Los DBacks - An MLB 20 Franchise Presented by BigJDotCom

    Preview_20

    Platform: MLB 20 The Show
    Rosters: TrueSim Roster V1
    Sliders: Armor & Sword & Marino’s Classic/Directional Simulation Sliders
Roster Control: 30 team control.....just because
Rules: This is a 30-team control story, but I will only be controlling the DBacks and checking in occasionally with the other clubs to make sure that they aren't doing anything goofy with their rosters. This is fiction, so I am not a control freak. I am going to try and keep the updates simple like I did in my 2019 DBacks franchise. Enjoy!

          MARCH 26-29: ATLANTA (2-2) @ ARIZONA (2-2)

          March 26: DBacks 6, Braves 3
          March 27: Braves 8, DBacks 3 (10)
          March 38: Braves 6, DBacks 0
          March 29: DBacks 2, Braves 0

The DBacks opened the season with a four game spilt against the Atlanta Braves.

In the season opener, the DBacks jumped on the Braves scoring five runs in the first inning on their way to a 6-3 victory at Chase Field. Madison Bumgarner pitched six innings, allowing one run and striking out seven in his Arizona debut.

Bumgarner (1-0) also had a day at the plate, going 2 for 2 with a single, double and walk.

Braves starter Mike Soroka (0-1) did not even make it out of the first inning as he lasted just 2/3 of an inning, allowing five runs on four hits. He walked three.

In the first, Starling Marte walked to open the game. He stole second and scored on a David Peralta RBI single. Eduardo Escobar, who also walked, scored on a Soroka wild pitch to make it 2-0.

Nick Ahmed hit a ground rule double into the pool to score David Peralta. Carson Kelly singled up the middle to score Cole Calhoun and Nick Ahmed to put Arizona up 5-0, quite the start to the brand new baseball season.

Atlanta got one back in the second on a solo home run from Adam Duvall, but couldn’t manage much else against Bumgarner. They would add single runs in the seven and eighth off of DBacks reliever Junior Guerra. Archie Bradley worked the ninth to pick up the save.

On Friday evening the Braves scored five times in the tenth inning to pick up their first win on the season, 8-3 over the DBacks. Ozzie Albies hit two home runs and drove in three runs for the Braves.

Arizona tied the game up in the eighth on back-to-back home runs from Christian Walker and pinch hitter Jake Lamb. But the bullpen just fell apart in extra innings. Kevin Ginkel (0-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings of work.

The debuts of Hector Rondon and Stefan Crichton were also nothing to write home about.

Ronald Acuna Jr went 3 for 5 with a double and two RBIs for the Braves. Their starter Max Fried was excellent, pitching six innings and allowing just one run on two hits. He struck out three and walked three.

Mike Leake pitched six innings for the DBacks, but he was knocked around pretty hard, allowing 11 hits, but only two runs thanks in part to three double plays. In all, the Braves totaled 19 hits in the victory.

On Saturday evening, it was the Cole Hamels show as he was magnificent in shutting down the high powered DBacks offense. He worked eight innings, allowing just three hits while striking out three and walking two.

He would get all the offense that he would need from Johan Camargo, who went 4 for 5 with a double and home run.

A Freddie Freeman RBI double in the first inning proved to be all that the Braves would need in this one. Adam Duvall added a three-run home run off of Robbie Ray in the third inning. Johan Camargo would homer off of Ray in the fourth to make it 5-0.

Ray (0-1) was not very good and had to leave the game in the fifth inning after taking a line drive off of the shin. He worked 4 2/3 innings, allowing five run son eight hits. He struck out five and walked one.

Torey Lovullo said afterwards that he was unhappy with his team’s plate discipline the first few games of the season. On Saturday evening they managed just three hits, all singles.

Starling Marte collected his first two hits as a DBack on Saturday evening, going 2 for 4.

In the finale, Luke Weaver pitched a gem as the DBacks managed to salvage a split with a 2-0 victory. Weaver pitched seven plus innings, allowing just three hits and no runs, while striking out six and walking none.

Stephen Vogt would give him all the run support that he would need with a solo home run to right in the fourth. It was his first on the year and came off of Braves starter Mike Foltynewicz.

Jon Jay would add a two-out RBI single in the sixth to give Weaver a two run cushion.

Archie Bradley came on in the ninth striking out the first two men that he faced before walking Marcell Ozuna, and gaving up a single to Travis d’Arnauld. But he would get Ender Inciarte to fly out to left to end it and pick up his second save.

Arizona (2-2) will host the San Francisco Giants (1-2) in a three game series to close out the home stand, starting tomorrow at Chase Field

            MAR 30 – APR 1: SAN FRANCISCO (3-3) @ ARIZONA (3-4)

            March 30: DBacks 3, Giants 2
            March 31: Giants 5, DBacks 3
            April 1: Giants 3, DBacks 2

The San Francisco Giants came in a took two of three at Chase Field behind some very good pitching and clutch hitting.

