2016 New York Yankees Season Preview

Aroldis Chapman and Gary Sanchez leave the field during an early spring practice

There is no team in professional baseball quite like the New York Yankees. Going back to 2009, they've gone to the playoffs five times, the ALCS three times, and won a World Series. With any other franchise, that's a fantastic run, for the Yankees however it feels, mediocre. In fact it feels much more fitting to put it this way, the Yankees have played in just one playoff game over the past three years.
That game was last year's AL Wild Card in which the Yankees were made to look old, and tired by the surging Astros.
The Yanks won 87 games a year ago, but that would have been their lowest win total since 1995 if not for 2013(85 wins) and 2014(84 wins).
So where in fact does the truth lie? Are the Yankees the juggernaut that haven't won less than 84 games since the year the The Mick died, or are they the middling club that last played in a playoff series in 2012? As usual the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

      The Lineup

      1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
      2. Brett Gardner, LF
      3. Carlos Beltran, RF
      4. Mark Teixeira, 1B
      5. Alex Rodriguez, DH
      6. Brian McCann, C
      7. Chase Headley, 3B
      8. Didi Gregorius, SS
      9. Starlin Castro, 2B

-The Yankees return in 2016 with virtually the same lineup as 2015, save for Castro. Acquired over the winter from the Cubs for RHP Adam Warren and a player to be named later, Castro, if anything, is interesting. Maligned in Chicago, Starlin led the NL in hits at 21, and then followed that up with two more strong seasons in 2011, and 2012. Since then it's been up and down for Castro, so how he fares is anyone's guess.
As for the rest of the lineup, it's more of the same really.
Rodriguez is 40, and struggled badly towards the end of last year. Teixeira is 36, and hasn't stayed healthy for a full season since 2011. Ellsbury was injured and awful, Gardner was virtually the same, and Beltran is 39 with bad knees.
There is some good however, switch hitting Aaron Hicks adds valuable cushion in the outfield, just as Rob Refsnyder does in the infield. Dustin Ackley is a nice bat off the bench, and Austine Romine is a backup catcher. Greg Bird's injury hurts the depth behind Teixeira and A-Rod, but maybe we see stud catching prospect Gary Sanchez this summer?

      The Rotation

      1. Masahiro Tanaka, RHP
      2. Luis Severino, RHP
      3. CC Sabathia, LHP
      4. Michael Pineda, RHP
      5. Nathan Eovaldi, RHP
      Alt. Ivan Nova, RHP

-Take out Severino from the above group and here are the ERA's in order: 3.51, 4.73, 4.37, 4.20,.5.07.
There's talent there, no doubt about it, and Severino is a good looking young players who had a 2.89 ERA as a rookie, but it's just so variable. Can Tanaka's elbow stay together? Can CC bounce back from a few bad seasons now that he's been through rehab? Can Pineda avoid a lengthy DL stint? The funny thing is, it's the same story as the hitters. There's a lot of talent, but a lot of downside as well. Arguments could be made that the rotation will be very good, and that it will be very bad. One thing we do know though is this: Without a strong season from the rotation, this team is going nowhere fast.

      The Bullpen

The unquestionable strength of the club. Aroldis Chapman(1.63 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 116 K, 66 1/3 IP), Andrew Miller(2.04 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, 100 K, 61 2/3 IP), and Dellin Betances(1.50 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 131 K, 84 IP) the Yankees may have one of the greatest three man back-ends in bullpen history, of course that won't happen however until Chapman is through serving his 30 game suspension.
The scary part is, they aren't alone. Chasen Shreve, a lefty, had a good season in 2015 and Branden Pinder wasn't bad. Expect Nova to be the long man, while Nick Rumbelow adds depth.
Overall expect this to be one of baseball's best bullpens. But, let's not overreact to the impact of the Chapman trade. The Yankees were 66-3 when leading after six, and 73-2 when leading after seven last season, they were already awesome.

      The Outlook

There's a lot of talent here, enough talent to win the World Series, but there are also so many question marks on the roster that a total implosion wouldn't be a complete surprise either. This may sound like a cop out, but I assure you it's not, anything can truly happen with THIS club, THIS year. My gut feeling is that the Yankees will be out of it by the break, dismantling their vaunted bullpen and selling off the pieces to the highest bidders. And although this may sound like heresy to most Yankees fans, it may in fact be just what they need to do. You see, sooner or later, everyone, even the Yankees, need to rebuild.

***Note, much of this preview was "borrowed" from the CBS Sportsline Yankees season preview.

Top 10 Prospects Of The New York Yankees

Yanks #1 overall prospect Jorge Mateo

        1. Jorge Mateo
        Position:
        Shortstop
        Age: 20
        Current OVR: 21
        Potential: 75
The speedy Mateo stole 82 bases at two Single A levels in 2015. Currently blocked by Didi Gregorius, but at 20 he has plenty of time

        2. Aaron Judge
        Position:
        Right Field
        Age: 23
        Current OVR: 24
        Potential: 77
The physically imposing Judge is on track to become the Yankees right fielder of the future, but he needs more seasoning.

