Cone handcuffs Mariners; Yankees seize 1-0 advantage in ALCS

Much like he did way back on Opening Day, David Cone baffled the Mariners all night long, giving up only two hits in the Yankees 3-1 victory in Game 1 of the ALCS.

Cone was very effective all night long, his only blemish being a solo homer by Dan Wilson in the fifth inning. Cone gave up one run on two hits, walking two and striking out six over seven innings of work. Cone only needed 85 pitches to get through those seven innings.

The closest the Mariners came to even putting Cone under threat was in the seventh inning when Paul Sorrento got the second hit of the night for the Mariners. But, Joey Cora grounded into an inning-ending double play. Mariano Rivera pitched two innings of perfect relief to nail down his first save of the postseason.

Randy Johnson gave up three runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out seven over 7 and 1/3 innings of work in a losing effort.

Wilson blasts Yankees, Mariners take Game 2 11-4

The Mariners chased Yankees' starter Andy Pettite out of the game in the fourth inning as the Mariners hammer the Yankees 11-4 in front of a stunned crowd at Yankees Stadium.

Pettite's postseason struggles continued, as he gave up seven runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out three over 3 and 1/3 innings of work. Every Mariner, except Ken Griffey, Jr. who went 0 for 5, collected at least one hit.

Joey Cora and Dan Wilson were the main drivers of the Mariners' offense. Cora collected two hits on the day, scoring a run and collecting three RBIs. Wilson collected three hits and four RBIs, including a two-run homer in the seventh inning.

Jeff Fassero picked up his first victory in the postseason, giving up four runs on ten hits, walking three, and striking out six in 6 and 2/3 innings of work.

Road win lifts Yankees to 2-1 lead in ALCS

The Yankees jumped all over Jamie Moyer in the first inning, which is all they would need as David Wells kept the Mariners off balance en route to a 5-2 victory over the Mariners in Game 3.

Moyer had a rough first inning, thanks to an error, two hits, and a walk. Unfortunately for Moyer, all of those base runners ended up scoring, the exclamation point being Paul O'Neill's two-run blast to make it 4-0.

Moyer would pick up the loss, giving up five runs (two earned) on three hits, walking three, and striking out six over seven innings of work for his first loss of the postseason.

Wells was solid, giving up two runs on eights hits, walking two, and striking out five over seven innings of work to pick up his first win in the postseason. Mariano Rivera pitched two innings of one-hit relief to grab his second save of the postseason.

Game four would see both have to go to their bullpens as neither starter made it out of the fourth inning. Yankees starter Eric Milton would give up six runs on nine hits, striking out one in 3 and 2/3 innings of work. Mariners starter Omar Olivares would give up six runs (three earned) on eight hits, walking two and striking out two over 3 and 2/3 innings of work. Neither starter would factor into the decision.

Both bullpens were able to stop the bleeding. Heathcliff Slocumb, who blew two saves in the Twins series, was able to drop his ERA from 18.00 down to 10.50 after working three innings of relief, but he still gave up the go-ahead run in the tenth inning. Mariano Rivera pitched two innings of dominating relief in the eighth and ninth innings, striking out four of the six hitters he faced.

With the Yankees grabbing the lead in the tenth, they turned to Ramiro Mendoza to nail down the save, but he was unable to pitch around a Derek Jeter error and the Mariners were able to tie the game back up. In the 12th inning, the Yankees lit up Mike Timlin, who had come in during the 11th inning and had pitched five scoreless innings of relief this postseason.

The Yankees put up a three-spot in the inning, and Mendoza came back out for the 12th inning and pitched a 1-2-3 inning to put the Mariners away.

Martinez, Griffey stave off elimination in 7-5 victory

Edgar Martinez slugged two homers and drove in four runs while Ken Griffey, Jr. hit the go-ahead single in the 7th inning that gave the Mariners a 7-5 victory, forcing a trip back to Yankee Stadium for Game 6.

In a rematch of Game 1, neither David Cone nor Randy Johnson was at their best today. Cone gave up seven runs on seven hits, walking four and striking out eight in 6 and 2/3 innings pitched in a losing effort. Johnson gave up four runs on seven hits, walking four and striking out six in 6 and 1/3 innings pitched in a no-decision.

Considering the gravity of the situation, Lou Pinella brought in his slated Game 6 starter Jeff Fassero to relieve the Big Unit in the seventh inning. Fassero allowed his two inherited runs to score to tie the game up and wasn't very effective in relief. However, he didn't allow the Yankees to score any more runs and got credited with the win out of the bullpen.

