    Royals Mailbag (6/3)

    ROYALS MAILBAG
Trade talks heat up; hitting struggles on the hitting coach?

    By artoodeetoo
    06/03/2024

It's the first off day of the month, which means that the second version of the 2024 mailbag is here! This edition is going to cover topics such as putting Maikel Garcia in a different slot in the order, where the Royals could go in the trade market if they had one trade to make, and is hitting coach Alec Zumwalt's job safe? These topics and more are covered in this month's Royals Mailbag.

If you could only have one trade to improve the team at the deadline, would you use it to improve the lineup or the staff?

The Royals need more firepower in the lineup. I was going to post an article this week regarding the potential trade targets to bolster the lineup, but I'm going to hold off for another several weeks to see how 1) the rest of the league starts to shake out, and 2) to see if any of the current players get hot and maybe give J.J. Picollo enough hope that the lineup can hold up, and he can go get a bullpen arm or two to strengthen that side.

Getting bullpen help is much cheaper prospect-wise than acquiring a bat; and despite what Picollo says about other teams 'wanting guys' that they have, they have the second-worst farm system in the league, and very little top-end talent to go get a guy like Brandon Drury, or pry away a multi-year acquisition like Abraham Toro from Oakland or Lamonte Wade Jr from San Francisco.

Aside from Will Smith, left-handed relievers are really, really struggling with both the Royals and in the upper minors. Josh Taylor is a question mark; and Jake Brentz can throw 100-plus, but can't find the strike zone still. Sam Long is really the only one that's had any success besides Smith, and they just signed veteran T.J. McFarland to a minor-league deal yesterday. Others like Walter Pennington just haven't shown enough yet that they're good enough for an opportunity. Perhaps Kris Bubic fills a long-relief or 'follower' type of role when he comes off his rehab stint?

On the right side, Matt Sauer has been very good after a slow start, but is he ready for the pressure of a post-season push? Three guys that were supposed to have fairly big roles in the bullpen (Carlos Hernandez, Jordan Lyles, Nick Anderson) are all on the IL and/or haven't been effective this season. It's unclear when Lyles will be back from his personal leave.

Is a change of hitting coach needed?

I'm a big, big fan of what Alec Zumwalt has done since coming into the organization in 2019, basically overhauling the Royals' minor league hitting program, and turning around the careers of players like MJ Melendez (more on him later), Bobby Witt Jr, and Nick Pratto before making him the full-time coach in 2022; albeit under the previous manager. That said, he's pulling double duty in serving in that position PLUS as the team's major league hitting coach. I wonder if he and the Royals are better served by relinquishing one of those positions.

It's unlikely we'll find out until the season's over, unless the offensive completely tanks and the Royals end up falling off a cliff, much like 2021. Which I suppose isn't out of the question.

To me, he's more valuable as the minor league hitting coordinator, much like how Drew Saylor oversees all of the pitching in the minors. But he's not the pitching coach at the big league level, Brian Sweeney is. And Sweeney is doing a pretty wonderful job, as he has the Royals' staff as a top ten unit in the league despite some individual relievers pitching down from their usual abilities.

Should Maikel Garcia be moved down in the order?

I know it's tempting to move a guy that's hitting like him in the leadoff role down to get him more RBI opportunities, but he's thriving in his current role. Moving him off that spot, especially when they don't have anyone else that would fit the role any better, is a mistake in my opinion.

However, there is one player that I would watch for in this regard down the road -- MJ Melendez. The power numbers don't look like it, but his ISO mark is .180, which is the best of his career, and has an OPS+ of 106, and a wRC+ of 109. His strikeout rate is a much more palatable 22% over his career of 27%, and is walking about 11.5% of the time (up from 10% in 2023). Those are leadoff hitter-type numbers, and I would not be opposed to giving him some spot starts in the leadoff spot, especially against lefties and let Garcia drop down to the two or three spot.

Melendez is likely to never be the kind of bat that hits 25-plus homeruns and hits in the middle third as originally hoped, but his on-base skills and contact rates are leaps and bounds better than the last few years, and that is an encouraging sign. Need to see more, though, so I hope that idea doesn't come to fruition -- yet. Frankly, if I were Matt Quatraro and Alec Zumwalt, I would sit him down and tell him that being a top-of-the-order hitter who is a high OBP guy is where he's going to make his money in the league, and not as a clean-up hitter.

Who are your picks for Royals All-Stars at this point?

If he's not voted in, Salvy should get in easily on the player's ballot, as he's one of the most well-liked and respected players in the league. Bobby Witt has likely played himself out of any chance of being voted in, so he's going to have to hope for a red-hot June to put him back in the conversation. If Maikel Garcia continues to hit like he is, he has a good shot at making it as a reserve.

It's a bit murkier after that. I'd like to think Cole Ragans could make it, but the starting pitching in the American League is just stacked. Same goes for Michael Wacha. Chris Stratton and John Schreiber are both having fantastic seasons. Non-closers to be utterly dominant to get in though; and if you're that good, why are you not closing games for your team anyway?

Final answer -- Salvy gets voted in, while Garcia and Stratton make the team as reserves, with Stratton over Schreiber due to saves. If Bobby Witt has a big month, he'll likely overtake Garcia as he has much better counting numbers aside from BA.

