Hitting three home runs in a game is usually something to celebrate, but there was no celebration to be found at Kauffman Stadium after the trio of bombs from Vinnie Pasquantino. The Royals dropped their series-opening contest 14-9 to the Dodgers, leaving Pasquantino with only a historical footnote as consolation.
"Vinnie is blessed with a natural home run swing so he gets the ball up in the air real quickly," Kansas City manager Mike Matheny said after the loss. "It's just a shame we couldn't win the game, too. I'm sure it spoils the day a little for him."
In his last three games, he has seven hits, with six of them homeruns. It's the most homeruns hit by a Royals rookie in team history over a three-game span, and ties Mike Moustakas' and Salvador Perez's team record of six in that same timeframe.
"I don't go up there looking to hit a homerun typically," he said to reporters after the game. "But down that many runs, you need to try and spark something, so I went up there hunting for a specific pitch, and I got it."
Along with putting three in the tank, Pasquantino flashed some leather with a nice diving stop and shovel pass to Zack Greinke on a ground ball to end the fourth inning. The veteran hurler glove-bumped the rookie first baseman on the way back to the dugout.

Some timely hitting and fortunate circumstances helped the Royals nudge past the Dodgers in the Saturday game, winning by a 3-2 score.
A sac bunt attempt-turned-single from Edward Olivares, and two wild pitches helped bring home two runs in the inning, with Salvador Perez's single scoring Ernie Clement, and then the second wild pitch scoring Olivares to give the Royals the lead.
Working on four days' rest, Brad Keller went just five innings and eighty pitches, but was extremely effective with six strikeouts, three scattered hits, and didn't allow an earned run. Scott Barlow pitched a scoreless ninth, picking up his 19th save.
The victory was the Royals' 50th of the season, and was the first win over the Dodgers since June 4th, 2003. Their last win over the Dodgers in general was June 23rd, 2014 in L.A.
Olivares led the Royals with two hits and a run scored, while Perez drove in one of the Royals' two runs that came via hit. Clement's hit extended his hit streak to a modest five games, but he's reached base safely in his last ten games.
In those ten games, he's 18-for-40 (.450), with two doubles, two walks, a homerun, and seven RBI.

Ernie Clement's RBI single in the fourth to give the Royals a 3-2 lead was the last time they led in Sunday's game, as the Dodgers went on to score five unanswered to end the contest in a 7-3 loss.
Down 2-0 in the fourth, Max Muncy tied the game with his team-best 34th homerun of the season, only to see Clement wipe that out with his RBI hit to extend his hit streak to six. L.A. countered back with back-to-back doubles from Freddie Freeman and Muncy to tie the score again in the sixth, before an RBI single by Chris Taylor gave them back the lead for good.
The Dodgers would again lead off the next inning with consecutive doubles, this time by Cody Bellinger and Trea Turner. Freeman then stepped up against new pitcher Taylor Clarke, thwacking a two-run homerun to put the game mostly out of reach at 7-3.
Kansas City never really threatened again, going 0-for-9 over their last three half-innings against rookie reliever Bobby Miller, who picked up the win by throwing 4 1/3 innings of no-hit relief, striking out five.
He replaced Tyler Anderson, who left early with back discomfort, and is listed as day-to-day by skipper Dave Roberts.
Making his first MLB start, Jonathan Bowlan was impressive, striking out six over five innings and eighty-seven pitches of work. His only blemish was the homerun allowed to Muncy. He scattered three hits and a pair of walks.