The Mariners did not go to Heathcliff Slocumb for the save, whether that was because of rest or ineffectiveness, Pinella did not go into detail. Youngster Brian Sweeney came in and immediately served up a lead-off homer to Derek Jeter to cut the lead to two. The kid though followed that up by striking out Bernie Williams, getting Tino Martinez to pop out in the infield, and then struck out Mike Stanley to put an exclamation point on the Game 5 victory.

    A wild crazy Game 6

After the decision to use Jeff Fassero in relief in Game 5, manager Lou Pinella had a dilemma. Either pitch Jamie Moyer on short rest after his Game 3 loss or go to rookie Joe Mays to make a start in a potential clinch game for the Yankees at a sold out Yankee Stadium.

Pinella went to the kid. The Yankees countered with Andy Pettite, hoping to rebound from his last start. Neither pitcher made it out of the fifth inning, nor factored into the decision.

Mays gave up six runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out three in 4 and 1/3 innings pitched. Pettite gave up six runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out three in 4 and 1/3 innings pitched.

Heading into the eighth inning, the Yankees were clinging to an 8-7 lead and brought in the Sandman to nail it down. Mariano Rivera had been the workhorse of the Yankees bullpen all through the playoffs. The top of the Mariners order finally got to him, to the tune of four straight hits. Alex Rodriguez singled, Joey Cora doubled, Edgar Martinez knocked both of them in, and then Ken Griffey, Jr. cleared the bases with one of his patented line-drive homers to give the Mariners an 11-8 lead.

Unfortunately for the Mariners, they turned to Heathcliff Slocumb. And all fans could ask, was what happened to Slocumb. After the Mariners acquired him at the deadline from Boston, Slocumb was a solid piece for the Mariners bullpen. The postseason has been a complete nightmare, and Game 6 was no different.

Slocumb was unable to record an out, served up two homers, and the Yankees forced the game into extra innings. With two outs in the tenth inning and Chad Curtis sitting at second base, Bernie Williams jumped on the first pitch and flared one out to right field just beyond Cora's glove. Curtis beat Jay Buhner's throw to home, and the Yankees in walk-off fashion will advance to the World Series.

Dodgers edge Marlins 3-2 to open NLCS

Hideo Nomo did it all for the Dodgers tonight. Not only did he shut down the Marlins lineup, but he provided the key RBI single in the fifth inning that secured the victory for the Dodgers in Game 1 at Pro Player Stadium.

Nomo gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits, walking two and striking out six over seven innings of work in the winning effort as the Dodgers steal home-field advantage away from the Marlins.

Kevin Brown had a quality start, but the Marlins bats did not show up. Brown gave up three runs on six hits, striking out four over seven innings of work.

Los Angeles tops Florida again, take 2-0 lead in NLCS

The Dodgers pitching staff continued to punch above its weight tonight. Not saying that the Dodgers staff is bad, as the Dodgers ranked fourth in the league in runs allowed. But they outdueled the number two staff in the National League in the NLDS, and they are currently outdueling the number one staff here in the NLCS.

Chan Ho Park rebounded from his not-so-good NLDS start to baffle Marlins hitters all night long as Eric Young scored all three times he got on base from the lead-off spot as the Dodgers take Game 2 by a final score of 5-1.

Park gave up one run on six hits, walking one and striking out seven over 6 and 2/3 innings of work to get his first win of the postseason. Ramon Martinez, Darren Dreifort, and Scott Radinsky combined for 2 and 1/3 innings of perfect relief to nail down the game.

Al Leiter struggled to keep the Dodgers off the basepaths, giving up four runs on nine hits over seven innings of work in the losing cause. Leiter walked two and struck out six hitters.

Dodgers win 5-4, extend NLCS advantage to 3-0

This series is definitely not going the way the pundits thought. The Marlins were the preseason favorites to win the World Series. The Marlins came into the playoffs with the best record in the National League. The Marlins swept the Pirates in the NLDS.

And now the Marlins find themselves one game from elimination.

Dodgers' rookie left-hander Ted Lilly had a standout performance, giving up two runs on four hits over seven innings of work as the Dodgers are now one win away from their first trip to the World Series since 1988.

Raul Mondesi, who was non-existent in the NLDS, is suddenly finding his playoff sea legs here in the NLCS. Mondesi barreled up an Alex Fernandez fastball that resulted in a two-run homer, giving the Dodgers the 2-1 lead.

