Hitting three home runs in a game is usually something to celebrate, but there was no celebration to be found at Kauffman Stadium after the trio of bombs from Vinnie Pasquantino. The Royals dropped their series-opening contest 14-9 to the Dodgers, leaving Pasquantino with only a historical footnote as consolation.

"Vinnie is blessed with a natural home run swing so he gets the ball up in the air real quickly," Kansas City manager Mike Matheny said after the loss. "It's just a shame we couldn't win the game, too. I'm sure it spoils the day a little for him."

In his last three games, he has seven hits, with six of them homeruns. It's the most homeruns hit by a Royals rookie in team history over a three-game span, and ties Mike Moustakas' and Salvador Perez's team record of six in that same timeframe.

"I don't go up there looking to hit a homerun typically," he said to reporters after the game. "But down that many runs, you need to try and spark something, so I went up there hunting for a specific pitch, and I got it."

Along with putting three in the tank, Pasquantino flashed some leather with a nice diving stop and shovel pass to Zack Greinke on a ground ball to end the fourth inning. The veteran hurler glove-bumped the rookie first baseman on the way back to the dugout.

Some timely hitting and fortunate circumstances helped the Royals nudge past the Dodgers in the Saturday game, winning by a 3-2 score.

A sac bunt attempt-turned-single from Edward Olivares, and two wild pitches helped bring home two runs in the inning, with Salvador Perez's single scoring Ernie Clement, and then the second wild pitch scoring Olivares to give the Royals the lead.

Working on four days' rest, Brad Keller went just five innings and eighty pitches, but was extremely effective with six strikeouts, three scattered hits, and didn't allow an earned run. Scott Barlow pitched a scoreless ninth, picking up his 19th save.

The victory was the Royals' 50th of the season, and was the first win over the Dodgers since June 4th, 2003. Their last win over the Dodgers in general was June 23rd, 2014 in L.A.

Olivares led the Royals with two hits and a run scored, while Perez drove in one of the Royals' two runs that came via hit. Clement's hit extended his hit streak to a modest five games, but he's reached base safely in his last ten games.

In those ten games, he's 18-for-40 (.450), with two doubles, two walks, a homerun, and seven RBI.

Ernie Clement's RBI single in the fourth to give the Royals a 3-2 lead was the last time they led in Sunday's game, as the Dodgers went on to score five unanswered to end the contest in a 7-3 loss.

Down 2-0 in the fourth, Max Muncy tied the game with his team-best 34th homerun of the season, only to see Clement wipe that out with his RBI hit to extend his hit streak to six. L.A. countered back with back-to-back doubles from Freddie Freeman and Muncy to tie the score again in the sixth, before an RBI single by Chris Taylor gave them back the lead for good.

The Dodgers would again lead off the next inning with consecutive doubles, this time by Cody Bellinger and Trea Turner. Freeman then stepped up against new pitcher Taylor Clarke, thwacking a two-run homerun to put the game mostly out of reach at 7-3.

Kansas City never really threatened again, going 0-for-9 over their last three half-innings against rookie reliever Bobby Miller, who picked up the win by throwing 4 1/3 innings of no-hit relief, striking out five.

He replaced Tyler Anderson, who left early with back discomfort, and is listed as day-to-day by skipper Dave Roberts.

Making his first MLB start, Jonathan Bowlan was impressive, striking out six over five innings and eighty-seven pitches of work. His only blemish was the homerun allowed to Muncy. He scattered three hits and a pair of walks.

O'Hearn Optioned; Garcia Re-called: After playing in just two games without a hit since being re-called in late July, the Royals have sent Ryan O'Hearn back to Omaha, and have re-called infielder Maikel Garcia from Double-A.

With Nicky Lopez out, that gives the Royals just two middle infielders, and the 22-year-old Garcia gives them some additional depth up the middle. Lopez is expected to be out at least another seven to ten days with a back issue.

In late May, Garcia played a handful of games with the Royals, going 1-for-6 before getting sent back down on June 1st. He's actually fashioned a pretty fine year with the Naturals in Double-A, posting a .750 OPS and 106 wRC+ in 393 plate appearances with the club.

Royals Confirm Agreement With Mojica: The Royals have agreed to terms with international prospect Mario Mojica, 16, on a $350,000 contract. He is the sixth known prospect to agree to terms, although players cannot officially sign until January 15th.