The DBacks took the opener behind a fantastic outing from Zac Gallen as they held on for a 3-2 victory over the Giants. Gallen pitched seven innings, allowing just one run and scattering seven hits. He struck out five and did not issue a walk.

Eduardo Escobar would put the DBacks on the board in the fourth with a two-run home run off of the foul pole in left off of Andrew Suarez. Tim Locastro would add an RBI single in the fifth to put the DBacks up 3-0.

Alex Dickerson hit an RBI double in the top of the seventh to get the Giants on the board. Buster Posey hit a bloop single in the ninth off of closer Archie Bradley to score Brandon Belt. Mike Yastremski drew a walk, and Alex Dickerson bounced out, moving the runners up to second and third. Bradley would strike out Mauricio Dubon to end the game as he earned his third save.

Ketel Marte broke out of his early season slump, going 3 for 4 with two doubles. Nick Ahmed continues to struggle. He went 0 for 4 and is now 1 for 19 on the year.

The Giants rebounded on Tuesday evening to defeat the DBacks 5-3 to put an end to their three game losing streak. The Giants hit three home runs in the first two innings to build a 4-0 lead, but things got dicey late.

Former DBack Wilmer Flores hit a two-run home run off of Madison Bumgarner in the first inning. Then Mauricio Dubon and Hunter Pence hit back-to-back solo shots in the second. Bumgarner would settle down after that rough start and ended up going eight strong innings, but still took the loss.

David Peralta went 1 for 4 with a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth.

Drew Smyly (1-0) picked up the win for the Giants. He went 6 1/3 innings, allowing just three hits and no earned runs. He struck out seven and walked two. Tony Watson pitched the ninth, giving up a run and stranding the tying run on base, but he did pick up the save. It was his second on the season.

In the finale, Brandon Belt homered in the top of the eighth inning off of Kevin Ginkel to send the Giants to the series win and get them back to .500.

Both starting pitchers, Mike Leake and Johnny Cueto worked into the seventh inning, allowing just two runs. Leake went 6 2/3, giving up two runs on eight hits. He struck out one. Cueto worked six plus innings, allowing two runs on just five hits. The Giants bullpen managed to shut the DBacks out with Tony Watson picking up the save. He made it interesting, hitting a Eduardo Escobar to open the inning before getting David Peralta to bounce into a 6-4-3 double play. Then he walked Jake Lamb, but got Ildemaro Vargas to bounce out to end the ball game.

Arizona (3-4) got a big afternoon from Starling Marte, as he went 3 for 4 with a single, double and triple.

Evan Longoria homered off of Leake in the first inning. It was the 300th home run of his career.

The DBacks finished the home stand hitting just .218 (27th in MLB), scoring just 19 runs in the seven games (22nd). Arizona will now hit the road for the first time in 2020, heading to Chicago for a weekend series with the Cubs and then heading to San Francisco for four games.

              APR 3-5: ARIZONA (4-6) @ CHICAGO (6-3)

              April 3: Cubs 7, DBacks 3
              April 4: Cubs 2, DBacks 1
              April 5: DBacks 4, Cubs 2

The DBacks dropped two of three in Chicago to kick off their first road trip of the year. Pitching has been very good so far, and if the hitting comes around, things should turn around.

The Cubs took the opener 7-3 thanks to a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh from Kyle Schwarber off of Yoan Lopez. Stephen Crechton gave up two base hits and walked a batter before giving way to Lopez. The first pitch he threw, Schwarber blasted off of the scoreboard in right field to break a 3-3 tie.

Chicago took the lead in the first inning when Anthony Rizzo hit a moon shot estimated at 477 feet onto Sheffield Avenue to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead. They would add two more in the third off of Robbie Ray. Kyle Schwarber doubled home Javier Baez, then Wilson Contreras doubled home Schwarber.

Arizona would get all of their runs in the fourth as Christian Walker hit a three-run home run to dead centerfield off of Jose Quintana.

Arizona continues to struggle at the plate early in the season, managing just seven hits on a rainy Friday afternoon.

The DBacks dropped their fourth straight on Saturday afternoon, falling 2-1 to the Cubs at a sun splashed Wrigley Field. The loss wasted another great outing from Luke Weaver as he tossed six solid innings in the loss.

Chicago would get all of their offense in the third inning. Jason Kipnis tripled and score on a Yu Darvish sacrifice fly. Kris Bryant then hit a wind aided home run that landed in the basket in the left field to make it 2-0. It was Bryant’s first in the year.