Fernandez had to pitch around a lot of trouble, including three errors by the Marlins defense. While he was able to pitch around all three, the additional batters began to add up. Fernandez gave up five runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out six over 5 and 1/3 innings of work in a losing effort.

The Marlins did threaten in the ninth after scoring two runs on Dodgers closer Todd Worell. The Dodgers turned to knuckleballer Tom Candiotti, who needed eight pitches to end the threat and send the Dodger Stadium faithful home happy.

Valdez shuts down Marlins, Dodgers advance to World Series

There is not a lot to say about today's game. The Dodgers finally turned to their ace in Game 4, and Ismael Valdez did not disappoint.

Valdez shut out the Marlins over 8 and 1/3 innings of work, scattering three hits, walking one and striking out six as the Dodgers advance to the World Series with a 5-0 victory over the Florida Marlins.

Livan Hernandez, who didn't get the chance to start in the NLDS, showed that he hadn't pitched in a game in two weeks. The Dodgers jumped all over him in the first inning, and that was all she wrote. Hernandez gave up four runs on six hits, walking four and striking out three over 5 and 2/3 innings of work in the losing effort.

The Marlins did threaten in the ninth, with Valdez hitting a batter and giving up a base hit. With one out and two on, the Dodgers brought in Tom Candiotti, who got Gary Sheffield to ground into the series ending 6-4-3 double play.

The key takeaway from this series was the Dodgers pitching completely shutting down the Marlins' bats. The Marlins ran the same lineup out for all four games. Seven of the eight hitters in that lineup hit .235 or below.

Wells handcuffs Dodgers, Yankees seize 1-0 advantage

Veteran lefty David Wells built upon his start in the ALCS against the Mariners by completely shutting down the Dodgers. Wells threw seven innings of six-hit ball, giving up one run and striking out five in the Yankees 5-1 victory.

The Yankees offense was paced by Tino Martinez and Paul O'Neill. O'Neill reached base on all five plate appearances, including a double and two runs batted in. Martinez collected three hits in five plate appearances, knocking in three runs.

Ismael Valdez picked up his first loss of the postseason, giving up three runs on nine hits over five innings of work. He walked two and struck out five.

Williams, Yankees sink Dodgers again in Game 2

Riding the three-hit performance of center fielder Bernie Williams, the New York Yankees took both games of the series at Dodger Stadium, picking up a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 2 of the World Series. Williams was three for four with a home run, as well as scoring two runs. It was Williams' solo shot in the 7th inning that proved to be the deciding factor in the game.

David Cone turned in the quality start, giving up three runs on seven hits across seven innings of work for his third win of the postseason. Cone walked two and struck out six hitters over 116 pitches.

Hideo Nomo was solid, giving up three runs (one earned) on seven hits across five innings of work for his first loss of the postseason. Nomo walked one and struck out six over 83 pitches before being lifted for a pinch hitter.

Mariano Rivera was brought in during the eighth inning to get the Yankees out of a jam but failed to perform a double-switch. Rather than having him hit in the ninth, the Yankees turned to Ramiro Mendoza in the bottom of the inning. Mendoza sat the Dodgers down in order to record his first save of the postseason.

Dodgers break through in Game 3, series at 2-1

After losing both games at home, the Dodgers found themselves on the ropes with the series shifting to New York. A pitcher's duel between Andy Pettite and Chan Ho Park would break out in Game 3, in what proved to be an exciting affair.

The Yankees jumped on Park in the first inning, quickly jumping out to a 2-0 lead following a two-run double by Mike Stanley. But Park would settle down and shut the Yankees down. Park would give up two runs on five hits over 6 and 2/3 innings of work in the no-decision. Park worked around three walks and struck out five hitters.

Pettite, who has struggled all postseason, finally pitched as he did during the regular season. Pettite gave up three runs (one earned) on seven hits over eight innings of work but left the game trailing 3-2. Pettite was able to work around three walks and struck out four hitters.

With the Dodgers clinging to a 3-2 lead, they brought in closer Todd Worrell in the eighth inning to close out the game. Worrell stranded two runners in the eighth but gave up the game-tying homer to Chad Curtis in the ninth.

The Yankees turned to Mariano Rivera in the tenth inning to maintain the tied game. Rivera got the first two hitters, but Bernie Williams lost a ball in the lights in centerfield and dropped what should've been an easy third out. The Dodgers took complete advantage of this as Otis Nixon ripped a line drive to the left-center gap, scoring Mike Piazza to give the Dodgers the lead.

