrew Cashner (10-6, 4.17 ERA) delivered a strong performance and kept the Mets at bay while his team was lighting up deGrom. This game marks the second time in as many days that the Mets’ starting pitching has surrendered 7 runs.
A beautiful Sunday afternoon was anything but for the Amazins, as they dragged themselves through another miserable 9 innings. Since the All-Star break, the team is winless and looking as bad as they have since opening the season with four straight losses. Mets’ pitching is a shell of itself from before the break, giving up 21 total runs over the last three days. For a team that ranks last in the Majors in home runs and RBIs, that’s not a recipe for victory.
“I don’t know what’s going on, but we need to snap out of it fast,” an abrupt Terry Collins said after the loss. Terry Collins.pngTension is growing in the locker room, as some are looking towards manager for answers. One particular question they might want answered is why Travis d’Arnaud got the start today. “It was a day game after a night game. Standard procedure.” Terry was not amused when his game plan was questioned.
He may be right, but d’Arnaud has been AWFUL this year. The “best offensive catcher since Piazza” has been anything but. Batting .174 with 1 HR and 20 RBIs is not going to cut it, especially when Anthony Recker has been playing so well, especially as of late.
A few bright spots for the Mets today were the contributions of Curtis Granderson and Starlin Castro. Grandy continues his hot hitting as he added another home run to his total, giving him 18 on the year. Castro had his first break out game for the Mets this season with three hits, two runs scored, and one run batted in. The Mets are going to need him to stay hot if they have any chance of making the playoffs, especially with the disappearance of their pitching.
Daniel Murphy continues to slump, as he went hitless again today. He had one hit in the series.
The Mets head to Seattle to face the Mariners in a three game set.
3 UP
Curtis Granderson- Added another home run. His second in two games.
Starlin Castro- Three hits for the new guy.
Jenrry Mejia- Worked a quick 9th inning. Unfortunately it wasn’t a save opportunity.
3 DOWN
Travis d’Arnaud- Hitless with two strikeouts.
Jacob deGrom- Tough day for Jacob. Needs to find some consistency.
Daniel Murphy- Another hitless day for the second baseman.

Re: New York Mets: Rise From Mediocrity

NL East Busy as Trade Deadline Approaches
July 21, 2014
Jack Cole
Seattle- A day after the Washington Nationals made a deal for Mark Texiera from the New York Yankees, the Phillies and Braves have also made moves to solidify their stance this season.
The Braves made a deal with the Baltimore Orioles to bring over a big bat in OF Nelson Cruz. Cruz, who was sought after by the Mets in the off season, is batting .262 with 17 HR and 47 RBI. He will add another power bat in the outfield, and will probably take time from BJ Upton, as he is batting below .220 on the year.
Nelson Cruz.png
In order to land Cruz, the Braves gave up 'A' prospect OF Adrian Castro. Castro is a 25 year old who has the potential to put up big power numbers, especially against left handed pitching. Poor speed limits him to the corner outfield positions, but the Orioles are all set at CF with Adam Jones. Castro is expected in the majors by the middle of next season.
The Philadelphia Phillies on the other hand are sellers at this time in the year. With virtually no chance to make the playoffs, the aging Phillies have decided to join the youth movement. Cole Hamels.jpgIn a deal with the Texas Rangers, the Phillies conceded SP Cole Hamels in return for a number of prospects. Hamels has been solid this season with a 6-6 record and 2.78 ERA. He should add a strong left arm to a Rangers rotation that features All-Star Yu Darvish. The Rangers are hoping to outlast the Oakland Athletics for the top spot in the AL West.
The Phillies landed three 'A' prospects for their long time lefty. 23 year old C D.J. Durango and 25 year old 1B Douglas Guerrero look to be joining the team in the next few years. Durango is batting .292 with 5 HR and 24 RBI in AA this season while Guerrero is batting . 276 with 7 HR and 43 RBI in AA. Guerrero, also a lefty, is hopeful to replace Ryan Howard in the coming years.
The prized jewel of the trade for the Phillies though is 18 year old P Jermaine Mullens. At just 18, the righty thrower is already in AAA and has solid numbers through 20 games. He posts a 9-5 record with a 2.66 ERA. He should have a shot to make the team out of spring training next year, and he should be expecting a September call up this year.
The wheels are in motion as we approach the last two months of the year.Comment

