Blue Jays Take Pitchers Duel 1-0

Erik Swanson gets a strikeout to earn the save.

Toronto - José Berríos threw eight shut out innings, and a sacrifice fly from Alejandro Kirk was all the Blue Jays needed as they got a 1-0 win to take the weekend series from the Mariners. Logan Gilbert pitched great but was stuck with a loss once again as the offense has not been able to do anything for him so far this season. The Mariners end the month already back a sizeable 8.5 games from the LA Angels who are red hot, and show no signs of slowing down. Seattle will get a day off tomorrow to travel to Oakland. Seattle will look to make up some ground against the worst team in baseball as their schedule starts to soften after a tough first month. It will be Marco Gonzales (1-3, 5.67 ERA) taking on Paul Blackburn (0-1, 2.35 ERA) in the opener.

Gonzales Throws Gem as Mariners Down A's 3-1

Paul Sewald got his fifth save of the season.

Oakland - Marco Gonzales threw seven strong innings striking out nine, as the Mariners got back in the win column with a 3-1 win. The Mariners bats weren't too potent, but they did enough to get the victory. The M's scored two runs without the benefit of a hit in the fifth inning as Cooper Hummel walked in a run, and Julio Rodríguez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Cal Raleigh made it 3-0 in the sixth with an RBI Single. The A's got their lone run on a sac fly in the eighth inning. The two teams are back at it tomorrow with Chris Flexen (2-0, 3.18 ERA) taking the mound against Kyle Fuller (0-4, 5.81 ERA).

        Mariners Defeat A's 5-2

Oakland - Chris Flexen got his third win of the season filling in for George Kirby as the Mariners got a 5-2 win over the Oakland A's Wednesday. Ty France homered for Seattle, who cruised to a rather easy win despite some shaky defense with three errors. The feeble Oakland lineup could do little to take advantage however as they dropped to an abysmal 4-27 on the season. Seattle will go for the sweep tomorrow with their ace Luis Castillo (2-2, 5.93 ERA) taking the hill against Shintaro Fujinami (0-3, 7.77 ERA).

Fujinami Baffles Mariners in 4-0 Shutout Win

Oakland - Shintaro Fujinami showed the promise that the A's hoped for when they signed the Japanese Pitcher this offseason. He had the Mariner hitters guessing all day racking up thirteen strikeouts in a complete game shut out performance as the A's avoided the sweep with a 4-0 win. On the other side Luis Castillo has yet to show the ace stuff the M's were expecting when trading for, and signing him to a long term extension last season. The loss drops Seattle back below .500 as they head home for a big three game series against the Houston Astros. It will be Robbie Ray (2-1, 3.90 ERA) getting the ball in the opener against Cristian Javier (3-2, 3.66 ERA).

France's Two Home Runs Power Mariners to Victory

Ty France had two home runs on the night.

Seattle - Ty France blasted two home runs as the Mariners overcame a rough second inning from Robbie Ray to defeat the Houston Astros 7-4 in a rematch of last years division series. France started the game with a two run shot in the first inning, but the Astros countered with four second inning runs off Robbie Ray. That held up until the fifth inning when France hit another two run shot to put Seattle back in the lead 5-4. Jarred Kelenic gave the Mariners some insurance in the eighth inning with a two run blast of his own. Seattle will get a chance to take the series tomorrow with Logan Gilbert (1-4, 3.00 ERA) getting the start for the M's against José Urquidy (0-4, 5.23 ERA).

              Mariners Rally to Stun Astros

Teoscar Hernández's homerun gave Seattle the lead for good.

Seattle - The Mariners used a five run seventh inning to mount a comeback on the Houston Astros, then held on to down their AL West rivals 10-8 in a thriller. Ty France continued his hot hitting by sparking the rally with a two run shot to cut the lead to 8-6. Eugenio Suárez followed with a solo shot to cut it to 8-7, and the Mariners crowd was fired up and sensing the comeback. After Cal Raleigh walked, Teoscar Hernández drilled one to dead center for the third HR of the inning, and gave the Mariners a 9-8 lead that they would not relinquish. After getting swept in the ALDS last year, the Mariners will look for a little revenge tomorrow as they go for a sweep of their own. They'll have to do it against Luis Garcia (4-0, 1.38 ERA), while Seattle counters with Marco Gonzales (2-3, 4.76 ERA).

Mariners Walk it Off in Extras to Sweep Astros

The Mariners celebrate their walk-off win.

Seattle - Marco Gonzales hurled another gem for the Mariners, and it took one extra inning, but Seattle got a big time sweep over their hated AL West rivals when Eugenio Suárez walked it off with a double in the 10th inning to give the M's a 3-2 win. Seattle had the lead going into the ninth, but Yordan Alvarez tied things up with a solo shot off Paul Sewald. Alvarez had a solo shot in the first inning as well as his two home runs were the only runs of the day for Houston. Keeping the runners ahead of Alvarez off the bases proved key in the Mariners ability to get the sweep this weekend. Things don't get any easier however as another AL West foe comes to town tomorrow as the Texas Rangers will send Martin Pérez (2-1, 2.84 ERA) to the mound to face Chris Flexen (3-0, 2.70 ERA) for the Mariners.

Mariners Keep it Rolling 6-2 Over Rangers

Seattle - Chris Flexen had another strong performance on the mound, and Seattle rode Kolten Wong's four hits on offense as they took down the Texas Rangers 6-2 in the opening game of their three game series. Most of the damage came in the sixth where the Mariners strung together five consecutive singles capped off by Tommy La Stella's two run hit that pushed the lead to 6-0. The Rangers got one back in the seventh, and chased Flexen to begin the eighth but never really threatened a comeback. The two teams are back in action tomorrow with Luis Castillo (2-3, 6.12 ERA) taking the mound against Andrew Heaney (1-3, 5.08 ERA).

Mariners Win Streak Ends at Four

Seattle - The Mariners offense couldn't put anything together against Texas starter Andrew Heaney, and despite pitching well Luis Castillo took another loss as the Mariners fell 5-1 to the Rangers on Tuesday. Brad Miller, and Adolis García homered for the Rangers to pace the offense, while the Mariners lone run came on an RBI double late by Sam Haggerty. Seattle will try to take the rubber game of the series tomorrow, but it will not be an easy task going up against Jacob deGrom (1-1, 3.80 ERA). Seattle will counter with their own former Cy Young winner Robbie Ray (3-1, 4.25 ERA).

Mariners Fall 7-2 in Series Finale

Seattle - Jonah Heim clubbed two home runs, and the Rangers got a second win from their ace Jacob deGrom as they took the series over the Seattle Mariners with a 7-2 win in the finale. The Mariners managed two home runs off of deGrom, but they were both solo shots from Cal Raleigh, and Teoscar Hernández. That wasn't enough to support Robbie Ray, who pitched well with eleven strikeouts, but was bitten by the long ball as well. The Mariners will get a day off tomorrow before beginning a nine game road trip starting Friday in Detroit against the Tigers. It will be Logan Gilbert (1-4, 3.45 ERA) pitching in the opener against Spencer Turnbull (3-1, 3.43 ERA).