What should the Royals do with their first pick in July?

This is still a long ways away, but I'll take a stab at it. They should take BPA, but they really could also use an infusion of pitching. Unfortunately, at the top of this class there are not many top-end college arms to choose from, although the class has good depth in that regard. Hagen Smith of Arkansas is likely going to be the top college pitcher available, but with the lack of depth at the top, he'll likely be gone by the time the sixth pick rolls around. Same for Wake Forest's Chase Burns, a fire-balling but inconsistent righty.

If they can persuade Florida's Jac Caglianone to devote himself full-time to pitching, he's an option there especially since he's a southpaw. After leading all of college baseball in homeruns with a whopping thirty-three in 2023, it's going to be difficult, however, to convince him that pitching is his best ticket to the majors. His pure 70-grade power tool is going to be tough to pass up if he falls that far; and there is always the pitching to fall back on if hitting somehow doesn't work out.

Others that have been linked to the Royals have been Texas A&M outfielder Braden Montgomery and Georgia outfielder Charlie Condon (both powerhouse hitting prospects), and prep shortstop Bryce Rainer, who has already drawn comparisons to Rangers shortstop Corey Seager.

      Friday, June 4th, 2024
Behind an impressive performance from Brady Singer, the Royals got off to a good start in their season series with divisional leader Cleveland, posting an 8-5 victory on Tuesday night. Brady Singer allowed just two earned runs over seven innings to get only his second victory of the season against five losses.

"Feels good to get in the win column for the first time in a while," he said. "I understand much of it has to do with what goes on around you in the game that isn't under your control, but it's good to get out there and put together some solid innings. Offense backed us all up and came out with a big victory."

After two scoreless outings since coming off the injured list, Josh Taylor was tagged for a couple of runs in the eighth, and then Matt Sauer allowed a solo homerun in the ninth, but it was too little, too late for the Guardians.

Carlos Carrasco got the start as the 'opener' for Stephen Vogt's squad and pitched two innings, allowing only a solo homerun to Bobby Witt Jr. But Ben Lively, who has had a solid year for the Guardians, allowed seven earned runs in four innings in relief of Carrasco.

Kansas City wasted zero time when Lively entered the game, getting two runs each in the third and fourth to go up 5-1. Vinnie Pasquantino's two-run double accounted for the tallies in the third, and AL batting leader Maikel Garcia stroked a two-run single in the fourth.

      Saturday, June 5th, 2024
After several games where the Royals' bats were loud and proud, Hunter Gaddis of the Guardians silenced them over seven innings, holding the Royals to just one earned run in seven innings to retire the Royals by a 3-1 score.

Michael Wacha pitched an eight-inning complete game, taking the loss with three earned runs on just three hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

"A bright side is that with the long stretch we have between now and our next off day, we'll need all the innings out of our rotation we can get," said manager Matt Quatraro. "I think it's almost two weeks until we're off with several travel days within all of that."

Maikel Garcia and Hunter Renfroe each collected a pair of hits to pace the offense, but they had just a half-dozen hits in all. Garcia's single in the third accounted for the only run of the game for Kansas City.

      Sunday, June 6th, 2024
The Guardians made things interesting in the late innings, but the Royals hung on to claim the rubber game of the series at Cleveland, winning with a late homerun from Bobby Witt Jr in a 4-3 decision. It was Witt's 11th homerun of the season, second only on the team to Salvador Perez's 13.

Vinnie Pasquantino, facing one of the league's top young pitchers in Tanner Bibee, smacked a three-run homerun to put the Royals up 3-0 in the fourth inning. That lead held until the eighth when Will Smith, brought in to face a gauntlet of left-handed hitters with one out in that inning, surrendered a three-run homerun to Josh Naylor to tie the score.

"We had planned to leave Will out there until the game was finished," said manager Matt Quatraro. "He had been working with nearly a week's rest, so we thought he had the juice to get the five-out save."

It spoiled a brilliant start from Edward Cabrera, who pitched a season-high 7 1/3 shutout innings (at the time), striking out eight while scattering six hits and no walks. He was responsible for one of the runs from Naylor's homerun, but still a great performance all the same.

In five starts this season, which includes a start with the Marlins earlier in the year, he's pitched 27 1/3 innings with just five walks and thirty-one strikeouts. In 21 1/3 innings with just the Royals in his four starts, he's walked only three with twenty-four strikeouts and three earned runs.

"Eddie's been fantastic for us, and has filled that number-five role and then some when Alec (Marsh) went down," Quatraro went on to say. "We were up front with him when he got here that he wouldn't likely have a starting spot to start out, but that if the opportunity arose, he was going to get a chance to start, and he's really taken that head-on. We may have to go with a six-man crew when Marsh gets back."

D-Backs, 1B Walker agree to extension: Arizona and slugging first baseman Christian Walker have agreed to a five-year, $109 million contract extension that will keep him in Arizona through 2029, per the Arizona Republic.

The contract includes a $10 million signing bonus, as well as incentives that could push his final total to $115 million if all five years are realized and all incentives met.

He's slated to earn $100,000 for each 100 plate appearances per season up to 600, so he could potentially make an additional $3 million from those, and could also earn $500,000 for an MVP and additional $100,000 for an All-Star bid in each season.