Arizona would get one back in the seventh as Kole Calhoun hit a two-out RBI double to right, scoring Christian Walker.

In the ninth, the DBacks would get runners to first and third, but Calhoun popped out to third base on a 3-2 fastball right down the middle to end the ball game.

Yu Darvish picked up the win, going 6 2/3 innings and allowing the one run on six hits. He struck out eight. Rowan Wick tight roped out of the ninth to pick up his second save.

In the finale, Zac Gallen dominated the Cubs, allowing just one run on two hits in seven innings of work as the DBacks salvaged the finale 4-2. Carson Kelly and Nick Ahmed both hit two run home runs as the DBacks snapped a four game losing streak.

Carson Kelly got the DBacks on the board with a two run shot off of Jon Lester in the second inning. Willson Contreras responded with a solo shot to left off of Gallen in the bottom of the second. That would be the only Cubs hit until a single to lead off the eighth inning.

Nick Ahmed, who has had a rough start to 2020, hit a two-run home run to left in the fourth to put Arizona up 4-1. He also flew out to the warning track in the sixth and lined out to third in the second.

Zac Gallen (2-0), acquired from Miami last season, lowered his ERA to 1.29 with another quality start. He went seven plus innings, allowing one run and two hits. He struck out three and walked just one.

Archie Bradley picked up his fourth save on the season, working the ninth. He did give up a solo home run to Javier Baez.

Last place Arizona (4-6) will now head out to San Francisco (4-5) for a four game series to end the road trip.

                APR 6-9: ARIZONA (5-9) @ SAN FRANCISCO (7-6)

                April 6: Giants 3, DBacks 2
                April 7: DBacks 7, Giants 0
                April 8: Giants 6, DBacks 4
                April 9: Giants 6, DBacks 3

The DBacks dropped three of four in San Francisco to end a dismal road trip at (2-5) which has seen the DBacks sink into last place in the National League West.

The Giants walked it off in the opener scoring twice in the bottom of the ninth to stun the DBacks 3-2. Wilmer Flores singled home Evan Longoria, then Mike Yastremski singled home Flores to send the Giants to the victory.

Arizona took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-run double from Christian Walker.

Mauricio Dubon had an RBI double in the second to get the Giants on the board.

Madison Bumgarner was brilliant in this one, working eight innings and allowing just the one run on two hits, both in that second inning. He struck out five and walked two.

Archie Bradley (0-1) blew the save, allowing the two runs on three hits, while getting just one out in the ninth.

Mike Leake threw a gem on a rainy Tuesday evening at Oracle Park, tossing a complete game three-hit shutout in a 7-0 DBacks win. Leake also went 2 for 4 at the plate with a two-run double in the sixth inning to help his cause.

Arizona jumped out to another early lead scoring twice in the first inning off of Johnny Cueto. David Peralta doubled home Ketel Marte and Christian Walker doubled home Peralta for the early lead.

Kole Calhoun added to the lead with a two-out RBI single in the fourth. He would hit a solo home run in the eighth to cap off the scoring.

Arizona tallied a season high seven runs and 10 hits in the contest that featured a 36 minute rain delay in the fourth inning.

Wednesday evening was a battle of bullpen arms as the Giants slipped past the DBacks 6-4. Trevor Cahill came on in the second inning for an injured Kevin Gausman and with 4 2/3 innings, allowing two run son three hits to pick up the victory.

The Giants jumped on Arizona’s emergency starter Merrill Kelly for four runs in the second inning. Alex Dickerson and Evan Longoria hit back-to-back home runs to get the Giants on the board. Brandon Crawford then lined a two-out single to left off the glove of a diving David Peralta to plate two more runs to make it 4-0.

Eduardo Escobar hit a sac fly in the third and David Peralta came through with a two-out RBI single to cut the Giants lead in half in the top of the third.

Mike Yastremski would hit a towering solo home run off of Kelly in the fifth and catcher Rob Brantley would add a big RBI double in the sixth as the Giants extended their lead back to four runs.

Arizona tried to rally off of reliever Trevor Gott in the eighth. Jake Lamb doubled to open the inning. He advanced to third on a single from Tim Locastro and scored on a wild pitch. David Peralta lined a two-out single to center to cut the Giants lead to 6-4 off of Giants closer Tony Watson. But Watson would get pinch hitter Starling Marte to bounce out to end the threat.

Watson then sent the DBacks down in order in the ninth to pick up his fourth save on the season.

Merrill Kelly got the start as Robbie Ray was unable to go with a sore shin from his last start. He pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing six runs on nine hits in a fairly ineffective start. A bit of good news out of the bullpen as Junior Guerra and Stefan Crichton both had scoreless outings.

In the finale, the Giants used a big third innings to secure a 6-3 victory over the struggling DBacks. The big blow was a three-run home run from Alex Dickerson off of Luke Weaver that gave the Giants a 6-2 lead.