A six-foot-one, 170-pound lefty, Mojica throws three pitches -- a fastball, splitter, and changeup. His fastball sits in the 84-88 range, with the ability to hit 89-90 on occasion. He joins fellow pitchers Vinny Hoyos and Jelle Florie, outfielder Edwin Rodriguez, and infielders Jerry Vela and Edgar Melgar in the organization's current class of international players.

With all of the current agreed-upon terms that we know of, the Royals have used an allotment of $5.35 million to date, which is still below their international pool allotment of $6.263 million.

The minimum bonus allotment to not count against the cap is $10,000, which is much lower than the MLB Draft limit of $150,000.

For the second straight game, the Royals held an early lead, only to see it wiped away in the late innings as the Twins' offense got going in the eighth inning, turning a 5-4 deficit into an 8-5 victory. Kyle Garlick's two-run homerun was the pentultimate hit, giving them a three-run cushion.

The Royals dip to 50-67, while the scuffling Twins that have lost four of their last six improved to 64-50 as they try to keep pace in both the divisional and wildcard races. They do hold the second of the three wildcard slots, but are only 1.5 games up on the Yankees, and 4.5 games up against the Rangers. Cleveland is five back.

He had just one hit, but Vinnie Pasquantino continues to drop bombs on the opposition, hitting his second grand slam in the last four days. His slam put the Royals up 5-2 in the third, but that hit was the last time the Royals would light up the scoreboard.

A two-run Salvador Perez homerun in the first inning, and then RBI hits from Bobby Witt, Jr., and Perez in the second staked the Royals out to a 4-0 lead after just one and one-half innings.

However, the Twins rattled off ten straight runs beginning with a single tally in the second inning, scoring nine more after that as the Twins routed the Royals 10-4. Perez finished with three hits and three RBI, and Witt Jr., was 2-for-5 with a double, RBI, and stolen base.

Brady Singer took the loss, allowing six earned runs and eleven hits in four innings before getting pulled for Collin Snider. Snider pitched well in relief, tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts.

Wednesday's game followed the same pattern as in the last handful of games -- the Royals would build an early lead, only to see it evaporate in the late innings. This time, however, the strong start from Zack Greinke was upheld by the combo of Will Kincanon and Joel Payamps as the Royals took a 5-1 victory to salvage the final game of their road series in Minnesota.

They'll begin a four-game series with the AL East-leading Rays beginning today down in Tampa.

Bobby Witt, Jr., drove in the first three Royals runs in last night's game, doubling home a run in the third, and then socking a two-run single in the fifth. Vinnie Pasquantino immediately followed that up with a solo homerun, giving him a dozen for the season.

Pasquantino later drove in his second run of the game with a double in the seventh for some insurance, but they wouldn't really need it with the performance of the Royals' pitching staff.

Despite just under two months in the majors, Pasquantino already is third amongst AL rookies in homeruns with twelve, behind BWJ and Houston's Jeremy Pena, who have fourteen each, and then overall leader Spencer Torkelson's twenty-three.

"He's clearly figured something out," said manager Mike Matheny. "The work that Alec (Zumwalt) is putting in with these guys is starting to pay off at this level."

Bubic to Bullpen After Zerpa's Reinstatement: The Royals made a couple of roster moves as Angel Zerpa comes out of his six-game suspension. Richard Lovelady was optioned to Omaha, and Mike Matheny confirmed that Kris Bubic would be moved to the bullpen, taking Lovelady's spot there, making room for Zerpa to reclaim his rotation role.

The move also clears the way for Jonathan Bowlan to remain in the rotation, which is encouraging after his recent start against the Dodgers, holding their potent lineup to just two earned runs over five innings last Sunday. He's now the sixth pitcher from that vaunted 2018 class to make a start in the majors.

Bubic pitched nine times out of the pen a season ago, with his ERA being nearly a full two runs below his ERA as a starter (3.08 to 4.77). In 26 1/3 bullpen innings, he allowed just nineteen hits and no homeruns, but still struggled with walks (15), and struck out just twenty-two.

However, his GB% jumped to just over 50% out of the pen, as opposed to just 46% as a starter, suggesting that his offspeed stuff plays up a little more in short bursts, as opposed to five-plus innings.