Mitchell demoted; Royals to employ six-man rotation?

          By artoodeetoo
          06/07/2024

          TOP STORIES
Royals to potentially go with six-man rotation? Matt Quatraro has talked about it when asked before, but with the emergence of Edward Cabrera as a legit rotation arm, and others such as Kris Bubic and Alec Marsh set to return by the end of the month, it begs the question -- should they go with a six-man rotation?

It makes sense on the surface. The bullpen has actually been well-rested over the last couple of weeks with starters working deep into games, but with nearly every starter on the roster more than halfway to their 2023 innings totals barely two months into the season, the Royals appear to be considering adding a rotation arm to spread out the starter's innings a bit more.

"It's something that's been discussed with Paul (bench coach Hoover), (pitching coach) Brian Sweeney, and (GM Picollo) J.J., but nothing concrete has been agreed upon," Quatraro noted earlier in the week. "I mean, (Cole) Ragans' injury history has been pretty well-documented, and you have Seth (Lugo) and Michael (Wacha) who are guys in their early to mid 30's, and you'd like to keep their arms as fresh as possible for a playoff push."

Quatraro was also quick to clarify that they don't feel the need to go outside the organization in that scenario.

"We have guys that are either in the minors, rehabbing, or will be coming off the injured list soon that we'd consider first," he said. "Alec is doing pretty well, we think he might be coming off the list a bit earlier than expected, actually, which is good news."

Prospects on the move: A couple of Royals prospects made the news this past week, and not all good. First, the bad -- last year's top pick, catcher Blake Mitchell, was dropped back down to the Arizona Rookie League squad. While his defense has drawn rave reviews, his bat has not, hitting .140 with a strikeout rate of right around 40% (70 K in 174 PA).

On the good side, right-hander Chandler Champlain is headed to Triple-A for the first time in his career. One of the three pitchers acquired in the Andrew Benintendi trade with the Yankees from 2022, Champlain may have been the least-heralded of the three as a ninth-round pick out of USC back in 2021.

Despite dealing with a back injury for a portion of the season, he's managed to post a 2.73 ERA in his last six Double-A starts, striking out twenty-five and walking just seven in his last 29 1/3 innings.

            W: Gabe Speier (4-4) L: Will Smith (2-4) S: Andres Munoz (14)

            Monday, June 7th, 2024
Winners of four straight, Seattle couldn't be cooled off by the Royals as Jorge Polanco's two homeruns pushed them past Kansas City by a 5-4 score. The second of Polanco's two homers came in the ninth, a two-run shot against Will Smith, who has now blown his last two save opportunities.

That was just on the heels of the Royals taking the lead in the eighth inning on a two-run double from Hunter Renfroe against former Royal Gabe Speier, who has struggled against his old team this season.

"With Will, he's been our best lefty and we just played the numbers," manager Matt Quatraro mused. "Two of the three guys that were due up in the ninth are switch-hitters that are consistently worse against the left side than the right, and we went with what we thought as the stronger statistical play. It just didn't work this time. He just got, got. It happens."

On the positive side, after a tough May, Bobby Witt Jr is off to a torrid start in June as he's hit safely in all six June games to date, going 12-for-25 (.480) with a couple of homeruns, four doubles, nine runs scored, and two walks.

"Man, having him back and hitting is a real boost for us," Quatraro said, sounding relieved. "I know he was dealing with a bit of a wrist issue, but I think that's behind him now. He's a tough kid who will play through some bumps and strains."

Cole Ragans also was outstanding despite giving up a couple of homeruns. he allowed three earned runs in seven innings of work, striking out eight with three walks. James McArthur pitched a perfect eighth in his first outing since June 1st.

The game looked well in hand with the Royals up 7-4 going into the ninth, but Chris Stratton had a rare meltdown, as Luis Urias tied the game in the ninth with a three-run homerun, only to see the Royals win it in ten innings by an 8-7 score.

The victory clinches the season series victory for the Royals, as they are now 4-1 against the Mariners this season with Wednesday's game remaining. They've all been close affairs so far, with only the 17-12 barn-burner back in May as the lone game not decided by two runs or less.

The Royals' win also snapped the Mariners' five-game winning streak, although they've been playing well even before the winning streak having won eight of thirteen prior to rolling off five wins in a row.

Kyle Isbel was 2-for-5, with his second hit the walk-off double that scored MJ Melendez from second base with two outs.

"Big, big win for us," said manager Matt Quatraro. "This one is up there with the win at Cleveland a few nights ago where Bobby Witt hit the big ninth-inning homerun to pull that one out."

Seth Lugo allowed three earned runs (four total) in 6 1/3 innings, striking out four with a couple of walks. James McArthur's scoreless appearance in the 10th inning gave him the victory, moving him to 2-1 on the season.

            Wednesday, June 9th, 2024
For the second straight night, the game went into extras, but Kansas City couldn't pull off the victory as Seattle scored a single tally in the top of the 10th to escape with a 1-0 victory.

Brady Singer pitched arguably the best game of his career; and it was all for naught as he left after eight innings in a 0-0 tie. In those eight frames, he scattered three hits and a walk, striking out a career-high dozen hitters.