Jeff Samardzija (1-2) picked up the win, pitching seven innings and allowing three runs on five hits. Luke Weaver (1-2) took the loss for Arizona although he only really had one bad inning of work. He lasted seven innings, allowing the six runs on six hits.

Jake Lamb, rumored to be on the trade block, has been the only guy that seems to be able to hit the ball for Arizona the first 14 games of the season, as he went 2 for 4 with a double, and home run. Manager Torey Lovullo said afterwards that he needs to find a way to get Lamb in the lineup more moving forward. Lamb is hitting .500 with two home runs and two RBIs so far in 2020.

Tony Watson pitched the ninth and after allowing the first two men to reach, he got pinch hitter Carson Kelly to bounce into a 5-4-3 double play before getting Nick Ahmed to fly out to the warning track to end it. It was Watson’s fifth save.

Alex Dickerson was the man for San Francisco on Thursday afternoon, going 2 for 4 with a double, home run and three RBIs.

The DBacks (5-9) return to Chase Field tomorrow as they host the first place Rockies (7-5) in a three game series that opens a eight game home stand. The final two games of the home stand will be in Mexico City against the Padres.

                  APR 10-12: COLORADO (9-6) @ ARIZONA (6-11)

                  April 10: DBacks 5, Rockies 2
                  April 11: Rockies 5, DBacks 0
                  April 12: Rockies 4, DBacks 3

The DBacks woes in 2020 continue as they dropped two of three to the first place Rockies to open up this eight game home stand. They are now five games below .500 after their first 17 games.

In the opener, the DBacks returned home and picked up a big 5-2 victory over the first place Colorado Rockies. Kole Calhoun hit the go ahead home run in the bottom of the seventh, it was his team leading third on the season.

The Rockies grabbed the lead in the top of the second on a Trevor Story solo home run to left off of Zac Gallen. But Arizona responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half. Zac Gallen looped a bases loaded single to right to score Carson Kelly to tie the game. Starling Marte then hit a sacrifice fly to put the DBacks up 2-1.

The Rox would tie it in the top of the seventh as Sam Hilliard hit a two-out double off the wall in left to score Trevor Story. That would mark the end for Zac Gallen after another strong outing.

Kole Calhoun then put the DBacks back in front in the bottom half with his solo home run to left. Jake Lamb had a pinch hit double and scored on a Ketel Marte single to give the DBacks some insurance. Carson Kelly would add another insurance run in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI double.

Archie Bradley came on in the ninth to close the game, but had to leave after just one pitch due to an injury. Hector Rondon came in and closed the game out to pick up his first save.

Notes: Archie Bradley’s injury appears to be a slightly hamstring pull, which will keep him out a few days but will not require a trip to the injured list.

On Saturday evening it was Jeff Hoffman tossing a gem as the Rockies shut out the DBacks 5-0. Hoffman worked 6 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and striking out 10.

The Rox would get all that they would need offensively in the fifth inning as Daniel Murphy hit a hanging slider from Madison Bumgarner into the right field seats. That three-run shot put Colorado up 3-0 and that is all that Hoffman would need.

Bumgarner (1-2) allowed four runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings of work. He struck out seven.

Jake Lamb, who got the start at first base, went 2 for 4. He had two of the DBacks seven hits.

In the finale, it was once again a matter of the DBacks being unable to get a clutch hit as they dropped a disappointing 4-3 decision. The Rockies hit three solo home runs in the game to win the rubber match of the three game weekend series.

Colorado took the lead in the second inning as Sam Hilliard hit a long home run to center off of Mike Leake to make it 1-0. Trevor Story homered in the third to give the Rockies a 2-0 lead. It was his sixth on the season.

Ketel Marte got in on the fun in the bottom of the third, hitting a two run home run to right-center to tie the game at 2-2. It was his second on the campaign.

Drew Butera hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the fourth to help the Rockies retake the lead.

In the fifth, Ryan McMahon hit a line drive off of Mike Leake’s leg for a single. Leake was forced to leave the game. Merrill Kelly replaced him, and gave up a solo home run to Charlie Blackmon in the sixth as the Rockies went up 4-2.

Christian Walker homered to left to open the bottom of the seventh to cut the Rockies lead to 4-3. Arizona had a great chance to tie or take the lead after John Jay doubled to left following a Carson Kelly single, but Ildemaro Vargas struck out and Tim Locastro lined out to right to end the threat.

Jake Lamb tripled with two outs in the eighth, but Jake McGee got Christian Walker to fly out to the warning track in dead center to get out of the jam.

