      JUNE 2, 2020 | CHICAGO, IL

A pair of two-run doubles by Steven Souza Jr. helped the Cubs earn a 8-4 victory over the visiting Baltimore Orioles Tuesday night at Wrigley Field. Souza finished the game 3-for-3 with 4 RBIs as the Cubs hold on to a slim lead in the NL Central division over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Jon Lester was solid through the first four innings but allowed a run in the fifth and two in the sixth as the Orioles were able to tie the game at three. Lester earned a no decision, allowing 9 hits while striking out just 4. Casey Sadler tossed a scoreless seventh inning and notched the win improving to 2-0 on the year.

The Cubs jumped out to an early lead in the first inning as they batted around, taking a 3-0 lead. Tied 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Steven Souza Jr. smacked his second two-run double of the game with the bases loaded to put the Cubs back on top. The Cubs plated five runs in the seventh to take a commanding 8-3 lead.

The Cubs wrap up the quick two-game set with the Orioles tomorrow as Kyle Hendricks (7-2, 4.03) takes the hill. Alex Cobb (1-8, 4.88) will start for the Orioles.

        JUNE 3, 2020 | CHICAGO, IL

Javier Baez cranked a two-run, go-ahead home run in the bottom of the eighth but Craig Kimbrel was unable to shut the door as the Orioles spit the two-game series at Wrigley Field Wednesday night with a narrow, 7-6 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Orioles rookie sensation Ramon Urias finished the game a perfect 5-for-5 including the go-ahead home run off of Kimbrel in the top of the ninth. Urias homered twice in the loss on Tuesday and is proving to be a likely candidate for the AL Rookie of the Year.

Kyle Hendricks allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out six but earned a no-decision. The Cubs trailed early as Hendricks allowed a pair of runs in the first. After falling behind 4-1 in the third the Cubs tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third and a two-run homer by David Bote in the bottom of the fourth.

Mychal Givens struck out the size for the Orioles in the bottom of the ninth to earn his 12th save of the year. The Kimbrel's blown save was only his second of the year as the hard-throwing veteran closer has converted on 15 of 17 opportunities in 2020. Despite the loss, the Cubs maintain their 1.5 game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the NL Central.

Thursday the Cubs begin a nine-game road trip. Jose Quintana (5-2, 3.75) will take the mound against the Reds who will send Sonny Gray (3-6, 4.48) to the bump. The Reds (32-30) currently sit in third place in the division behind the Cubs, who boast a 38-25 record.

          That's a tough loss.

Looking forward to the rest of your season.

          Have any trade deadline plans?

It’s going to be tough, if not impossible, for me to make a deal at the trade deadline because I just don’t have enough prospects to land a big name pitcher. It’s pretty certain I’ll be contending for the division at the deadline so dealing Bryant is likely out of the question as well.

I’d love to add an arm, as my pitching staff is chock full of mediocre starters. Hendricks is probably my best pitcher, and he’s nothing special.

I’d love a big-name starter but I’m unwilling to part with Nico Hoerner, Miguel Amaya, or any of my limited pitching prospects.

I recently signed some long-shot relievers to possibly help down the stretch, and Brandon Morrow might still be an option if he stays healthy in Iowa.

Great draft! How do their overalls look and who profiles as a starter or reliever?

(Love the prospect pics by the way! How'd you do that?)

Thanks. It took me a while to make the headshots. I used uniforms off of the vault and made a couple hats. Then used photoshop to splice my players and the uniforms for the headshots.

My #1 pick is a reliever, actually, the rest are starters I believe. Most of them are mid-60's already.

                      JUNE 5, 2020 | CINCINNATI, OH

The Chicago Cubs took a 3-1 lead against Anthony DeSclafani and the Reds in the top of the fifth but were unable to hold the lead as they lost their third straight contest. Alec Mills suffered the loss allowing three earned runs on two hits through 1 1/3 innings. The Cubs bullpen, which has been a sore spot all season has been responsible for the last four losses the Cubs have suffered and leaves major question marks as the team moves toward the All-Star break.

"We're all kind of looking for the right answers at this point," said Cubs first-year skipper David Ross. "It's never one guy and we win and lose as a team, so we've just got to figure out the right combination to use at the right time. Part of that falls on me."

Cubs starter Tyler Chatwood tossed just four innings, allowing one run in the no decision. Mills was masterful in his first inning in relief, striking out the side in order in the fifth but then ran into trouble in the sixth. Eugenio Suarez led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer, his 14th of the year. And things snowballed from there. After the sixth the Cubs trailed 4-3 and one inning later they found themselves down 7-3.

The usually potent Cubs offense was held to just five hits and struck out a season-high 16 times in the loss.

The Cubs will turn to Yu Darvish (7-3, 4.95) to right the ship Saturday. The Reds will send Wade Miley (2-9, 3.86) to the bump. Despite the loss the Cubs still sit 1.0 game up on the second place Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central division.

Ross really throwing his bullpen under the bus. Maybe deservedly so.

The Chicago Cubs may have found the solution for their bullpen woes in 2020. Just score enough runs to the point where it doesn't matter. While obviously this plan isn't something that Cubs manager David Ross will be relying on, it didn't stop the Cubs from pounding out 15 runs on 19 hits against their division-rival Cincinnati Reds in a lopsided victory at Great American Ballpark Saturday afternoon. The 15-3 win ended the Cubs three game losing streak.

The Cubs did not take long to start scoring, as Albert Almora Jr. blasted the first pitch of the game into the left field stands off of Reds starter Wade Miley. Miley completed just two innings allowing seven earned runs on six hits en route to his 10th loss of the year. Yu Darvish was solid through five, allowing just one earned run on five hits while striking out seven. Darvish improved to 8-3 on the year.

David Bote finished the game 4-for-5 with three doubles and five RBI's while Steven Souza Jr. went 2-for-5 including a three-run homer in the top of the eighth.

The Cubs are reportedly close to a deal that would bring Blue Jays closer Ken Giles to the North Side. Giles, who is a free agent at the end of the year, has had a difficult season in 2020 but a change of scenery could be just what the doctor ordered for the hard-throwing pitcher. President of baseball operations Theo Epstein did not comment on the subject but multiple sources are reporting a deal could be done as early as today.

The Cubs bullpen has been an area of concern all year and it is not surprising that changes may be in store. Details of the trade were not finalized but could include a starting pitcher as well as a prospect being sent to Toronto in exchange for Giles.