He was matched pitch-for-pitch by George Kirby, who also tossed eight shutout innings for the Mariners, also leaving with the game deadlocked at zero. He was replaced by Matt Brash, who picked up the win in relief, tossing a pair of scoreless innings.

Josh Taylor took the loss, as he was responsible for the 'ghost' runner on second that scored on Ty France's two-out single. He pitched a scoreless ninth, but perhaps remembering what had happened the night before, walked Luis Urias on four pitches to begin the 10th, prompting Matt Quatraro to bring Matt Sauer in out of the bullpen. Sauer coaxed a double play out of Mitch Haniger, but France singled off Sauer to score Luke Raley, and he allowed another hit to Samad Taylor before John Schreiber got the final out.

"It's a shame we couldn't support him more," manager Matt Quatraro lamented of his starting pitcher. "He was doing an excellent job of mixing up his stuff really well and keeping their hitters off-balance. All of these games with Seattle have been highly competitive, coming down to just a play or two in almost all of them."

Red Sox infielder suspended after third-strike argument: Romy Gonzalez, who has been one of the early-season surprises this year around the league with a team-best twelve homeruns, was suspended for four games by the league office without a chance for appeal after bumping an umpire during an argument about a called third strike on Tuesday night, a game Boston went on to lose 7-1 to the White Sox.

To be fair, the home plate umpire for the game was Angel Hernandez, who has a well-deserved rep for inconsistent, if not outright bad, strike zones, but contact with an umpire is still contact, and the league office wasted no time suspending Gonzalez in a press release a few hours after the game ended.

"Oh, I know it's coming," he said of the potential suspension after the loss. "Should I have maybe handled it a little differently? Sure, but his zone was $#!+ and I made sure that he knew that."

Gonzalez did not appeal the suspension, and is eligible to return on the 14th when the Red Sox and Yankees renew their rivalry at Fenway over the weekend.

After earlier season trades for Colin Selby and Edward Cabrera, he's struck again in the trade market, as he's swung a deal to send minor league infielder Leonel Valera and right-handed pitcher Anthony Simonelli to the Oakland A's for right-hander Austin Adams and cash.

Both prospects are in the Royals' Top 30 as per Baseball America, but again, we're talking about one of the two or three shallowest farm systems in the league that don't have a single Top 100 prospect. Simonelli is the Royals' 20th-ranked prospect, where Valera comes in 23rd.

Adams has been one of the most dominant relievers in the league this year, posting a ridiculous 42.5% strikeout rate to go along with an equally bonkers 6.3% walk rate. Despite a middling 3.86 ERA in 21 innings of work, his FIP and SIERA are at 1.19 and 0.75, which suggest he's been even better than his surface numbers would indicate.

Both of those numbers are outside the norm for Adams over his career, and don't figure to hold up over time. But his calling card is keeping the ball inside the park with a .5 HR/9 rate over 135 career MLB innings, and even a 4-5% change in the wrong direction in his strikeout and walk numbers would still count as above-average in today's MLB, especially for relievers.

He's expected to be in uniform tonight for the start of the Royals' four-game set with the last-place Yankees. Selby was also re-called from Omaha, sending southpaw Jake Brentz back down to the Storm Chasers. Former second-round pick Jonathan Bowlan was designated for assignment to make room for Adams on the 40-man roster.

Led by four RBI, which included a two-run homerun, Dairon Blanco and the Royals posted a 7-5 victory over the New York Yankees to open their four-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Michael Wacha went just five innings, throwing 101 pitches in the effort and allowing four runs (one earned).

The fleet-footed Royals outfielder singled to score two in the Royals' five-run fourth inning against Yankee starter Carlos Rodon. He later homered in the sixth inning, this time off right-hander Clay Holmes, poking a line drive just over the right field wall, some 340 feet from home plate.

"He may have went around the bases even if that ball didn't get over the fence," joked manager Matt Quatraro. "I think he was already at second base when the ball went over."

Their five-run fourth came on the heels of the Yanks' three-run top of the fourth, with Austin Wells' towering homerun to center capping it off. New York scored their other runs of that inning on a wild pitch and a double play.

Aaron Judge followed that with just his second homerun of the season in the fifth inning, as he recently returned from a lengthy injured list stay after a wrist injury very early in the season.

He homered again in the ninth against Will Smith, this time hitting a two-out laser into the left field seats for his third homerun of the year. Smith did get the save, his ninth of the season; but did not do so until the tying run came to the plate, getting Giancarlo Stanton to fly out to end the game.

New York scored two in the ninth to break a 2-2 tie, holding on in the bottom of the inning to fend off the Royals by a 4-2 score, evening the series at one win each.

It was the first defeat for Chris Stratton this year, falling to 4-1 in relief on the season as he allowed two runs in the ninth. After one earned run in his first fifteen innings, he's allowed five earned runs in his last three appearances, covering 2 1/3 innings.

Kansas City got out to a 2-0 lead thanks to Dairon Blanco's groundball out RBI in the second, and Freddy Fermin hitting a sac fly in the third. The Royals' 2-0 lead held up until the seventh inning when New York tied the game against former Yankee farmhand Matt Sauer, scoring a pair of tallies with a Jose Trevino RBI single, and an RBI double by Jon Berti.