In late May, Garcia played a handful of games with the Royals, going 1-for-6 before getting sent back down on June 1st. He's actually fashioned a pretty fine year with the Naturals in Double-A, posting a .750 OPS and 106 wRC+ in 393 plate appearances with the club.

If you like pitching and defense, Thursday night's game would have been right up your alley. Tampa's Shane Baz and the Royals' Angel Zerpa locked horns in a tight battle that ended up as a 1-0 defeat in ten innings, thanks to Kevin Kiermaier's two-out RBI single to score Brandon Lowe in the bottom of the 10th.

Zerpa carried a no-hitter into the seventh, only having it broken up on a Wander Franco double to lead off the seventh just over the outstretched glove of third baseman Emmanuel Rivera. Yandy Diaz added an infield single two hitters later, but Manny Margot grounded into a double play to end the inning. Zerpa was removed from the contest after that, throwing ninety-one pitches in his first start after returning from his suspension.

"He threw the ball awfully well, changed speeds effectively and had their guys off-balance," said manager Mike Matheny after Thursday's game. "Unfortunately, our bats were also pretty silent, their guy was pretty good, too."

Baz threw 7 1/3 shutout innings, striking out ten Royals and allowing just two hits and one walk. He allowed a single to Ernie Clement to lead off the first, and only allowed two baserunners total after that. Clement's hit extended his on-base streak to fourteen games, and his hitting streak to nine.

The two teams ended the first nine innings in a 1-1 tie, but the offensive fireworks really started after that, as the Royals and Rays traded leadoff two-run homeruns in the 10th before the Royals eventually claimed a 5-3 victory in eleven innings on Friday night.

On his first swing of the at-bat, Salvador Perez parked a 2-0 fastball into the seats to lead off the extras. Randy Arozarena returned the favor in kind against Scott Barlow one half-inning later.

Tied at three in the 11th, Dairon Blanco doubled to score lead runner Edward Olivares, and he would come around to score on Bobby Witt's infield single with two outs. Blanco snapped an 0-for-23 slump with three hits, including a stolen base.

Taylor Clarke, who entered the game in the 10th after Scott Barlow surrendered a two-run homerun and a single to lead off the bottom of the 10th, picked up the victory by pitching two scoreless innings.

Once again, Brad Keller pitched extremely well, but didn't factor into the decision as he left the game with the score knotted at one each. He tossed 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball, scattering six hits and two strikeouts with just one walk.

Wednesday, August 10th, was his first MLB appearance. That was followed by his first MLB start four days later on August 14th. It's only natural that his next start would yield his first MLB victory, as Jonathan Bowlan did just that on Saturday.

Through six innings of two-run ball, Bowlan locked down his first MLB win as the Royals took a 2-1 series lead at Tampa through Saturday's games. He struck out five and walked just a pair, scattering just two hits.

With a solo homerun in the first, Kyle Isbel kicked it off for the Royals as he led off the contest with a solo shot to right field. Brandon Lowe tied the game in the second with his 30th homerun of the year; but the Royals took the lead for good with a two-run third, as Bobby Witt, Jr., drove in a run as he reached on an error by third baseman Yu Chang, and Vinnie Pasquantino drove him in with a double in the following at-bat.

M.J. Melendez hit his eighth homerun of the season in the eighth inning, his first homerun with the Royals since July 30th at Yankee Stadium.

Yesterday, the Royals did something they hadn't done since the first of July -- clinch a road series victory! They held the Rays to just two runs on seven hits as they won their third straight game, this time by a 5-2 score. Brady Singer and Luis Patino battled to a 0-0 stalemate after four innings, but the dam finally broke in the Royals' favor, scoring five runs over their final five at-bats.

Emmanuel Rivera doubled and homered, going 2-for-4 to pace the team's offense. Dairon Blanco was 0-for-2, but walked and scored twice each. Playing behind the plate in this one, M.J. Melendez was 1-for-4, also scoring a run and stealing a base.

With six innings of solid baseball, Brady Singer moved to 9-7 on the season, by far the team's leader in victories. He allowed just one run in that span, striking out four and scattering five hits and two walks. Since being inserted into the bullpen, Kris Bubic has picked up a pair of saves over the last two games.

