Re: The Cardinal Way Part 3: Inception

Hey folks, I know its been a while but I wanted to drop in with a little good news.

I've finally adjusted to the college life and I now have a ton of time on my hands now that things have really settled down. As a result, I am considering a return to these boards and my old franchising ways.

There is some bad news though... well I guess it's only bad depending on your point of view. I tried to fire up my old Cardinals Franchise and apparently the save file is conspicuously missing; also, the flash drive upon which my backup file is also missing. This **** really grinds my gears because I loved my Cardinals franchise... It was really the first one that I've had a great time with from beginning to end. I've been trying to find a solution to this problem for about the past week and honestly, I've pretty much given up hope.

Needless to say, I don't think anyone has had this much trouble keeping a franchise running for an extended period time other than me... I'm not quite sure why the Show keeps giving me the finger every time I hit my stride. Skipping from franchise to franchise really, really sucks especially when you put as much time into it as me by playing all those games, making all the graphics in Photoshop and coming up with all the storylines.

I still don't have my PS3 with me at college but I now have the ability to come home on weekends because I live roughly 30-40 minutes away from my college so my PS3 is fairly available.

With all that said, I'm really considering 3 teams to do a franchise with. Right now, it's the Rangers, Astros and Marlins. I'm trying to find a team that has some decent pieces at present and that will improve with time. I've already thought of some potential story lines for each and I suppose I'll go ahead and lay those out right now.

Rangers- The Ranges have a nice team when they aren't injured. I'm not sure if it's World Series caliber but it's a contending team. They have some nice young players to build around like Elvis Andrus and Jurickson Profar as well as some intriguing veterans like Prince Fielder, Adrian Beltre and Shin-Soo-Choo. Their farm system is also loaded with toolsy athletes (my favorite type of prospects) such as Ti'Quan Forbes and Jairo Beras. As far as story lines go, I was considering structuring a story centered around the return of Nolan Ryan to the upper levels of management.

Astros- The Astros have traditionally been everyone's rebuild pick but they actually have some nice pieces that are ready for the major league level such as Jon Singleton and George Springer. They also have guys like Mark Appel and Carlos Correa among others climbing the ladder in the minor leagues. They also have some interesting storylines going down: The handling of Mark Appel, the leaking of the Ground Control documents, the Brady Aiken situation, angering other teams with usage of metrics, etc... I've always been fascinated by the thought of taking over Houston's rebuilding project and I think that any storyline would take a front office perspective especially when you consider how much Houston has going on in the front office. A rebuild of the Astros doesn't mean spending 100 million in free agency every year or trading for everybody and their mother... It'll be done the right way through the draft and spending big bucks will only happen when absolutely necessary.

Marlins- I really like the direction that the Marlins franchise is headed in. They have two superstars in Giancarlo Stanton and Jose Fernandez and they have a decent supporting cast around them with guys like Christian Yelich, Hech, Casey McGhee, Nathan Eovaldi and Henderson Alvarez. On top of that, I actually like their uniforms and their stadium is livable I suppose. Their system is loaded down with good pitching prospects like Andrew Heaney, Tyler Kolek, Justin Nicolino and Anthony DeScalfani. On top of that, there is plenty to write about with the Marlins: Their connection to Cuba, their embattled owner, their questionable baseball decisions... the list keeps going on and on. Much like the Astros, I think any story will focus around the Front Office but there's an outside chance something could be done with the ownership.

More than likely, I'll probably develop a new character if I decide to go the Astros or Marlins route because who wants to read about Willie Singleton a million times in a row, right?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated and I hope that anyone still out there will follow me on my next adventure.

I've heard that sound 3 times... once was Babe Ruth, the second was Josh Gibson, and the third was Bo Jackson- Buck O'Neil

All three would be very interesting. For some reason I would love to see the Rangers. Down team this year and I am sure you would make it interesting. Miami also sounds good.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Nolan Ryan backstory here on the forums. There's a lot of material to work with concerning the Rangers and J.D. being on the outs down here. So I'm voting Rangers. I think you could make it interesting.

Re: The Cardinal Way Part 3: Inception

When the news hit about Oscar Taveras I simply couldn't believe it. Partly because the person I heard it from cited MLB Memes twitter account but also because it seemed just like yesterday that Taveras was the on the path to becoming the next best thing.

This wasn't the way that it should've ended. The career of Oscar Taveras wasn't supposed to end in slow ride in a hearse by Busch stadium. No... The career of Oscar Taveras was supposed to end with a lap around Busch Stadium to the thunderous applause of grateful Cardinals fans. He should've been hailed for what he accomplished instead of what he couldn't accomplish. Instead of being remembered by a headstone, he should've been remembered by his plaque in Cooperstown.

His death hit me harder than you would expect. I had been following Oscar before he hit it big but my affinity for him grew seemingly overnight when I started this franchise. I wish I could say that his real life talents really tied me too him but that wouldn't be right. While I did appreciate his real life ability, it was ultimately this franchise that tied me to Oscar Taveras and the potential he had.

In his first season, I wasn't expecting him to play the way that he did. Frankly, I was anticipating Taveras having a solid, but not spectacular, first season. Needless to say Oscar blew the lid off of those expectations and he had the greatest season of any rookie in the history of the game.

He clubbed bomb after bomb after bomb and drove in run after run after run. At just 22 years of age, Taveras was already on the same level as the great stars of the game like Miguel Cabrera and Mike Trout. Everytime this kid stepped in the batters box, something you'd never seen before was about to happen.

Throughout the season, Taveras put on impressive displays wherever he went. At just 22 years young, Taveras was doing things that nobody in the game had the talent to do... nor the will to do.

That much was true when he hit for the cycle off of Clayton Kershaw, reigning Cy Young.

That much was true when he won the home run derby.

That much was true when he started for the National League in the 2014 All Star Game.

And that much was proven when he won the National League MVP, Rookie Of the Year, Hank Aaron Award and Silver Slugger.

I'm tempted to pick this back up. I uncovered the save file for this franchise in the Madden folder on my flash drive a couple weekends ago when I was cleaning it out. With that being said though, I don't know if that's the right thing to do; I don't know if it's the right thing to play several more seasons with Oscar Taveras let alone another game.

I'll appreciate the feedback if the community wants to give any but as of now, I'm not sure if that's the right thing to do. We know what virtual Oscar T. will become... We don't know however, is what the real Oscar Taveras would've done though had he played a full career.

Just like Nick Adenhart, Thurman Munson, Lou Gehrig, Darryl Kile and Roberto Clemente... We'll always wonder what Oscar Taveras could've been.

It pains me to see somebody with so much potential taken from this world so soon. Not only was he a great ball player but he was also a great kid who showed an unparalleled enthusiasm for a game filled with unenthusiasm.

              OT, you da real MVP...

That's the right way to end, just like this. (Playing another game was the first thing that came to my numbed brain.)

RIP Oscar, you'll live on in people's hearts/mind and memories.