Mark Guthrie would come in to complete the task, setting the Yankees down in order to pull the Dodgers back into the series.

Dodgers clip Yankees 4-3 in Game 4; series tied 2-2

It's a series that a home team has not won yet, and the Dodgers kept that trend up in Game 4. In a sign of what was to come, Eric Milton was unable to pitch around Wade Boggs' error at third base on the very first batter of the game. The Dodgers plated three runs in the inning and never looked back.

Ted Lilly scattered nine hits across 6 and 1/3 innings of work, giving up three runs in the winning effort. He worked around three walks and struck out four as the Yankees couldn't string enough hits together to blow the game open.

Milton gave up four runs (one earned) on six hits across six innings of work for his first loss in the postseason. He walked four hitters and struck out three in the losing cause.

Both bullpens shut the opposing offenses down. However, the Yankees were given some slight hope, as Derek Jeter got a base hit in the ninth, his fourth of the day. Scott Radinsky was able to get Bernie Williams to ground into the game-ending 6-4-3 double play for his second save of the postseason.

Dodgers bullpen implodes; Yankees take pivotal Game 5

He may have only got one hit in his six plate appearances, but that one hit was the difference in the game. Chad Curtis was the walk-off hero today, as his run-scoring single in the ninth inning capped off the four-run ninth inning that allowed the Yankees to become the first home team in this series to win a game. The 8-7 victory gave the Yankees a pivotal Game 5 victory as the series shifts back to Los Angeles.

It didn't start that way for the Yankees. The Dodgers roughed up David Wells and chased him out of the game in the sixth inning after he gave up three straight extra-base hits. Wells gave up six runs on seven hits in 5 and 2/3 innings of work. He walked one and struck out four.

Ismael Valdez has not been as sharp in this series as he had been previously in the postseason. Valdez gave up four runs on 11 hits over 6 and 1/3 innings of work. Valdez walked two and struck out three.

Scott Radinsky, after pitching a scoreless eighth inning where he allowed one base hit, came back out for the ninth and promptly gave up base hits to Derek Jeter and Bernie Williams. This prompted the Dodgers to go to Mark Guthrie, who walked Tino Martinez to load the bases after a 12-pitch at-bat which saw Martinez foul off half of those pitches. Guthrie got Mike Stanley to fly out, which scored Jeter, but then loaded the bases back up by walking Cecil Fielder. Jorge Posada took Guthrie to a full count, before ripping a single that would plate Williams to make it a one-run game.

The Dodgers would go back to the bullpen, this time bringing in Darren Dreifort. Dreifort promptly walked Wade Boggs, scoring Martinez to tie the game. Dreifort struck out Tim Raines, but then Curtis stepped up and smacked the game-winning single.

Racous Dodger Stadium propels Dodgers to 7-2 victory; force Game 7

The Yankees couldn't keep Eric Young off the base paths, as Young collected four hits and scored three runs as the Dodgers forced a Game 7 in a 7-2 victory in front of a sold-out Dodger Stadium crowd.

Hideo Nomo kept the Yankees completely off balance, giving up one run on eight hits over 7 and 1/3 innings pitched, striking out seven in the victory. David Cone struggled for the Yankees, giving up four runs on eight hits over six innings of work, walking two and striking out two.

The Yankees were able to get the tying run on deck in the ninth inning after scoring a run and walking the bases loaded. However, the Dodgers brought in knuckleballer Tom Candiotti, who needed two pitches to get the final out of the game.

Yankees rout Dodgers, repeat as World Series champions

Bernie Williams' fingerprints were all over this game. His two-run double in the third inning broke the scoreless tie. His three-run homer in the eighth inning put the exclamation point on a nine-run outburst by the Yankees. It was more than enough run support for Andy Pettite, who pitched like the 19-game winner he was for the first time this postseason, as the Yankees repeat as world champions, winning the franchise's 24th title.

Pettite gave up two runs on seven hits over eight innings of work, walking two and striking out two for his first win of the postseason. Pettite took a shutout into the eighth inning, which was shattered by Eric Karros' two-run homer. Karros was Pettite's boogeyman all game, getting four hits. Luckily for the Yankees, nobody else could muster more than that.

Chan Ho Park was roughed up in this game, giving up four runs on four hits in four innings of work, walking four, and striking out five in the losing cause.

Technical issues going through the expansion killed this. Should've done more testing.