Wade Davis worked the ninth to pick up his third save. Kyle Freeland (2-1) got the win, going six innings alnd allowing three runs on just four hits. Mike Leake (1-1) took the loss, going 4 1/3, allowing three runs on seven hits.

The DBacks will have tomorrow off as they welcome in the Pittsburgh Pirates (5-11) for a three game series beginning Tuesday evening at Chase Field.

                    APR 14-16: PITTSBURGH (5-14) @ ARIZONA (9-11)

                    April 14: DBacks 5, Pirates 3
                    April 15: DBacks 6, Pirates 0
                    April 16: DBacks 4, Pirates 2

The DBacks earned a much needed sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates to get back to with two games of .500 before their weekend series in Mexico City.

The DBacks took the opener 5-3 over the Pirates to snap a two game losing streak. David Peralta continues to mash, going 2 for 4 with a double, home run and two RBIs in the victory.

Both teams cored in the first inning as Josh Bell homered for the Bucs and David Peralta hit an RBI double. The Pirates would take the lead in the third as Kevin Newman bounced into a 4-6-3 double play with the bases loaded to score Luke Maile.

Kole Calhoun would tie it up in the fourth on an RBI double. He would score on a single from pitcher Junior Guerra. Guerra was on to replace an injured Luke Weaver who left in the top of the inning with back stiffness.

David Peralta and Christian Walker would hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth to move the DBacks in front 5-2. It was Peralta’s third and Walker’s fourth on the season.

The Pirates would get a run in the seventh but the DBacks bullpen locked down the win. Archie Bradley picked up his fifth save. Junior Guerra (2-0) picked up the win in relief of Weaver, pitching four innings and allowing one run on seven hits.

Ketel Marte went 1 for 3 with a double to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.

On Wednesday evening Zac Gallen dominated the Pirates, allowing just one hit over seven innings in a 6-0 victory for the DBacks. Gallen struck out six and did not issue a walk.

This one was scoreless into the sixth inning before the DBacks finally got to Chris Archer. Kole Calhoun walked to open the inning and advanced on a Zac Gallen sacrifice bunt. Ketel Marte singled him home to get the DBacks on the board. Christian Walker then doubled to right to plate Marte to make it 2-0.

The DBacks would add three in the seventh. The first was scored when Zac Gallen bunted and then beat out a double play to allow Starling Marte to score. Ketel Marte then hit a two-run home run to right to put the Snakes up 5-0. Starling Marte would add an RBI single in the eighth.

Ketel Marte went 2 for 4 with the home run and three RBIs. He extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

Zac Gallen (3-0) lowered his ERA to 1.30 and is turning into quite the acquisition from Miami at last year’s trade deadline.

In the finale, Robbie Ray had his best outing of the season, tossing 5 2/3 innings and allowing just one run on five hits as the DBacks won 4-2. Ray (1-1) struck out five while walking two.

After falling behind early, the DBacks responded with a big second inning off of Pirates starter Steven Brault. Carson Kelly singled to right to score Eduardo Escobar to tie the game at 1-1. John Jay then came through with a big two-run single back up the middle to give Arizona a 3-1 lead.

After the Pirates scored a run off of Andrew Chafin in the top of the eighth, David Peralta came through with a big two-out RBI single in the bottom half.

Archie Bradley was able to pick up his sixth save, pitching the ninth.

Ketel Marte saw his 11 game hit streak end as he went 0 for 4.

Arizona (9-11) will now head to Mexico City for a quick two game weekend series with the Padres (8-11).

                      APR 18-19: SAN DIEGO (10-11) @ ARIZONA (9-13)

                      April 18: Padres 3, DBacks 1
                      April 19: Padres 7, DBacks 6 (10)

The San Diego Padres swept a short two-game series over the Arizona Diamondbacks in a special series in Mexico City. The Padres rallied late in both games to pull out victories and send the DBacks back into the basement in the National League West.

The Padres took the opener in Mexico City, defeating the DBacks 3-1. Tommy Pham hit a three-run home run in the top of the eighth off of reliever Yoan Lopez, wasting a great start from Madison Bumgarner.

Arizona grabbed the lead in the fourth as Ildemaro Vargas bounced one to Fernando Tatis at short that he bobbled, allowing Vargas to reach first and Jake Lamb to score.

Madison Bumgarner worked into the eighth, allowing just three hits. He struck out eight and walked one. That walk was the first batter that he faced in the eighth. Yoan Lopez came on and gave up a single to Juan Larages. Tommy Pham then unloaded on a Lopez fastball, depositing it off of one of the signs beyond the left field fence to put the Padres up 3-1.

Kirby Yates would finish off the DBacks in the ninth, picking up his seventh save in seven opportunities.

In the finale, Manny Machado hit two home runs, including a two-run home run off of Archie Bradley in the top of the tenth to secure the sweep.

