Re-birth of the USBL: Arthur Ramey & the Texas Comets (OOTP 14)

    Hello all!

I have been a big fan of OOTP for a couple years now and I love making and following a fictional league. The last 2 years I've managed a Milwaukee fictional team in the fictional USBL for over 40 years. But recently I had a corrupted game save so I was forced to start over.

What I did was create a new league with new teams (although I kept a few from the old league) and made nice team logos. I used a player from my old Milwaukee franchise as the new manager of the team I will be controlling, as you will see.

I will try to update as much as I can, so I hope you enjoy!

    Backstory & League Structure

USBL Re-Emerges with New Teams, Owners, Players
    BNN News

After a long 5-year hiatus, the popular United States Baseball League (or USBL) has announced that they will begin play again. The alternative professional baseball league once considered to be a competitor to the MLB has received a large influx of interested owners willing to put their money on the line in hopes of reviving the once-proud league.

After beginning play in 1969, the USBL gave smaller-market cities a team to root for and proved to be just as exciting and popular as MLB. But despite the initial burst of revenue and excitement, it became clear over time that MLB's hold on the baseball market was too strong. Team profits slowly declined and the league entered the new millennium on its last legs financially. Finally in 2009, the league's owners couldn't support their teams anymore and the league folded.

But the demand for baseball and the league was too strong, and new owners emerged to put together a new league under the same name. After many long meetings and voting sessions, the USBL has been re-born with 24 teams in a 2-conference structure. Listed below are the conferences, divisions and teams that will make up the new USBL:

    WESTERN CONFERENCE

    Mountain Division
    Boise Blizzard (Boise, ID)
    Cheyenne Mountaineers (Cheyenne, WY)
Las Vegas Gamblers (Las Vegas, NV)
    Olympia Stars (Olympia, WA)
    Pueblo Cougars (Pueblo, CO)
    Sacramento Turbos (Sacramento, CA)

    Southwest Division
    Albuquerque Caves (Albuquerque, NM)
    Austin Eagles (Austin, TX)
    Mesa Shockers (Mesa, AZ)
    Omaha Gaels (Omaha, NE)
San Antonio Shadows (San Antonio, TX)
    Texas Comets (Fort Worth, TX)

    EASTERN CONFERENCE

    Coast Division
    Bronx Shipwrecks (Bronx, NY)
    Carolina Critters (Greenville, NC)
    Charleston Titans (Charleston, SC)
    Delaware Ducks (Dover, DE)
Long Island Knights (Garden City, NY)
    Orlando Ghosts (Orlando, FL)

    Lakes Division
Baton Rouge Seawolves (Baton Rouge, LA)
    Columbus Sliders (Columbus, OH)
    Indianapolis Clippers (Indianapolis, IN)
    Nashville Naturals (Nashville, TN)
New Orleans Brawlers (New Orleans, LA)
Upper Peninsula Panthers (Iron Mountain, MI)

Each team in the league with play a full 162-game schedule. There will be no interleague play as teams strive for the playoffs. The only times teams from opposing leagues will play each other will be during the midsummer All-Star Game and during the USBL Championship Series.

For the playoffs, the division champions in each conference will square off in a Best-of-7 Conference Championship Series to determine who will represent the conference in the USBL Championship Series. The conference pennant winners will then play a Best-of-7 series in hopes of claiming the USBL Trophy as the league's champion.

Awards will be given out to the league's Most Outstanding Hitter, Most Outstanding Pitcher and Rookie of the Year for each conference. Each conference will then announce a team of Best Fielders, honoring one player from each position (P, C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF, RF) for their defensive performance.

The annual USBL Draft is held on June 15th each year and the league regular season schedule runs from April 1st to September 25th. Spring training begins February 1st and concludes on March 31st.

More information will be given later, especially team logos, owner profiles, top players & prospects and a preview of the upcoming season. Stay tuned!

Team & Owner Profiles - WC Mountain Division

      WC Mountain Division Overview
      BNN News

The USBL is releasing information regarding the new teams and owners in the league. Today, we are discussing the Western Conference's Mountain Division.