Berti played a big role in the ninth-inning rally, as he reached on a fielder's choice in the ninth, and was brought home by Juan Soto's double. Alex Verdugo singled home Soto for an additional insurance run, and Tommy Kahnle shut the door in the ninth to get the save.

Salvador Perez and Bobby Witt Jr paced the Royals offense with three and two hits apiece, but couldn't put much more than that together against Marcus Stroman, who allowed just two earned runs on seven hits over 6 1/3. Royals starter Edward Cabrera, who has been fantastic since being elevated into a starting role, left after just four innings with an apparent ribcage injury that was later termed as a strained oblique. Manager Matt Quatraro noted that he would be day-to-day.

In four innings, Cabrera walked three, but surrendered just one hit and fanned a pair without allowing an earned run. Austin Adams came in for Cabrera for his first appearance in a Royals' uniform. He pitched a scoreless inning, but worked around a single, double, and a walk by striking out a pair and getting a weak pop out in the other at-bat.

With his ninth-inning double, Garrett Hampson became a Royals walk-off hero for the second time this season as the Royals clinched at least a split of their series with the Yankees, winning 5-4 in thrilling fashion at home. Down 4-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth, Bobby Witt Jr forced at least another inning as he led off the frame with his 13th homerun of the season.

He also collected the game-winning, walk-off single back on May 8th against the Milwaukee Brewers, a 4-3 win on that day.

Salvador Perez flew out for the first out of the inning against Tommy Kahnle, but Vinnie Pasquantino's single chased Kahnle from the game in favor of Ian Hamilton. Hamilton got MJ Melendez to ground into a fielder's choice to bring up Hampson.

Hampson came into the game with just seventy-one plate appearances on the team, but has been one of the best on the roster at working counts and getting on base with a robust 12.5% walk rate.

"It's really the big reason why we brought him in," said manager Matt Quatraro. "JJ (Picollo) and I really, really like how he approaches at-bats and doesn't try to go outside what he's capable of doing. It's allowed him to come up big in situations that called for it, like tonight."

Cole Ragans went 6 1/3 innings in his start, striking out six with a couple of walks and homeruns allowed, but otherwise pitched a solid game to keep the Royals in it until the end. John Schreiber picked up his second win in relief, going to 2-0 on the season while working around a hit and a walk in the ninth.

Seth Lugo made a bit of Royals history last night, matching Luke Hochevar's team record for most strikeouts in a start without issuing a walk in a 5-2 Royals victory. Lugo struck out a career-high 13, blowing away his previous high of nine. Hochevar fanned thirteen Rangers hitters back on July 25th, 2009 without tossing a free pass.

He became just the eighth pitcher in team history to record more than thirteen strikeouts in a game, joining Hochevar, Bret Saberhagen, Zack Greinke, Kevin Appier, Mark Gubicza, and Danny Duffy, who has the overall record with sixteen.

In six innings, Lugo allowed just one earned run, coming on a Giancarlo Stanton solo homerun. Besides that, the Yankees' hitters just looked confounded most of the night. They did later get to James McArthur for another run, but it was not nearly enough. McArthur pitched two innings in relief before Will Smith picked up his 10th save, working around a leadoff single.

Kansas City jumped out to a 5-1 lead after two innings, as Hunter Renfroe drove home a pair in the first with a single, and Nick Loftin muscled up for a two-run homerun as part of a three-run second inning, all coming against starter Cody Morris, who has been fairly effective in a swing role for the last-place Yankees.

Thursday night also marked the MLB debut for outfielder Tyler Gentry, who was re-called from Omaha to take the struggling Nelson Velazquez's place on the roster. Gentry's debut didn't really go the way he probably would have liked, going 0-for-4, including leaving four men in scoring position (five total) in his first two at-bats without even getting the ball out of the infield.

"I had a million things going through my mind up there," he said. "It should get better from here as the game keeps slowing down for me at this level. It really is a different level up here."

Tigers acquire IF Jon Berti from Yankees: Detroit, who leads the wildcard race at this current time, has made their first trade of the season in acquiring utility infielder Jon Berti and cash considerations from the struggling Yankees for minor league infielder Peyton Graham.

With Javier Baez dealing with a nagging ankle injury, and others such as Ryan Kreidler struggling with the bat at the major league level, Berti gives them some experience that can play just about any defensive position except for catcher.

Graham was a second-round pick of the Tigers out of the University of Oklahoma back in 2022, but has not lived up to that lofty draft slot in his brief pro career to date with a .712 career OPS in 599 minor league plate appearances, covering parts of rookie-level and Single-A ball.

                      TOP STORIES
Gentry re-called; makes MLB debut: I was about to pen a column later this week that called for the promotion of top outfield prospect Tyler Gentry to the Royals to figure out what they have with him before the trade deadline, but it appears that J.J. Picollo read my mind, as he re-called Gentry from Omaha prior to last night's game with the Yankees.

It was not a memorable debut, however, as he popped out with two men in scoring position in the first, and struck out with the bases loaded in the third, both times ending the inning. He was 0-for-4 for the day, but it was all smiles for him after the game.