Arizona (9-13) looked poised to split the series, scoring four first inning runs off of Chris Paddack. Carson Kelly finished off the rally with a three-run home run to left.

But the Padres pecked away at that lead. Manny Machado hit the first of his two home runs in the fourth, blasting a moon shot over the scoreboard in left to cut the DBacks lead to 4-2.

Christian Walker homered in the bottom half of the fourth to make it 5-2. It was his team leading fifth on the season.

In the sixth, Manager Torey Lovullo may have stuck with starter Mike Leake just a little too long. Fernando Tatis Jr doubled home Tommy Pham. Then Brian Dozer doubled home Tatis to make it 5-4. Francisco Mejia then found the hole between first and second, allowing Dozer to score to tie the game.

Manny Machado would hit a two-run home run with two-outs in the tenth off of Archie Bradley to put the Padres up 7-5. It was hit to dead center and traveled an estimated 435 feet.

Arizona made it interesting in the bottom half against closer Kirby Yates. Nick Ahmed reached on a Machado throwing error. After Tim Locastro lined out, Ketel Marte singled to right with Ahmed advancing to third. Marte stole second. Jake Lamb then grounded out to score Ahmed. David Peralta then hit one back up the middle that Brian Dozer somehow got to and threw off balanced to get him by a step to end the ball game.

Kirby Yates allowed his first run on the season (unearned), but earned his eighth save. Archie Bradley (0-2) took the loss. The noise is starting to heat up to move Bradley out of the closer role and move either Yoan Lopez or Andrew Chafin into that spot.

The DBacks will now hit the road to take on Atlanta (13-11) and Cincinnati (13-8).

                        APR 21-23: ARIZONA (10-15) @ ATLANTA (15-12)

                        April 21: DBacks 11, Braves 3
                        April 22: Braves 4, DBacks 1
                        April 23: Braves 8, DBacks 7

The DBacks drop two of three in Atlanta, losing the finale in galling fashion to fall five games below .500.

The DBacks took the opener in Atlanta as they pounded out a season high 16 hits in an 11-3 victory. Arizona scored four in the seventh and four in the eighth to break a 3-3 tie and break their two game losing streak.

This one was back and forth through the first six innings as the Braves used the long ball to stay in this one as Johan Camargo, Travis d’Arnaud and Freddie Freeman all hit solo home runs off of Arizona starter Luke Weaver. For Freeman, it was his National League leading 12th home run on the season.

Arizona took the lead for good in the seventh on a Christian Walker RBI double. Struggling Nick Ahmed then hit a three-run home run to put this one on ice. Ahmed went 3 for 5 with the home run and three RBIs. He raised his batting average to .175 on the season.

Another nice sight was Eduardo Escobar went deep in the eighth inning. It was his second home run on the season as he also went 3 for 5 in the game with two RBIs. He has scuffled through the first twenty games and if he can return to his normal level of play, things should turn around for this team.

Luke Weaver (2-2) picked up the win, pitching six innings and allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked one.

The Braves bounced back on Wednesday evening, winning 4-1. Mike Soroka brought his “A” game, pitching six innings and allowing just one run on five hits. He struck out eight and walked one.

Former DBack and #1 overall pick Dansby Swanson got the Braves on the board in the second as he lined a two-out base hit to left to score Ender Inciarte.

The DBacks would tie it up in the since as Christian Walker singled home Eduardo Escobar. But the Braves came through in the bottom half with a huge two-out, two-strike RBI single from Travis d’Arnaud to give the Braves the lead back at 2-1.

Pinch hitter Nick Markakis would add a little cushion as he hit a towering two-run home run off of reliever Yoan Lopez in the bottom of the seventh to make it 4-1.

Sean Newcomb would come on in the ninth to nail down the win to even the series. It was Newcomb’s fifth save.

Zac Gallen (3-1) took the loss for Arizona, but he pitched well, allowing two runs on eight hits in six innings of work. He struck out six and did not walk a batter.

The finale was a home run fest with the teams combining for nine home runs as the Braves walked it off 8-7 on Freddie Freeman’s second home run of the game. The DBacks ralled in the top of the ninth, scoring five runs to tie the game at 7-7, only to lose it in the bottom half.

“This one is tough,” said manager Torey Lovullo afterwards. “We battled back and never gave up and we just came up short again. Seems like the theme to this season, so far.”

The teams exchange solo home runs through six innings with the Braves leading 3-2. Robbie Ray left the game and turned it over to Hector Rondon and the DBacks bullpen. Rondon got himself into trouble and get little help from his defense as Christian Walker made a mental mistake that led to a fielders choice. Johan Camargo then singled home a run to make it 4-2. Merrill Kelly came on and struck out Freddie Freeman, but then gave up a three-run home run to Ronald Acuna Jr to make it 7-2.