The team arrived back in Kansas City early this morning, where they'll play another makeup game against the White Sox today before hosting the Diamondbacks for two beginning on Tuesday.

                      Royal Rumblings

By Brian Douglas | Kansas City Star | August 23rd, 2022

Dayton Moore to Step Down at Season's End: The organization has announced that this will be team president Dayton Moore's final season with the club, as he will resign effective at season's end. It will be the end of an era, as Moore's tenure with the club went sixteen-plus seasons beginning midway through the 2006 season.

He's been the president of baseball operations for less than a year, having been promoted to the position just prior to this season. The move also meant J.J. Picollo would be the team's new GM, running the day-to-day operations.

Along the way they won a division title in 2015 and went to back-to-back World Series in 2014 and 2015, winning it all in 2015. However, since the Royals went 81-81 in 2016, they have not posted a winning record, and continue to slide further and further towards a bottom-three or four record in the league this season yet again.

It's unclear where Moore goes from here, as he is only fifty-five years old, and figures to still have a significant number of years before deciding to call it quits for good. He was a scout with the Braves during their mid-to-late 90's run, and brought championship baseball back to Kansas City after three decades.

He offered a statement that seemed to imply that it might not have been entirely his decision, as he expressed remorse that the season "didn't go as planned", but that he's thankful for the sixteen years he had with the organization, and that it's time for a new chapter. His son Robert is also a member of the Oakland A's organization now, having been drafted and signed by them last month.

Team majority owner John Sherman also expressed gratitude to Moore, saying that he's "one of baseball's brightest minds", that he left an indelible mark on the community, and that he brought back a sense of civic pride in the organization.

What does this mean for the front office? Almost certainly it means that Picollo's job is in question after not even one full season in the post, although he's been with the organization since Day One of the Moore era, so he's had a significant hand in where they are right now. It's also looking increasingly likely that this will be manager Mike Matheny's final year on the job absent a big turnaround over the final six weeks and change.

Greinke Shuts Sox Out In Makeup Contest: For the third time this season, Zack Greinke twirled a complete-game shutout, this time against the AL Central-leading White Sox as the Royals ripped off their fourth straight win in a 5-0 victory. The White Sox made a quick detour to Kansas City to make up a game from earlier in the season which was postponed due to the lockout.

He struck out just two, but walked just one while scattering five hits to move to 5-9 on the season. The Royals resume the normal schedule today with two home games over the next two days with Arizona.

"Greinke made us look real bad today," said Sox skipper Tony La Russa. "He was outstanding. Down in the zone with all his pitches, everything was moving as it got to the plate. Been doing it for a long, long time in this league."

He cruised into the ninth inning having thrown just eighty-four pitches, but threw nineteen alone in the ninth to preserve the shutout.

"There was no way he was coming out of that game," said pitching coach Cal Eldred. "He's probably throwing 84, 85 at that point, but his command is just so good it doesn't matter. He gutted out those final few hitters to keep them off the board."

Royals Trade Griffin To Toronto: A trade, you say? As long as the players involved are not on the major league roster, it's possible post-deadline. Kansas City has flipped the 27-year-old Griffin to the Blue Jays for rookie-ball righty Jonatan Bernal. Griffin was designated for assignment on Thursday night, and the trade was agreed upon earlier this morning after Griffin successfully cleared waivers and was outrighted to Omaha.

It's been a long, arduous road to the majors for Griffin, a former first-rounder from 2014 who actually made his MLB debut in 2020 before tearing the UCL in his pitching elbow in his debut appearance. He missed most of last season as well, but still pitched to a 3.57 ERA between Double and Triple-A.

In thirty-five Triple-A innings with Omaha this season, Griffin has been outstanding with thirty-seven strikeouts and just five walks in thirty-five innings. His FIP and SIERA were higher than his ERA of 1.80, but 2.72 and 2.49 respectively are nothing to sneeze at, even at the Triple-A level. In three starts with the Royals back in June, he put up a 6.07 ERA, but fanned more than a batter per inning with a 3.73 SIERA, nearly two-and-a-half points lower than his ERA.

What are the Royals getting in Bernal? He's a 20-year-old Mexican righty that has posted seventeen strikeouts in just 12 1/3 innings with the Blue Jays' Florida Rookie League affiliate this season, and has a career 3.89 ERA in the minors since signing internationally back in 2018.