"We won the game," he said. "Would I have liked a better day? Sure, but we're here to try and win games and make the postseason. There's lots of talented guys up here, some that I've played ball with since I was drafted. I feel good we're going to win most days out there with what's up here now."

To make room, Nelson Velazquez earned his second trip to Omaha despite hits in his last two games. Gentry was having a fine season in Omaha, hitting .298/.393/.487 in 280 plate appearances in Triple-A, although that only comes out to a 106 OPS+ at that level, which is a tad concerning.

However, an .860 OPS at any level is nothing to scoff at. Heck, if he could give the Royals even a .760 OPS, that's better than any current outfielder on the roster. Only Dairon Blanco's .745 comes close.

The good news is that this shouldn't preclude Picollo from further bolstering the roster (more on this later), although Gentry being in the majors likely takes him away as their top trade chip -- for now. If he produces, they'll want to keep him around, and they could add to the bullpen or yet another bat. If not, unless he just looks completely impotent at the plate, it shouldn't hurt his value enough to make teams stop considering him in potential deals.

As it currently stands, it's too much of a seller's market right now, as teams can't really get a gauge on what players will eventually become available. My personal favorite, Brandon Drury, is on an Angels team that is only a few games back of the Royals in the wildcard race, and shouldn't have any reason to sell at this point. The only players that make any sense from teams that are almost 100% selling at the deadline would be Seth Brown (Oakland), Lane Thomas (Washington), and -- possibly -- Andrew Vaughn (White Sox), although the latter would be an inter-divisional deal.

Royals will continue to look for upgrades: After acquiring right-hander Austin Adams earlier in the week to lengthen the bullpen and promoting the aforementioned Gentry to the big-league roster, GM J.J. Picollo was asked if they had any plans to continue to try and upgrade.

"We're exploring all avenues," he said, matter-of-factly in his weekly press conference. "I think the moves we've made so far, all three pitchers are on the active roster and being productive players. I think we still need a bat, preferably a right-handed one, but someone that can add a little bit of firepower as we need a bit more depth there. Tyler's earned his way up here through his play, and we're excited to see what he can do."

It came out in mid-May that the Royals had inquired about Luis Arraez before he was dealt from Miami to San Diego, and a recent report also suggested they had entered trade discussions for outfielder Austin Slater, who ended up getting traded from San Francisco to Toronto for minor league pitcher Connor Cooke.

They acquired Adams without digging into their top fifteen prospects, let alone top five, by dealing infielder Leonel Valera and pitcher Anthony Simonelli to Oakland. It was revealed a few days after the deal by the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser that the A's had pursued Valera, who was a minor league free agent this past offseason, but signed with the Royals instead.

"I think we're still in a good position to make additional moves down the line," Picollo went on to say. "We're fielding calls pretty much every day from interested teams regarding just about every prospect in our top group."

Only a solo homerun hit off the bat of MJ Melendez in the ninth inning prevented the Royals from being no-hit against Yoshinobu Yamamoto and the Los Angeles Dodgers, but the pitching staff couldn't do much of anything to prevent the Dodgers from piling up runs as the Royals were blown off the field to the tune of 12-1.

Yamamoto stayed in after the Melendez homerun and retired both Michael Massey and Hunter Renfroe on strikes, throwing a season-high 127 pitches, striking out eleven while walking five.

Brady Singer was tagged for eight earned runs, although five of them came in the second inning, and two others were let in by reliever Matt Sauer. Sauer allowed three earned in all in 1 1/3 innings.

James Outman got the scoring kicked off for L.A. with his 17th homerun of the season in the very first inning, with Mookie Betts hitting his 24th and 25th dingers of the year during the contest.

"Up and down the lineup, they just have some killers," said manager Matt Quatraro. "Forget about (Shohei) Ohtani, they have four or five other guys who would be the top hitter on most other teams, and they have a half-dozen."

Dairon Blanco's leadoff double in the top of the 10th proved to be the difference, along with an outstanding relief effort from Will Smith to even their series with the Dodgers by winning 7-6 in extras.

Smith went two innings, coming in for the ninth to preserve a 6-6 tie. He retired all six hitters he faced, including four strikeouts.

"I know Will's been beat up a bit lately by opposing teams and by you guys a bit," manager Matt Quatraro, referring to the local media. "But he was a huge catalyst for us winning this game. That's the most confident I've seen him in weeks."

With three hits, including his 15th homerun of the season, Salvador Perez led the charge offensively, falling just a triple short of the cycle. Maikel Garcia was 1-for-2, and also walked three times.

There was also a cool moment in the second inning when Tyler Gentry took the first pitch from James Paxton and parked it in the left field seats for his first career MLB hit and homerun, a two-run round-tripper.

"It's pretty neat that my first hit went over the fence," he said after the game. "I wish we would have won, but at least I'll have that memory."

Michael Wacha was smacked around a bit, allowing six earned runs in four innings. But that's when the bullpen took over, led by John Schreiber, who pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief. Josh Taylor and Chris Stratton followed with 2 1/3 scoreless frames combined of their own before Smith closed it out.

Still limited by a minor oblique strain, Edward Cabrera allowed three earned runs in 3 1/3 innings, but an outstanding relief effort kept the Royals in the game all the way through, only to see them drop a 4-2 decision to the Dodgers to cap off the three-game series on the West Coast.