In the ninth, the Braves called on Mark Melancon and he was a gas can. He gave up a solo home run on the first pitch to Nick Ahmed. Starling Marte then singled and stole second. John Jay grounded out to move Marte to third and Kole Calhoun grounded out to second to score Marte to make it 7-4.

The Braves brought on closer Sean Newcomb and asked him to get just one out and he was not good. Ketel Marte tripled to right and David Peralta singled him home to make it 7-5. Newcomb then hung a slider that Carson Kelly hit into the left field seats to tie the game at 7-7. It was Kelly’s second homer of the game. Shane Green had to come on to get Eduardo Escobar out to send it to the bottom of the ninth.

Andrew Chafin, who has been the most reliable bullpen arm for Arizona this year, came on. He got Johan Camargo to fly out to left, but Freddie Freeman crushed a 1-0 slider into the seats in right to end the game.

Needless to say the DBacks will be thrilled to be leaving Atlanta as the explosive Braves had a big series against them. They hit 10 home runs in the three game series.

The loss dropped the DBacks to (10-15) on the season and kept them in the basement in the National League West. This was a team that many thought would be a contender in 2020. They now head to Cincinnati to take on the surprising Reds (14-10).

                          APR 24-26: ARIZONA (11-17) @ CINCINNATI (16-11)

                          April 24: Reds 3, DBacks 0
                          April 25: DBacks 5, Reds 1
                          April 26: Reds 5, DBacks 4

The DBacks absolutely fell apart in the finale to drop two of three to the mediocre Reds in Cincinnati. This season is quickly turning into a complete disaster.

In the opener, the DBacks putrid offense reared its ugly head again as they went 0 for 12 with runners in scoring position in a 3-0 loss to the Cincinnati Reds.

The Reds would get all the offense that Tyler Mahle would need in the third inning as Eugenio Suarez blasted a two-run home run off of Madison Bumgarner.

Mahle (1-0) came on in relief of Wade Miley after he made just one pitch and left with what appeared to be a blister on his middle finger. Mahle went five innings, allowing just three hits and striking out five, while walking two. The Reds used six pitchers in the shutout victory.

Madison Bumgarner (1-3) was the hard luck loser, pitching 5 1/3 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits.

Big offseason acquisition Starling Marte had another brutal game at the plate, going 0 for 4 and leaving 7 runners in scoring position in this one. He is hitting just (.158) so far in 2020 and manager Torey Lovullo said that after the game that Marte may be finding some time on the bench or maybe in Triple-A Reno very soon.

On Saturday afternoon the DBacks snapped a three game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over the Reds. Kole Calhoun went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs to help the DBacks snap the losing streak.

Mike Leake (2-1) continues to pitch well in 2020. On Saturday he kept the Reds off balance all day, tossing seven innings and allowing on erun on six hits. He struck out four. The lone run allowed was a Jesse Winkler solo home run in the fifth innings.

David Peralta put the DBacks up 1-0 with a solo home run in the third.

The pivotal moment in this one came in the sixth. With two outs and two men on, the Reds decided to intentionally walk Ildemaro Vargas to face Kole Calhoun. Calhoun made them pay as he lined a bases clearing double to put Arizona in front for good. They would add another run in the eighth on a Ketel Marte solo home run.

Reds starter Luis Castillo was excellent. He pitched five innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out nine. The problem was he threw 97 pitches and was gassed. The Reds bullpen could not nail this one down, but the Reds did strike out 14 DBacks hitters.

Notes: Jake Lamb left the game with an injury in the bottom of the seventh. He dove for a ball at third, landing awkwardly on his arm. X-rays after the game showed Lamb fractured his forearm and will likely miss four to eight weeks. He will go to the injured list. Reliever Jimmy Sherfy was recalled from Triple-A Reno.

Lamb got the start at third base on Saturday as manger Torey Lovullo had his first lineup this season with Lamb, Eduardo Escobar (LF) and Christian Walker (1B) all in the lineup. It was an attempt to get all three players into a lineup that has struggled so far in 2020. Kevin Cron was recalled from Triple-A Reno to replace him.

In the finale, the DBacks blew a 4-1 lead to fall 5-4 and fall a season high six games below .500. Jesse Winker, aka the DBacks killer, hit two more home runs and drove in four runs in the Reds victory.

Arizona built a 4-1 lead after four innings thanks to the long ball. Christian Walker, David Peralta and Ildemaro Vargas all hit home runs off of starter Trevor Bauer to stake the DBacks to the lead.