        3. Gary Sanchez
        Position:
        Catcher
        Age: 23
        Current OVR: 21
        Potential: 71
Sanchez put together a solid minor league season in 2015, giving the Yankees the confidence to trade backup catcher John Ryan Murphy in the offseason.

        4. James Kaprielian
        Position:
        Right Handed Pitcher
        Age: 22
        Current OVR: 20
        Potential: 65
The 6'4 200 pounder features a four pitch arsenal including a mid 90's fastball, curve, slider, and change with above average command. Has potential to move quickly through the system.

        5. Domingo Acevedo
        Position:
        Right Handed Pitcher
        Age: 22
        Current OVR: 20
        Potential: 71
Dominican right hander went 3-0 with a 1.69 ERA and 1.08 WHIP last year for short-season Single A Staten Island. Avevedo's calling cards are his massive 6'6 242 pound frame and elite triple digit fastball.

        6. Domingo German
        Position:
        Right Handed Pitcher
        Age: 23
        Current OVR: 20
        Potential: 61
Featuring a low to mid 90's fastball, a mid 80's change and a developing slider, German had an impressive 2015 at Single A Greensboro where he went 9-3 with a 2.48 ERA.

        7. Ian Clarkin
        Position:
        Left Handed Pitcher
        Age: 21
        Current OVR: 20
        Potential: 73
Missed the 2015 season with an elbow injury, but returned to make six starts in the Arizona Fall League. His plus fastball and changeup give him huge upside.

        8. Bryan Mitchell
        Position:
        Right Handed Pitcher
        Age: 24
        Current OVR: 21
        Potential: 50
Mitchell has a plus fastball, and curveball that have scouts wondering when, or if, he'll put it together in the majors

        9. Rob Refsnyder
        Position:
        Second Base
        Age: 25
        Current OVR: 21
        Potential: 54
Solid hitter with average, at best, defense, Refsnyder is now without a spot following the acquisition of Starlin Castro.

        10. Wilkerman Garcia
        Position:
        Shortstop
        Age: 18
        Current OVR: 20
        Potential: 74
If everything clicks, Garcia has the potential to be a five tool player, with some scouts even giving him future average power.

****Quick note, the rating in this report are all based on a 20 to 80 scale relative to MLB level talent.

Re: The Bronx Bombers: An MLB 16: The Show Video Franchise

After realizing that the amount of time required to take this on was going to be far too great, even with quick counts enabled, I've decided to "change venues" so to speak, and play through this dynasty with OOTP 17 instead. By doing this I can give my full support to both baseball projects that I have going at the moment. Look for this to get underway by tomorrow.

A big thank you to Psyblast for editing the title of the thread! Another thing, thanks to OOTP's authentic rosters, the Yanks starting 25 and injury situation is a bit different than it would have been with The Show, so look for those changes in the 25 man roster, the (upcoming) injury report, and of course the season preview

                Cashman Signs 3 Year Extension

Brian Cashman will get at least three more years to fix the floundering New York Yankees.
The club announced today that Cashman's tenure as the Yankees GM would continue through the 2018 season.
Terms of the deal were not announced, but Cashman's previous three year deal was thought to be worth about $3M per year.
Cashman, now 48, was promoted to GM to replace Bob Watson in February 1998. His 18 year tenure is longer than any Yankees GM other than Ed Barrow, who served in the role for 25 years. Cashman has been in his job longer than every GM in baseball except San Francisco's Brian Sabean.
Barrow's Yankees teams went to the World Series 14 times and won 10 championships, under Cashman, the Yanks have won four World Series and 12 AL East titles, but since winning their last division title in 2012, the Yankees have been in exactly one playoff game, last season's 3-0 wild card game defeat at the hands of the Houston Astros.
With a complete rebuild probably out of the question, all eyes are now on Cashman, who must somehow find a way to accomplish a retooling while still being competitve. Asked about this very thing today, Cashman had this to say: "It hasn't been and isn't part of our DNA to accept that full blown commitment to a rebuild, that's not where ownership's comfort level lies. They much rather walk that tightrope rather than tear down and live to fight another day. The public stated goal is to get younger and compete, and we plan to do just that."

                  March 24, 2016

Yanks Come To Terms With Highly Touted Gutierrez

New York - Given a budget of just $3,000,000, the Yankees have thus far stayed quiet on the international prospect market, but with opening day just around the corner and several big named international prospects still on the board, the Yankees struck silently and seemingly out of nowhere this afternoon, announcing the signing of #2 rated prospect, 20 year old Cuban pitcher Vladimir Gutierrez for a reported $1.9M dollars. One of the top young pitching prospects to leave Cuba, and the 2013-14 Serie Nacional rookie of the year, Gutierrez features a solid low 90's fastball, a devastating plus curve, average change and good command, some scouts favor Gutierrez over fellow Cuban righty Yadiel Alvaraz, who signed a $16M dollar deal with the Dodgers in 2015. For now Gutierrez has been assigned to the Yankees international complex with a chance that he'll be promoted to rookie ball here in the States as early as this year.
With Gutierrez now off the board, there are just three top blue chip prospects left on the board, a recap of this year's international signings is below.