Tyler Glasnow held the Royals scoreless through six innings before they finally broke through against the big right-hander with a two-run homerun from Hunter Renfroe, just his fifth homerun of the season, in the seventh inning. Glasnow finished the inning, but was removed after seven with a solid line -- seven innings, two earned runs, nine strikeouts.

"If there's anything that I know about Tyler, it's that he'll attack the zone with reckless abandon," said manager Matt Quatraro, who was on the coaching staff in Tampa for most of Glasnow's Tampa Bay career. "The thing is, his stuff is so good that he can challenge the other team's lineup without a ton of fear that opposing hitters will be able to square him up properly."

It wasn't a banner day for the offense, with Michael Massey's double the only other extra-base hit on the day for Kansas City. Nick Loftin was 2-for-4, while Freddy Fermin reached base in all three plate appearances.

One big positive was the performance of Kris Bubic, who worked 3 2/3 innings in relief of Cabrera. He allowed just three hits, one run, and struck out four without a walk. Some wondered whether his performance in Omaha was a harbinger of things to come, but he came out firing with all four pitches working well for him.

"Honestly, going to the minors was just about stretching out and not worrying about the results," he said after the game. "I didn't throw much besides my fastball and curve, with offspeed mixed in there maybe three, four times in a game."

Rangers acquire RHP's Weems, Finnegan from Washington: Several weeks after trading for southpaw Sean Newcomb from Oakland, the Rangers have further bolstered their bullpen by acquiring pitchers Kyle Finnegan and Jordan Weems, along with cash and a player to be named later from the Nationals for touted prospects Yosy Galan and Daniel Mateo.

Finnegan has been one of the better right-handed relievers in the National League in recent seasons, including twenty-eight saves last season for the Nationals. He's struggled in 2024 with a 7.24 ERA in 27 1/3 innings, but his FIP and SIERA are a much more palatable 4.57 and 2.76, respectively, suggesting that he's been a bit on the unlucky side.

Never a huge strikeout pitcher, Finnegan is a slightly-below average pitcher in that regard with a 25.8% punchout rate, but has dropped his walk rate to a remarkable 4.7%, which is a career-best, and is likely fueling his lower FIP/SIERA marks.

Weems has been back and forth between Triple-A and the majors; and was actually not on the 40-man roster at the time of the move. His numbers with the Nationals weren't great, but has posted generally solid numbers at the Triple-A level, with a career 4.37 ERA that's backed up by a 4.43 FIP and 3.36 SIERA in 125 innings. It's unclear at this point if he'll be added to the active roster, or simply be used as a depth piece.

Guardians' Gimenez re-injures groin; could miss remainder of season: Guardians infielder Andres Gimenez's return to Cleveland's lineup took a major hit as it was reported that he re-tore his groin and will need surgery to repair, per the Cleveland Plain-Dealer.

That means that top prospect Brayan Rocchio will continue to draw the starts at second base, and he's been very good with a slash of .317/.359/.450, which is an OPS+ of 128.

Quatraro to elevate Schreiber to the closer's role: In a bit of a surprise move, Royals skipper Matt Quatraro has decided to elevate John Schreiber to the ninth-inning role, as he announced in his opening remarks of his weekly press conference with the media over Zoom.

Schreiber, 30, has been one of the most dominant right-handed relievers in the league this season, producing numbers that are pretty much unrivaled amongst other peers at his position. In fact, his season to date is even better than any of Wade Davis' dominant seasons from 2014-16, as Schreiber hasn't had the command fits that occasionally plagued Davis.

However, he's never been a full-time closer in his career, having been mainly a guy that comes in to get right-handed bats out. He came into 2024 with just nine career saves, eight of them in 2022 with Boston.

"He's earned it," said Quatraro. "I know Will (Smith) has been the guy for most of the season, but it's getting to the point where we can't ignore what he's done. We've had talks with him over the past few weeks, and it's a role that I think he'll take to well, and he's excited for the opportunity."

Along with posting an insane 39% strikeout rate (second only to new teammate Austin Adams in the AL), he's getting groundball outs at a 56% clip, and is holding opposing hitters to a paltry .409 OPS.

Known as a righty specialist, lefties are hitting an even worse .352 OPS against him. Just three of the dozen hits off him have gone for extra bases, two homeruns and a double, and of those, they account for three of just the four barrels against him in 2024.

Gentry optioned back to Omaha; Waters re-called: It was a short, but largely unmemorable stay for top prospect Tyler Gentry in the majors, as he was optioned back to Omaha today for Drew Waters, who has been in Omaha since the 29th of May, hitting .265 in that stretch.

Gentry hit his first MLB homerun against James Paxton and the Dodgers on Saturday, but was 0-for-9 in his other at-bats, with no walks and three strikeouts.

"This allows us to balance the outfield bats a bit more on the major league roster," said manager Matt Quatraro in the weekly press conference. "We think Drew's defensive flexibility and additional lefty bat are a better fit at this time. Tyler is also likely going to get more at-bats in Omaha to continue working on some things."

Kansas City enters a critical time of the season, just four games over .500 and a game out of the last wildcard spot as June winds down. They have three at Oakland beginning tomorrow before going to Arlington to take on the defending champion Rangers, a team that holds a four-game lead over the Astros for first place in the AL West.