Leadoff Spot: Travis d'Arnaud
July 21, 2014
Jack Cole
Seattle- As customary, some days after batting practice I am able to sit down and catch up with one of our very own and chat about the season. Today I got a chance to talk with Travis d'Arnaud about the struggles of the team, and his personal struggles as well.
JC- Hey, Travis, how are you?
TDA- Good, Jack, thanks.
JC- First off I'm sure everyone wants to hear what the deal is with the team's recent slide. You entered July with a 51-32 record, and since you have only won 4 of 15. What gives?
TDA- Well I just think it's a lack of focus right now. We got a little too comfortable with our position in the standings. Washington is having a phenomenal year, so I think we settled with a wild card spot. At the time we had a comfortable lead, but now, what are we.. 3 games up? Yea, three games.
JC- Not to mention that you just got swept by the very team that is chasing you for that spot. What's your take on Noah [Syndergaard] since he was called up last month?
TDA- Oh, he's been great. I wasn't around the whole time because of my stint in Vegas, but from what I've seen he looks like the real deal.
JC- Speaking of.. What did you make of your demotion?
TDA- It was definitely deserved. I wasn't hitting the ball. I'm supposed to be the catcher here, and that position needs to produce. My production has been down, so they thought sending out there would fix my swing. I haven't really gotten the chance since coming back because Recker is playing so well. He's deserving of the at-bats right now. TDA strikeout.jpgTravis is hitting .174 with 1 HR and 20 RBI this season.
JC- Yea, he's swinging the bat well lately. What about [Starlin] Castro? What do you think?
TDA- He's a professional and he can really hit the ball. I'm sure Ruben [Tejada] is upset, but he's also a professional and understands that we need people in the lineup that can hit. Ruben and I are in the same boat right now. We got to make the most of our chances.
JC- I'm sure you will. Good luck tonight, Travis, I'll see you later.
TDA- Thanks, Jack.Comment

Mets Leave Bats In San Diego, Lose 4th straight
July 21, 2014
Jack Cole
Seattle- Mets turned to Matt Harvey (7-7, 3.08) tonight to put a stop to their losing streak, and he did his very best, but it just wasn’t good enough.
The Mets’ bats were just as cold as the Seattle air, as they managed only two hits all game. Those two hits seemed words apart as one came in the 1st inning and the second came in the 9th.
Harvey pitched well enough to win. After a rocky first few innings where he couldn’t find the zone, he settled in and was dominant until he was pulled with two runners on in the 7th inning. Harvey’s struggles began on his second pitch of the night when Willie Bloomquist took him deep. A few scattered hits throughout the next 5 innings allowed him to get to the 7th. He finished with 114 pitches, and was reluctantly pulled from the game. The move turned out to be the wrong one as the bullpen allowed their two inherited men on base to score.
The bullpen isn’t completely at fault as Daniel Murphy bobbled an easy double play ball that would have ended the inning. Murph’s bobble erased any chance Starlin Castro had of throwing out Bloomquist at first, and it allowed a run to score. The inning was extended and the Mariners plated another run to put the game out of reach.
It didn’t take much for the game to be out of reach. Chris Young (6-9, 3.80) was dominant as he finished with 11 strikeouts while throwing a complete game shutout. After a single by Curtis Granderson in the first inning, Young was untouchable until the 9th when Bobby Abreu doubled.
“I thought a change of scenery would change our fortunes. I thought wrong.” Terry Collins had to say after the game.
Mets tie their longest losing streak of the season at four and are looking as bad as they have all season long.
3 UP
Curtis Granderson- Single in the first inning.
Bobby Abreu- Double in the ninth inning.
Matt Harvey- Pitched decent enough to win.
(These are pathetic)
3 DOWN
Daniel Murphy- Two strikeouts.
Eric Young- Two strikeouts.
Anthony Recker- Two strikeouts.

Mets Lose 5th Straight Despite Strong Outing From Wheeler
July 22, 2014
Jack Cole
Seattle- The Mets entered Tuesday’s game winless since the All Star Game and desperate for a well played game. Zack Wheeler (10-4, 3.14) did his best to keep the Mets hopes of winning alive, but the long ball proved costly for Zack, and the bullpen let the game get out of hand.
Corey Hart started the second inning with a blast down the left field line. The lead didn’t last long as Chris Young hit his own home run to right center to tie the game at one. There wasn’t much else to speak of until the 7th inning, when Hart hit his second home run of the game, giving the Mariners a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
Juan Lagares did his best to keep the game tied when he fired a strike to home plate to throw out Dustin Ackley on a single to center by Jesus Montero. The Mets were still alive and they looked like they would get a chance to take a lead in the 7th. Chris Young stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs, but he was called out on a very controversial third strike call.
"Bulls***," Terry Collins said when asked about the call. The Mets lost their momentum and it only got worse from there, as Hart's home run shortly followed.
Wheeler’s day ended after that jack, and the bullpen couldn’t stop the bleeding. Josh Edgin gave up two runs and Jeurys Familia gave up a run of his own to give the Mariners a 6-1 lead. The Mets would add a run in the 9th, but it was too little too late.
Rookie, James Paxton (0-2, 5.59), pitched masterfully in a bid for his first win on the year. Unfortunately, Chris Young turned his lone mistake into a souvenir, and he left the game in a tie. Paxton gave up only three hits and had 6 strikeouts on the day. The Mariners staff as a whole had 10 strikeouts giving the Mets 21 between the first two games of the series.
DW & DM.jpegDaniel Murhpyand David Wright both entered today’s game batting 1/14 since the All Star Game. Those are hardly numbers that are going to get it done. Wright was able to add a hit, but Murph went hitless for his 4th straight game.
“I’m just not seeing the ball. I’m getting pitches to hit and just missing them. I’ll snap out of it,” Murph addressed his hitting woes after the game.
The Mets better hope both Murph and Wright snap out of it, and fast.
3 UP
Juan Lagares- Beautiful throw in the 5th to keep the game tied.
Starlin Castro- RBI in the 9th.
Chris Young- Home run to tie the game in the 3rd.
3 DOWN
Curtis Granderson- Three strikeouts on the day, giving him five for the series.