Alejandro Martinez has controlling ownership of the Boise Blizzard team. The Boise area's average-sized market and fan loyalty has media members skeptical of Boise's championship chances early on. Mr. Martinez is very demanding of success, but is known to be a bit of a penny-pincher financially. With a budget of only $85 million, he will have to make good use of every dollar in order to help Boise contend down the road.

Edgar Mendez is the owners of the Mountaineers, and his unmerciful patience is well-known. The above-average market size and good fan loyalty has the Cheyenne area excited for baseball. Despite being not very lenient with his team's expectations, Mr. Mendez is very generous financially and has a solid budget of $110 million to spend.

Maxwell Rogers is a very wealthy casino owner in Las Vegas who has always desired to own his own sports team. His dream came true as he was approved by the league board of directors to enter his Gamblers squad into the league. Mr. Rogers is very patient with team matters and very generous financially, so expect the Gamblers to be an annually contender. With an obvious rather big market size and good fan loyalty, the Gamblers will have the largest budget ($120 million) in the division and will likely have a financial advantage.

Vic Johnson owns the Stars, and the former Starbucks executive has found his niche in team ownership. The average market size allows Mr. Johnson to have a budget of $90 million, but the above average fan loyalty has folks excited. Mr. Johnson will be tolerant with his team's success but is expected to be a bit of a penny-pincher financially.

Marcos Ventura is a very demanding owner of the Cougars, but his charitable financial demeanor could be just what the team needs. In an above average market of Pueblo, $110 million budget, very good fan loyalty and arguably the league's top player on the roster, there is much excitement right now for this franchise.

The Turbos are one of few returning teams from the old USBL, but they are under new ownership from Carlos Martinez. Carlos Martinez is actually brother to Alejandro Martinez, the Caves' owner, but is much more lenient when it comes to his team's expectations. He is known as an economizer financially, but the Sacramento market is rather big and he has an $110 million budget to work with. The Turbos history remains with the fans, as their very good loyalty should push them towards the playoffs.

Team & Owner Profiles - WC Southwest Division

        WC Southwest Division Overview
        BNN News

The USBL is releasing information regarding the new teams and owners in the league. Today, we are discussing the Western Conference's Southwest Division.

Jake Gilbert owns the Caves and their dark, cool-color motif. He is an understanding owner and an economizer financially, which should bode well with their low $95 million budget. Despite residing in an average market, the Caves fan base is strong.

Nathan Price is the owner of the Eagles, and he is a lenient owner ready to maximize every dollar of his division-low $90 million budget by being an economizer. Austin's market is considered to be average, but their fan loyalty is very good.

The Shockers are another returning team from the old USBL, and they are controlled by Jorge Aguilar. The above-average market of Mesa, AZ allows the team to have a nice $110 million budget, but their fan loyalty seems to be only average. Aguilar will be lenient with his team's expectations, while willing to open up the checkbook and be charitable.

Ramon Hernandez is the unmerciful owner of the Gaels, as his championship aspirations are well-known and obvious by his drafting strategy. He is a bit of an economizer, but the rather big market of Omaha gives the team a $120 million budget to spend. The fans are ready for a winner in Omaha!

The Shadows return from the old USBL and Ramon Rodriguez will oversee the franchise. It's pretty obvious the San Antonio area is ready for a pro baseball team, because their extreme fan loyalty has already been on display. Their rather big market size will supply the team with an $120 million budget. Rodriguez will be understanding of his team's success, but will be an economizer financially.

We round out our division preview with the league's most profitable franchise, the Texas Comets out of Forth Worth. Arturo Ocampo is the team's owner, whose lenient patience and economizer financial style will allow the Comets to contend for years. Texas will have the largest budget in the league with $160 million to spend due to its very big market, while its extreme fan loyalty will likely lead to sold-out games throughout the season.