In seven innings of work, Cole Ragans' only hit allowed was a fourth-inning solo homerun to Esteury Ruiz to tie the game at one run each. He struck out seven with just a couple of walks, but his offense let him down as they couldn't scratch across any other runs in a 2-1 loss to the Oakland A's to open a three-game set on the West Coast.

Oakland scored in the eighth on an error by Hunter Renfroe, who misplayed a hard-hit single to right that allowed Stephen Piscotty to score from second base. The ball ricocheted off the heel of his glove towards the foul line; and Piscotty, who was slowing up into third, took off on the cue of his third-base coach and beat the Renfroe throw to the plate to score the run.

"Just an unfortunate turn of events," said manager Matt Quatraro. "That's a play that Hunter makes 99 out of a 100 times. Just the one time it didn't happen, pretty much directly changed the outcome of the game potentially."

Freddy Fermin's sac fly in the second inning was the only run that Kansas City could muster, and Fermin also had one of the Royals' five hits.

After a poor start through the first couple of months and change, outfielder Hunter Renfroe is in the midst of his best stretch of baseball this season, as he's hitting at a .902 OPS clip in the month of June. He was 2-for-3 with a walk, double, homerun, and four RBI to help the Royals even their series with Oakland at the Coliseum by a 10-7 score.

Renfroe's performance atoned for his critical fielding error in Tuesday night's game that almost assuredly was the play that handed the Royals a loss over a victory.

Matt Sauer picked up his first career MLB victory, but in two innings, allowed three hits and walks each with a pair of strikeouts. He was also tagged for two earned runs on a single by Nick Allen with two outs in the seventh. He's allowed eight earned runs in his last five outings, covering just 6 2/3 innings of work.

Facing his former team for the first time, Austin Adams struck out three in 1 1/3 innings, retiring all four hitters he faced. John Schreiber picked up his first save as a Royal, working around a two-out walk with a pair of strikeouts.

With just one hit and one walk allowed, Brady Singer completely stifled the Oakland offense in a 5-0 victory over the A's for his first career shutout. He struck out seven while facing just two hitters over the minimum to pick up his third victory of the season.

The view from the other dugout seemed to say it all, as an incredulous Mark Kotsay remarked on Singer's performance.

"He just worked us over," Kotsay lamented. "He probably didn't even need to shower after the game as I'm not sure he worked up a sweat."

Kansas City received all of their offense in one inning, with the Royals putting up a five-spot in the sixth inning, capped off by a Drew Waters grand slam, his first career MLB slam and first homerun of the season.

One lucky Royals fan also came away $25,000 richer, as the team has a promotional giveaway if a Royals player hits a grand slam in the sixth inning of any given contest.

Waters, who tripled in the first game of the series, was 2-for-4 with four RBI in all. Michael Massey singled home Bobby Witt Jr., who also had two hits and two steals, for the first run in the sixth.

Max Scherzer to make season debut tonight: The much-anticipated debut of Max Scherzer with the Rangers will come to pass tonight, as he'll square off against Michael Wacha and the Royals as the two teams begin a three-game series in Arlington.

Beset by back and hand issues since December, Scherzer finally took to the mound in May to make four rehab appearances (all starts), tossing nineteen innings with fourteen strikeouts to just five walks. His first appearance was with Double-A Round Rock before being promoted to Frisco for the final three starts.

Texas is also anticipating welcoming back Jacob deGrom in the coming weeks, as he's expected to come off the 60-day injured list and begin a rehab assignment later this week. Rookie outfielder Wyatt Langford (back) and Corey Seager (back) are also slated to return to action soon, per manager Bruce Bochy.

"We're getting healthy at a good time," he said. "Our schedule isn't going to do us any favors until the All-Star Break, so we'll need all the reinforcements we can get."

Nationals' fire sale continues; Robles acquired by Cleveland: Cleveland added to their outfield depth by sending minor league outfielder Pres Cavenaugh to Washington for veteran center fielder Victor Robles.

With Myles Straw and Oscar Mercado struggling and Estevan Florial on the injured list, the Guardians are in need of outfield help; and with few sellers available, they made the move to get Robles, who is still just twenty-seven and is a free agent after this season.

Cleveland has been very active in the trade market early on, acquiring the aforementioned Mercado back on May 20th, and just a few weeks after that traded for reliever Gio Gallegos from the Cardinals on the 6th of this month.

Washington may not be done selling by a long shot, either -- they have been reported to be shopping pitcher Patrick Corbin as well as outfielders Joey Gallo, Joey Meneses, and Eddie Rosario. Of the three outfielders, only Meneses has more than one year of control.

Reds to shelve Hunter Greene for remainder of season: The Reds could now be in the market for a starting pitcher as their top starter, Hunter Greene, will miss the remainder of the season after elbow surgery.

He left in the first inning of their 6-1 loss to Pittsburgh back on Monday, and after several MRI's, had surgery yesterday to correct a torn UCL and was placed on the 60-day injured list. It was not Tommy John surgery, but still invasive enough to have to shut him down at least through the rest of 2024 and perhaps a portion of 2025.