#1 SS Kevin Maitan - Los Angeles Dodgers ($4.7M)

#2 RHP Vladimir Gutierrez - New York Yankees ($1.9M)

#4 OF Lazaro Armenteros - Los Angeles Angels($4.8M)

#5 SS Gabriel Arias - New York Mets ($860K)

#7 SS Luis Garcia - Chicago Cubs ($6.1M)

#8 SS Freudis Nova - Unsigned

Sorry for the delay here, but during testing I noticed a few things that I didn't like pertaining to the enabling of expansion, and things of that nature, so I had to roll this back to the beginning. International signings have been updated, opening day should be up soon. Thank you for your patience.

Royals Overcome Cespedes, Mets En Route To Victory

Royals CF Lorenzo Cain carried a big stick

In the first ever opening day rematch of a World Series, it was the Kansas City Royals once again topping the New York Mets, overcoming a pair of home runs from Yoenis Cespedes on their way to a 10-5 victory on a cold but sunny day here in Kansas City.
On a day where Edinson Volquez was not at his best, the Royals needed their offense to come through, and come through it did, paced by CF Lorenzo Cain, who went 2 for 4 with a walk, a double, 5 RBI, and 2 runs scored, and RF Paulo Orlando who was 3 for 5 with 2 doubles, a homer, 2 RBI, and a run, the Royals racked up 10 runs on 13 hits on their way to victory.
For the Mets, LF Yoenis Cespedes was spectacular in defeat, going 3 for 4 with 2 home runs, and all five RBI.
                      In other opening day games....

                      Blue Jays 4, Rays 1
Jays starter Marcus Stroman hurled seven strong innings, LF Michael Saunders smashed a two run homer, SS Troy Tulowitzki added a pair of RBI sac flies, as the defending AL Eastern Division champion Toronto Blue Jays started the 2016 campaign with a 4-1 victory over Chris Archer and the Tampa Bay Rays

                      Pirates 4, Cardinals 2
LF Sterling Marte lined a solo homer, and scored three times, former Cardinal David Freese added two hits and two RBI, and starting pitcher Gerrit Cole allowed an unearned run on five hits and a walk while striking out seven over seven strong innings as the Pittsburgh Pirates opened the 2016 season with an impressive 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Tanaka Stong As Yanks Open Season With Win

Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka went seven strong to get the win

Two out RBI singles from Chase Headley and Carlos Beltran in the 6th ans 7th innings respectively gave the hometown Yankees just enough breathing room, as they held on for a hard fought 4-3 opening day victory over Dallas Keuchel and the Houston Astros here at frosty Yankees Stadium. On the mound, the Yanks got a strong start from ace Masahiro Tanaka, who allowed just two runs on six hits with zero walks and five strikeouts over seven. From there it was on to the duo of Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller, with Betances twirling a scoreless 8th, and Miller, despite allowing a run in the 9th, getting the save.
DH Preston Tucker went 3 for 4 with a double, a homer, 2 RBI, and a run scored for the Astros in defeat.

Yanks Take Two Of Three From Houston

                          After their opening day win.....

                          Wednesday April 6th, 2016

                          (0-2) Astros -
                          3
                          (2-0) Yankees - 4
Deadlocked at 3-3 with two outs in the bottom of the 9th, Astros closer Ken Giles unleashed a slider that didn't slide, and Yankees catcher Brian McCann made him pay, depositing the mistake pitch into the seats in right to give New York a thrilling walk-off 4-3 win in game two of their three game set here at Yankee Stadium. Using the long ball to great effect in this one, the Yanks got a three run shot in the 2nd from 2B Starlin Castro which at the time, gave the hosts an early 3-0 lead. Houston would battle back though, scoring a pair of runs in the 3rd on back to back RBI singles by Jose Altuve and Colby Rasmus off of starter Michael Pineda, who would eventually also give up the tying run in the form of a 7th inning solo shot from Preston Tucker, his second in two games.
Speaking of Pineda, he pitched well despite not being involved in the decision, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits with 0 walks and 8 strikeouts over 7 innings pitched. The clubs will wrap up the series tomorrow night with the Yanks Nathan Eovaldi squaring up with Houston's Doug Fister.

DH Preston Tucker had an RBI single, RF George Springer added a two run homer, PH Jon Singleton walked with the bases loaded, and a veritable army of relief arms took care of the rest as the Houston Astros avoided an opening series sweep by beating the Yankees by the score of 4-2 at Yankee Stadium. Despite lasting just five innings, starter Doug Fister was credited with the win, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and a walk with 4 strikeouts. From there it was Neshek, Sipp, Gregerson, Fields, and finally Giles, combining on four innings of scoreless relief, with Giles, last nights loser, earning the save.