Luke Weaver was cruising along in this one, until the fifth. After getting the first two outs of the inning, he issued a controversial walk to Shogo Akiyama on a pitch that looked like it was right down the middle. Eugenio Suarez then singled off the glove of Christian Walker. Jesse Winker then worked an 11 pitch at-bat, and on the 12th pitch hit a home run to right off of the foul pole. Incredibly bad luck for Arizona and the very fortunate Reds had tied the game at 4-4.

In the seventh, Winker again came up with two-outs, and this time hit a ball just above his feet over the wall in center to give the Reds the lead, on an 0-2 pitch from Stefan Crichton. It was Winker’s ninth on the year and sent the Reds to victory.

Arizona would have their chances late but could not capitalize. Christian Walker struck out with two-men to end the eighth. Then the DBacks got both Ildemaro Vargas and Tim Locastro on to open the ninth. Kole Calhoun struck out on a called third strike that looked to be out of the strike zone on a full count. Nick Ahmed then hit a hanging curveball all the way to the wall in dead center for out two, before Ketel Marte bounced out to short to end the game.

“Just another game where our opponents get clutch hits and we don’t,” said Manager Torey Lovullo afterwards. “Look back at this season and that is the story. In big situations, we can’t get outs from out pitchers and we don’t come through at the plate. We are in position to win, but we don’t seem to have that clutch factor.”

Last-place Arizona (11-17) now returns home to host Houston (12-16) and the Chicago Cubs (20-8).

                            DBacks Shake Things Up

                            Ray_Trade_20

Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks have decided that they needed to shake things up after a slow start and Monday afternoon they shipped starting pitcher Robbie Ray to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for two prospects.

The DBacks added the 22-year-old flame throwing starting pitching prospect Jhoan Duran from the Twins along with 23-year-old utility infielder Travis Blankenhorn.

Taking Ray’s spot in the rotation will likely be 24-year-old Jon Duplantier. He was (0-1) with an ERA of 1.86 in three starts for Triple-A Reno in 2020. Duran and Blankenhorn will both go to Double-A Jackson. Duran was (3-0) with an ERA of 0.99 in three starts in Double-A so far this year.

Duran was a piece in the 2018 trade in which the DBacks acquired Eduardo Escobar, and he now returns to the organization that drafted him.

                              APR 28-29: HOUSTON (13-17) @ ARIZONA (12-18)

                              April 28: DBacks 5, Astros 4 (10)
                              April 29: Astros 6, DBacks 4

The struggling DBacks split a quick two game series with the Houston Astros at Chase Field.

The DBacks dug down deep in the opener and rallied from an early 3-0 hole and some questionable calls to edge the Astros 5-4 in ten innings on Tuesday evening. Nick Ahmed singled made Christian Walker with the game winner as the DBacks opened the home stand with a victory.

The Astros jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Yordan Alvarez hit a three-run bomb off of emergency starter Merrill Kelly. Kelly got the spot start after Zac Gallen felt discomfort in his back during pregame warm ups.

In the second inning, Ketel Marte singled home Starling Marte to get the DBacks on the board. Nick Ahmed then tied the game in the third with a two-run home run into the pool area.

The DBacks would take the lead in the seventh on an unearned run as David Peralta hit an RBI single with the bases loaded following an error from Jose Altuve that kept the inning alive.

But the Astros would get that back in the top of the eighth off of Yoan Lopez as Alex Bregman hit a sacrifice fly to center after Michael Brantley tripled to open the inning.

That setup the DBacks to win it in the 10th on Ahmed’s line drive single back up the middle. It was his fourth hit of the ball game and third RBI. Ahmed has had a rough start to 2020, but has been seeing the ball better lately and it shows.

On Wednesday afternoon the Astros jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the fifth inning, then hung on late for a 6-4 victory over the DBacks to split the short two game series. George Springer went deep twice off of Jon Duplatier. He also added a double and drove in two runs to help pace the Astros.

Jon Duplantier, making his 2020 debut, did not fare well in this one, allowing six runs on nine hits in five innings of work in taking the loss.

The Astros jumped all over Duplantier in the fourth inning, scoring five times as they batted around. Alex Bregman hit a two-run home run to get the Astros on the board. George Spring followed immediately with a solo home run to left. Martin Maldonado capped the inning with a two-run double.

Springer homered again in the fifth to make it 6-0.

But this Arizona team showed some heart, chipping away at that Astros lead with single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh. Nick Ahmed then opened the ninth with a solo home run to cut it to 6-4. Starling Marte singled to bring the tying run to the plate. But closer Joe Smith got Ildemaro Vargas to strike out and got Ketel Marte to fly out on a spectacular catch by George Springer, crashing into the center field wall to end the ball game.

Christian Walker hit his team leading seventh home run in the losing effort as he went 3 for 4.

Arizona (12-18) will now host the Chicago Cubs (21-10) in a four game weekend series to close out the home stand beginning tomorrow evening.