Team & Owner Profiles - EC Coast Division

          EC Coast Division Overview
          BNN News

The USBL is releasing information regarding the new teams and owners in the league. Today, we are discussing the Eastern Conference's Coast Division.

The "Lovable Losers" of the old USBL return for another shot at a USBL Championship, despite only reaching the USBL Championship Series once in its previous 40 years of existence prior to the league folding. The Shipwrecks are owned by long-time executive Beau Talley, who is still searching for that elusive title. Mr. Talley is lenient with team operations and charitable financially, which will hopefully allow the Bronx team to compete. The issue that the Shipwrecks face is the competition for attention and resources in the New York market. With a below-average team budget of $85 million and below-average fan loyalty, they will have to really fight to stay relevant.

The Critters have a lot of buzz around them, and owner Ernesto Trujillo has been promoting the team very well. In the above-average market of Greenville, NC and an excited, above-average fan base, the Critters will try to compete with an $100 million budget. Mr. Trujillo is very demanding but an economizer financially, so it will be interesting to see how fast they can contend.

The Titans will enjoy the rather big market of Charleston, SC and work under the largest budget ($120 million) in the division. Owner Rodrigo Dieguez is tolerant but generous financially, so expect the Titans to be a serious threat. With arguably the best fans in the division, there should be plenty of Titans news to keep up with.

The Dover market is excited for pro baseball, and their Ducks should be contenders right out of the gate. The above-average market size allows a team budget of $100 million, and their good fan base should make for a solid home crowd. Owner Eugene Hendrickson is notorious for his demanding patience, but as an financial economizer he will not spend any more than he has to.

The other New York-based franchise has a little more interest and buzz, but its location on Long Island has those fans happy to have a local pro team. The above-average fan base and above-average market gives the team a competitive $100 million budget to work with. Owner Pedro Fernandez is quite demanding, but he will be an economizer and make every dollar spent count.

Orlando's good fan base has the city excited for baseball, but the below-average market size leaves the team tied for the conference's lowest available budget ($80 million). Owner Donald Griffith will be an economizer and make that budget work, but he might need to relax his demanding personality.

Team & Owner Profiles - EC Lakes Division

            EC Lakes Division Overview
            BNN News

The USBL is releasing information regarding the new teams and owners in the league. Today, we are discussing the Eastern Conference's Lakes Division.

The first of two Louisiana teams are owned by Miguel Martinez, a tolerant but financially generous executive. The Baton Rouge market is considered average and the team will operate under a $95 million budget. The Seawolves will enjoy a good fan base excited to see pro baseball.

The Sliders will be guided under the lenient and financially generous hand of owner Juan Medina. The Columbus area seems to have an average fan base available, but the above-average market size will allow the team a $110 million budget.

The Clippers return from their existence in the old USBL, but this time they will be much more financially supported. Owner Jesus Aguilar will be understanding of the team's performance, but is expected to be an economizer. Although, the rather big market size of Indianapolis lets the team operate under the 2nd-largest budget in the conference ($120 million, tied with Charleston). The return of the Clippers has the fans buzzing, and the above-average fan loyalty is great to have.

Owner Stephen Baxter will run the Naturals team and use the Eastern Conference's largest budget of $130 million, making them a contender right away. Mr. Baxter will be understanding of his team's success, while being generous with the large budget. The most exciting thing about the Naturals is the extreme fan loyalty they have, which will give them a home-field advantage almost every time.

The second Louisiana team and natural rival to the Baton Rouge Seawolves will have to try and compete under the Eastern Conference's lowest budget ($80 million, tied with Orlando). With several other professional teams in the Big Easy, the Brawlers will have to fight for financial resources and attention. Owner Jose Aviles will be lenient and charitable to try and create a contender, despite the average fan interest.

The final team in the league is the northern-most one, operating out of Iron Mountain, Michigan. Owner Mario Mejia has done a good job promoting the team, and the Panthers will enjoy a very good fan base. Mr. Mejia himself will be lenient and charitable, but the below-average market in the U.P. gives the team only an $85 million budget to work with.