Lopez Activated; Garcia Sent Down: Nicky Lopez was activated from the 10-day injured list, with Maikel Garcia headed back down to Double-A. Garcia's second cup of coffee with the Royals was much more productive than his first, as he was 4-for-18 (.222) with a double, triple, two runs scored, and a stolen base.

Lopez had missed the last week and change with a lower back strain, and has been taking infield for the last few days as he worked his way back. Unfortunately, while one comes off the list, another goes on as southpaw Jake Brentz will go on the injured list with a shoulder issue.

In the wake of the Griffin trade, Josh Dye was added to the 40-man roster and called up to take Brentz's spot in the bullpen as Richard Lovelady has really struggled in his limited appearances to date.

This team may not be very good, but they continue to scrap out close victories, the latest one being on Tuesday night against the visiting Diamondbacks. Arizona took a 2-0 lead after four innings, but the Royals scraped back with one in the fifth, one in the seventh, and then walked them off with a walk in the ninth from Vinnie Pasquantino to claim a 3-2 win. It's their fifth straight victory; their longest such winning streak this season.

With just two earned runs and seven strikeouts over seven innings, Angel Zerpa continues to impress in his extended major league look. He didn't factor into the decision, but kept the Royals in the hunt through the middle innings as he didn't allow any other runs to score besides the two in the fourth.

Bobby Witt, Jr., drove in the first two Royals' runs, one on a single in the fifth, and the game-tying double in the seventh. He also drew a walk in the ninth to load the bases, directly preceding Pasquantino's walk to end it. Both walks were given up by J.B. Bukauskas, one of the three players Houston gave up to get Zack Greinke several years ago.

In addition to BWJ's 2-for-4, Dairon Blanco also went 2-for-4 with a double. M.J. Melendez also reached base twice via walk. Kris Bubic picked up the victory in relief, pitching two scoreless innings.

Kansas City got out to a 4-0 lead after four innings, but the bullpen was overwhelmed in the late innings with ten runs over the last five innings in a 10-4 loss on Wednesday night.

Arizona scored two in the fifth, and four each in the seventh and eighth innings to put the game far out of reach for the Royals' offense.

With just two earned runs over five innings, Brad Keller once again didn't factor into the decision. Josh Dye pitched 1 1/3 innings with a pair of strikeouts in his MLB debut out of the bullpen.

With a base hit in the fifth inning, Ernie Clement ran his on-base streak to nineteen games, a career high.

                              Royal Rumblings

By Brian Douglas | Kansas City Star | August 26th, 2022

Royals Top 30 Prospect Promoted: There's less than twenty games left in the River Bandits' season down in High-A, but the Royals have decided to give outfielder Darryl Collins a brief audition with Quad Cities to finish out the season.

Remarkably, Collins has yet to reach legal drinking age, as the Dutch-born player turns twenty-one on September 16th. But he's had a remarkably solid year with the Columbia Fireflies the last season-plus, posting a .274/.384/.401 slash line in 893 plate appearances with Columbia dating back to the beginning of last year.

Those figures jump to .294/.396/.449 when you take out last season, so he's progressed quite well year-over-year. His manager with Columbia, Tony Pena, Jr., compared him a former Royals player in terms of their overall profile.

"He certainly reminds me of Andrew Benintendi," said Pena. "You'd never guess this kid has been playing professionally for only a handful of years. He's really young, but understands hitting and really works hard on his approach."

Collins, who is ranked as the Royals' 24th-highest prospect, could be playing his way into higher-end prospect status next year with his jump in production this season, especially in the power department -- known as more of a slap, contact-style hitter coming into this season, he has twenty-nine doubles, five triples, and nine homeruns in 2022.

He's also incredibly advanced in the strike zone, with a remarkable 14.1% walk rate, and equally exceptional 16.8% strikeout rate. Now, the jump to High-A could correct those numbers somewhat, but the Royals will hopefully have enough of a sample with the River Bandits to gauge his progress.

"He's probably a three-and-a-half tool guy," said Clint Scoles, who covers the minors for the fansite Royals Review. "Now, the power tool might be showing up for him, which is a huge deal. But he's still a pretty fringy outfielder, who might be a better fit at first base, especially if he can keep driving the ball out of the park more."
